A woman called me and wanted some information about the books. That’s the way it usually starts. We scheduled a time for an extended call and the appointment was kept.

Quite often when SDAs call like this, there is an air of arrogance about them, betimes more or less subtle. Such was the case with this caller. She wanted to know the truth about my “claims” as to there being evil changes in the books.

My position is to be servant to the inquiring mind. None of the positions I take are founded on my own ideas, but all are founded on readily available, physical evidence.

At some point, deep into our meeting, I asked her to please take her Desire of Ages, and turn to page 568. Come up two paragraphs, from the bottom of the page, and start reading right there. When she reached the end of the first, of the two, paragraphs, I asked her to stop and back up two sentences, and re-read those two sentences, which she did. Then I asked her to please back up and read that last sentence again.

Now, with greater concentration she read. My hearing is not what it used to be, but the gasp of shocking disbelief was audible, the stunning, stinging reality of a realized deception was palatable.

You can read the same sentence. Count up, from the bottom of the page, ten lines, and start reading that sentence. That is the lie. It is in print. It is in black and white. There are far too many copies out there to have a recall. So something must be conjured up to defend it. But it is not defensible.

This reminds me of one of the attacks made against Verne Bates, by Vance Ferrell. In his paper, “The Teachings of Verne Bates,” Vance goes too far, over stepping the bounds of common sense, as he attempts to defend. Of course, many understand that common sense is not so common. Too often in our zeal we overlook the things we are doing.

Here in Vance’s own words, we quote, “The context is speaking about Christ’s great love and care for His erring children. Ellen is so filled with feeling that she waxes eloquent with powerful symbolic language to illustrate her meaning.” And he goes on to quote part of the sentence.

Now here is an interesting thing. Vance would have us believe that God’s prophet is so wrapped up in God’s glory, that it is ok to tell a lie!?!

No!, my friends. A lie told is the footprint of the father of lies, Satan.

Vance has stepped right into the pages of the Supplement to the Christian Experience and Views.

I was shown like this. The truth once got out now, will stand; for it is the truth for the last days, and it will live, and less need to be said upon the truth after it is out. Numberless words need not be put upon paper to justify what speaks for itself, and shines in its clearness. But it is not so with error. It is so winding and twisting that it needs a multitude of words to explain it in its crooked form. But truth is straight, plain, clear, and stands out boldly in its own defense. The cause of truth should not be hindered in its onward progress for want of means. p. 14, Para. 2, [SUPCEV].

Very many are going to lose Heaven, come up in the third resurrection, finding out too late, that their loyalty to the GCSDA church was misplaced; for in so doing, they made of the church, an idol; something to come before Christ; the exact same mistake the Jews made with the temple.

Costly mistake indeed! It blinds the eye to the truth, which is right in their face. Just like the woman reading through the Desire of Ages, missed!, was blinded to!, the lie, staring her right in the eye. She could not see it.

Like all the rest of Laodicea, professing to be rich in spiritual discernment, Satan laughs at their blinding pride, as he leads them down the path to perdition.

There are two passages ALL MUST KEEP IN MIND!

The insinuations of Satan took effect until they [the angels in Heaven] really believed that the Father and the Son were their enemies, and Satan, the benefactor. Satan has the same power and the same control over minds now, only increased by exercise and experience a hundred-fold. Men and women are today deceived, blinded by his insinuations and devices, and know it not. They are, in giving place to doubts and unbelief in regard to the work of God, and cherishing feelings of distrust and cruel jealousies, preparing themselves for complete deception. They rise up with bitter feelings against the ones who have dared to speak of their errors and reprove their sins. p. 103, Para. 1, [23OT].

As we near the close of time, the human mind is more readily affected by Satan’s devices. R&H, February 18, 1862

Without a humble acceptance of our true condition before God, we are lost. I do hope that you will see the reality of the reward of eternal life, and the sure punishment of sin, before eternal death.

Go and read again the letter to the Laodiceans. Know that none of us are rich in spiritual discernment. None. Nay, but we are poor, in spiritual discernment, blinded to spiritual realities, our shameful sins bare, for all the universe to see, naked.

Turn to God with your whole heart. Time is short.

God Bless your study of the truth
