The 1849 Broadside is an important document. It is my guess, at this point, that Joseph Bates published this one also. We know he published the 1847 Broadside. You should have a copy of the 1849 Broadside saved and/or printed out so you can study it.
There are several points contained in this Broadside that are not found elsewhere. We will be taking a look at those here today, through this comparison. In doing the comparison of the three Broadsides and other papers with the 1851 Christian Experience and Views, there are certain changes that were made in the text, that beg a question, “Why?”
I fully believe that James White was faithful all his life and will be one of the 144,000. I would suggest that you take a look at this page on the net and try to get your mind around the tremendous amount of work it then took, to produce a page of text — ready to be used. Each and every letter, had to be picked out of a try and placed in position, and then justified, and then shimmed, and then clamped, and then proofed, all before it could be used. Hours and hours of work went into the process of producing one (1) page, just one.
I believe at this point, that H. S. Gurney was helping James produce the copy. I could be wrong about this. In my opinion, his re-production of, and changes to, The DayStar visions, proves that he was willing to make changes as he saw fit. Irregardless, someone did the same, and is responsible for the same, to the 1849 Broadside, when it was re-produced in the 1851 CEV.
NOTE THIS: Update – I just went out and checked the DayStar comparison, and … there it was! It looks like the same mind at work, the same subject matter is deleted about the sealing. I see this as pointing to Gurney. Check it out.
We’ll look at those points now.
1.) This occurs in the third paragraph of the Broadside. It is the material deleted from being republished, and is only later to be found in 1 Selected Messages, p.40. Also there, is given a title to the paper I had not seen before. It is, To Those Who Are Receiving the Seal of the Living God.
This portion contains valuable information. I am re-stating the points.
A.) Disregarding the visions is the same as not holding Present Truth.
B.) Striking against the visions is actually striking against the Holy Ghost.
C.) The Testimonies are, in fact, the words of God.
D.) The Testimonies are, in fact, the teachings of God.
E.) The time of trouble here referred to, is after the close of probation.
2.) About the end of this third paragraph is the change in the text which depicts the four angel’s loosening their grip on the four winds of human strife. I consider this to be trash. I could be wrong here. This idea is expounded upon in the counterfeit, as if, the angel’s can hardly hold these winds. I’ll tell you what, when God tells an angel to go and do something, it gets done! because the angel has the power of God with him!
Anyway, I consider this questionable.
3.) In paragraph 9 of the Broadside God gives us warning about preparing for the time of trouble. We are not to do it. We are to be preparing for going home to Heaven. There are three points here.
A.) We are not to prepare for the time of trouble.
B.) We are to be selling off our houses and lands and making a covenant with God by sacrifice. When I see words deleted, as in this case, for the sake of grammar?, I do not know, it pains me. Repetition equals emphasis. I prefer the bad grammar over the changes.
C.) The idea of God sending ravens with food or raining manna for the saints during the time of trouble is not found any other place. I think it was added here by whoever did the editing. The only real parallel is Elijah, a representative of the 144,000, was fed by ravens. But that fact does not make it a part of the original vision. I believe God does not need either. He can make the stones into bread.
4.) Paragraph 11, has a most important complete sentence that was deleted. Here it is. “This seal is the Sabbath.” Why was this deleted? It would seem, because the one doing the editing did not agree with it. I do not know. We may never know. But just like uncovering the modern day false flag events of Waco and 9/11, you want to analyze the first reports, and here we want to analyze the first printings to get to the truth.
Counterfeits always come after the truth is out. That is the very nature of counterfeits, to try and pass off as the real. Here is some counterfeit on this very point.
(Ephesians 1:13; 4:30). A Mark Which Angels Read.–[Ephesians 1:13 quoted.] What is the seal of the living God, which is placed in the foreheads of His people? It is a mark which angels, but not human eyes, can read; for the destroying angel must see this mark of redemption (Letter 126, 1898). {4BC 1161.4}
The angel with the writer’s ink horn is to place a mark upon the foreheads of all who are separated from sin and sinners, and the destroying angel follows this angel (Letter 12, 1886). {4BC 1161.5}
This is just trash. Ezekiel tells us that those who have charge over the city are men, not angels. It further claims that there is one destroying angel, Ezekiel lists off six men with the destroying weapons.
(Revelation 7:2.) Seal Is a Settling Into Truth.–Just as soon as the people of God are sealed in their foreheads–it is not any seal or mark that can be seen, but a settling into the truth, both intellectually and spiritually, so they cannot be moved–just as soon as God’s people are sealed and prepared for the shaking, it will come. Indeed, it has begun already; the judgments of God are now upon the land, to give us warning, that we may know what is coming (MS 173, 1902). {4BC 1161.6}
Two points here: first, the seal is not a settling into the truth, it is the Sabbath message. Second, the shaking already started in 1850, God told us so on January 26 of that year. Then they turn and say it has begun! God does not speak with forked tongue. Plus, judgements are not the shaking.
And another………….
When Perfection of Character Is Reached.–Are we striving with all our God-given powers to reach the measure of the stature of men and women in Christ? Are we seeking for His fullness, ever reaching higher and higher, trying to attain to the perfection of His character? When God’s servants reach this point, they will be sealed in their foreheads. The recording angel will declare, “It is done.” They will be complete in Him whose they are by creation and by redemption.– Manuscript 148, 1899. {3SM 427.2}
This is another lie. The recording angel does not use these words. See page 197 of the 1858 Great Controversy and Ezekiel 9:11. Only Christ says these words.
5.) Lastly, the last paragraph. This passage has never been republished in any document I can find. Great admonition from God. We should be gathering up light, not throwing it out.
God Bless your study
