Category: Saving Others God’s Way

Sabbath October 5, 2013

It is a fearful deception to think that somehow, someway, because there are now and have been past, so many good Seventh-Day Adventists throughout the known world, there must be more than 144,000, of those exposed to this faith, who will be saved.

Currently, there are over 17 million SDAs in the world. If they were all truly converted the great controversy would have been over with long ago. Numbers will not do it. What the numbers really show is how this message has been dumbed down, changed, from what God gave to the world, to what unconverted man thinks it should be. Not counting Catholic influence.

Many claim that there are Jesuits in the church. That may be. The real point is that the members have not embraced the very thing that would keep sin and sinners out of the church— the living testimony, the voice of reproof and rebuke, the pointed testimony, it goes by a few names.

Everybody wants to look good, smell good, feel good, and have their feelings of importance stroked. This is not God’s appointed way. Here is his appointed way.

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: Revelation 3:19

I like the way Dale Carnegie states it in his famous book, How to Win Friends and Influence People. “There is only one way under high Heaven to get anybody to anything. Did you ever stop and think of that? Yes, just one way. And that is by making the other person want to do it. Remember, there is no other way.”

He goes on to quote William James, “‘The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” He didn’t speak, mind you, of the ‘wish’ or the ‘desire’ or the ‘longing’ to be appreciated. He said the ‘craving’ to be appreciated.” Dale then goes on to educate people in the arts of the ways of the world. But these are not God’s ways.

It is because the church has adopted the ways of the world that it has so many members. It is stroking this “craving” to be appreciated, using social proof, “Well, there are so many, it must be right, if I am a part of it I can be right too.” Best you take a good hard look at the past. Only eight got in the ark, only one Abraham was chosen, only one Elijah stood against apostasy, only three were thrown in the fiery furnace, only, only, only! “And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of” them all! Only a few.

Time to review some evidence.

They [the Advent people] fell all the way along the path one after another, until we heard the voice of God like many waters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming. The Day-Star.

And now the second voice of evidence.

But there was one clear place of settled glory, from whence came the voice of God, like many waters, which shook the heavens and the earth. There was a mighty earthquake. The graves were shaken open, and those who had died in faith under the third angel’s message, keeping the Sabbath, came forth from their dusty beds, glorified, to hear the covenant of peace that God was to make with those who had kept his law. And as God spake the day and hour of Jesus’ coming, and delivered the everlasting covenant to his people,…. 1858 Great Controversy, p. 205.

From these two pieces of evidence all should be able to see that “the voice of God like many waters” calls from the grave a certain very well defined and explicitly stated group of people, for the explicit purpose of giving them “the day and hour of Jesus coming.” Then we go back to The Day-Star for a final piece of evidence.

The living saints, 144,000 in number, know and understand the voice….

Notice, that it is only after that resurrection by the voice of the Father that the saints are called “the living saints.” Of course they are living! they just got resurrected! Some of them, we know not how many, have physically gone through the time of trouble such as never was, the time of Jacob’s trouble.

We are rapidly closing in on the 169th anniversary of October 22, 1844 and because so few are walking in the light of the Midnight Cry, they reason within themselves, “There must be more than 144,000, there must be… it must be a figurative number, yes, that’s it! Those words must mean a figurative number!” And so the first lie of Satan spreads like wildfire! “Ye shall not surely die!” And this, in the face of very explicit words.

All this means that the 144,000 count started with the Sabbath message, which started with the third angel’s message, which started October 23, 1844 with the vision God gave to Hiram Edson, which proved that Christ, our high priest, went into the Most Holy place and the great antitypical Day of Atonement began. When that count is done, when the last saint is numbered and sealed, here is what happens next.

I saw angels hurrying to and fro in heaven. An angel returned from the earth with a writer’s inkhorn by his side, and reported to Jesus that his work was done, that the saints were numbered and sealed. THEN I saw Jesus, who had been ministering before the ark containing the ten commandments, throw down the censer. He raised his hands upward, and with a loud voice said, It is done. And all the angelic host laid off their crowns as Jesus made the solemn declaration, He that is unjust, let him be unjust still; and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still; and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still; and he that is holy, let him be holy still. p. 197, Para. 2, [1SG ].

There is only one numbered group of saints. The number is very explicit, “144,000 in number.” It’s taken, to date, 169 years so far, and the count is not over. This means that even fewer than 144,000 of those who have been exposed to the truth before today will be saved. All are responsible for the light they had access to. Many, many will die. You have the opportunity to become immortal. God so loved you that he gave his only Son, to die, to pay the price so that you could live, but it can only be in God’s appointed way.

These Bible words make a nice lesson. Watch the parallel phrases and words, then the definitions.

To know wisdom and instruction;
To perceive the words of understanding;

To know is to perceive. Wisdom and instruction are words of understanding.

To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
To give subtilty to the simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion.

To receive instruction is giving subtilty and knowledge and discretion.

A wise man will hear,
and will increase learning; and

Hearing is to increase learning and attaining.

A man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

A wise man is a man of understanding and understanding is wise counsels.

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation;
the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. Proverbs 1:2-6

A proverb is the words of the wise and the interpretation is a dark saying.

There is no true wisdom apart from God and all wisdom is in fact Christ, the Word, in you, the hope of glory; the same Word was in the beginning, “and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:1-5

So God sent John the Baptist before Jesus Christ to prepare the way; “John was a representative of the people of God in the last days, to whom God has committed important and solemn truths,” Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2, page 44. Of him Christ said, he was God’s word teaching God’s word, John 5:35.

This means… that if you accept this method of hearing and increasing your learning, you will come to know wisdom, instruction and perceive words of understanding, you will receive instruction from God, gain subtilty, knowledge, discretion, the understanding of proverbs, parables, the words of the wise men of God and their dark sayings and be obedient to this instruction.

You will become a part of that group of the people of God in the last days of whom John the Baptist was a representative. Think very carefully of how John lived… and died.

The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

Why did he have to say that the words are spirit? How can the words be the Holy Spirit?

but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. Hebrews 4:2

Here is a part of God’s filtering process. Many people hear the words of God preached, but if the hearing is not mixed with faith then, for them, God’s words have no effect. They are not transformed. They do not get the spirit, they do not get the life. Which brings us to this example.

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 1 Corinthians 2:1-8

Here is a group of people, the Jewish leadership, that heard the words of spirit and life from the very lips of Jesus the messiah himself, yet, because they had no faith those words could not profit them! So they crucified the very messiah they were looking for.

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

Apparently there is a way that we are made, created by God, wherein God knows that this one or that one has a mind to follow Christ all the way in faith, therefore God gives them faith in the hearing of his words. For the rest, the words of God the wisdom of God is spoken in a mystery to them, even the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the world unto our glory, but to them it is foolishness and they turn from it back to the wisdom of man, as a pig to the slop.

This is perhaps easiest to spot in those who do not stay after the meeting to get in on the mystery. Mark 4 tells of such, for Christ told the parable of the sower and then everybody went home… except a few, they stayed to talk with Christ. He told them that because they had asked, they would get… the mystery of the kingdom of God.

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:13

One of the ways the Holy Ghost teaches is by comparing God’s words with God’s words. After all, his words are spirit—ual, aren’t they? Yes they are. And they are life.

Holding forth the word of life; Philippians 2:16

Paul knew. In fact, this is how we are born again, if we have faith in the word.

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 1 Peter 1:23

Not in the wisdom of man, which this world has, but in God’s wisdom. 1 Corinthians 1:17 – 3:3.

But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. 1 Peter 1:25

Sabbath August 17, 2013

Continuing our reading from James’s book, Life Incidents.

1. The three messages constitute a solemn warning to the world to prepare for the coming of Christ. The closing division of this great warning is a test to the world and ripens the harvest of the earth. Those who receive the warning and prepare for the coming of the Lord, are ripened by it for immortality. Those who reject it, are ripened for the day of slaughter. p. 339, Para. 1, [LIFE].

2. The warning given by Noah, the manner his message was treated, and the wrath of God in a flood of water, illustrate the closing events of the present state of things. “As the days of Noah were, so also shall the coming of the Son of man be.” God did not call this preacher of righteousness to warn the next to the last generation before the flood, but the very last. The very generation which drank the waters of the flood, saw Noah build the ark, and heard his warning voice. How absurd the supposition that Noah built the ark, and gave his warning message in the time of next to the last generation, so that those who heard his message and saw his work, passed into the grave, and the ark went to decay, and their children came upon the stage of action to witness unwarned the terrors of the flood. p. 339, Para. 2, [LIFE].

3. The last great warning was to be given to the last generation of men. They very ones who hear it, receive it, obey it, and are waiting for the Lord, will exclaim, as the Son of man shall return with his angels down the blazing vault of heaven, “Lo! this is our God, we have waited for him, and he will save us.” And the very men who reject the warning, and justly merit the wrath of God, will also witness the second advent in flaming fire with terror and anguish. This warning is not given to next to the last generation, but to the very last. Then, as certain as the great warning, illustrated by the three messages of Rev. xiv, had been, and is being given in our day, just so certain the generation that has heard the warning will witness the day of wrath, and the revelation of the Son of God from Heaven. One of two things is certain; either Seventh-day Adventists are wrong in the application of the messages, or Christ is very soon coming. If they are correct in their application of the great warning, then the very men who hear it will witness its terrible realities. p. 339, Para. 3, [LIFE].

“Verily I say unto you,” says Christ, “this generation shall not pass away, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matt. xxiv, 34, 35. We do not believe that the word generation marks any definite number of years. The Lord designed to teach that the people who should live at the time of the fulfillment of the last sign mentioned (falling stars of 1833,) and should hear the proclamation of the coming of Christ, based partly upon the fulfilled signs, should witness the scenes connected with his coming. God has raised up men to give the solemn warning to the world at the right time. The signs were fulfilled at the right time to give force to the warning. And the very generation of men that live after the three great signs are fulfilled, and who hear and reject the warning message, will drink the unmingled cup of the wrath of God. And those of this very generation who receive the message, suffer disappointment and endure the trials of the waiting position, will witness the coming of Christ, and exclaim, “Lo! this is our God, we have waited for him.” p. 340, Para. 1, [LIFE].

Dear reader, if watchful and faithful to duty, we shall very soon enter the harbor of eternal rest. Keep a good look-out. Oh, be not deceived, and overcome by the world, the flesh, and the Devil. True faith forbids your looking into the future, and laying plans for the benefit of the next generation. It shuts you up to the present. But it is to be feared that those who are employing their physical and mental forces to accumulate wealth for their children, while they are neglecting their duty to the cause of present truth, and do not give themselves and families time to seek and serve God, are making a terrible mistake. They not only fail to help the cause, and fail to walk with God, and fail to exert the best influence in their own families, but their influence in professing so solemn and definite a position as that the present is the period for the third and last solemn warning, while in works they deny their faith, is decidedly against the cause. p. 340, Para. 2, [LIFE].

The world exhibits madness in grasping for wealth. A spirit of insanity has taken hold of men upon the subject of worldly gain; and many who profess present truth are more or less imbued with it. With those who do not fear God and keep his commandments, and are not looking for the soon coming of his Son, this is what might be expected. But with Seventh-day Adventists there is no excuse. With them it is insanity and madness. Why should they accumulate wealth for their children? Should the Lord remain away a hundred years, wealth handed down to them would be their almost certain ruin. Look to the history of truly good and great men. Have they sprung up amid wealth? Or have they come from families trained in the school of poverty and want? Read the histories of the early lives of martin Luther and Abraham Lincoln. Both were poor boys. But they soon became great men, by facing want, grappling with poverty, and overcoming those obstacles ever lying in the path of want. Such a struggle in early life gave them experience, and was the safeguard of their purity. While the names of these good men are embalmed in the memory and affection of the people, those of hundreds, who received riches from their parents, have rotted, because money was in the way of their doing what they should have done, and being what they might have been. setting aside the coming of the Lord, there is no more certain ruin to the children than for them to look to, and lean upon, their parents wealth. p. 341, Para. 1, [LIFE].

But what can be said of the influence of those brethren who profess to believe that the last great warning to the world is being given, yet devote their entire energies to accumulating wealth for their children? What can be the influence upon their children? Is it not to lead them to love this world? to put off the coming of the Lord? to neglect the necessary preparation? Are they not taking a course directly to shut them out of the kingdom of Heaven? And is there any hope of the salvation of either parents or children while pursuing such an inconsistent course? Without the faith of the soon coming of the Lord, they are pursuing a course to secure their ruin. With this faith, while pursuing a course to deny it in work, they are making that ruin certain. p. 342, Para. 1, [LIFE].

The short period of probation remaining should be improved in laying up treasure in Heaven, and seeking that preparation necessary to its enjoyment in the next life. Parents, I entreat of you, live out the precious Advent faith before your children. Lead them to Jesus, and teach them by your faith and works to secure a preparation for his coming. Let your influence in favor of truth and holiness extend to all around, that it may be said to you, “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. p. 342, Para. 2, [LIFE].

This material gave me a much needed better handle on the subject. Clearly God has called us to a unique position. Holding that position is not easy, but it is God ordained as the very best thing for us in this patient, waiting, watching time.

The multi-generational patient, waiting, watching time is a severe trial for some. As I have watched people getting closer and closer to the grave, it’s as if they are striving to find the one doctrine that proves they will not die. My own father did such. I remember his thoughts about the wheat being harvested while it was standing, not fallen down, thus a person is not dead.

James White avows his conviction that he would be of that group that would watch Christ come in the clouds because he had seen the falling of the stars in 1833. He was correct that he would be a part of that group and that he would watch Christ come in the clouds of angels; he just did not know at that time that he would be called from the grave by the voice of the Father, and he would watch as Christ came in the clouds, and he would be a part of the 144,000.

Can Christ come this year? The correct answer is yes! We are going to look at some comments by James to get a better handle on this matter. We will be using some excerpts from Life Incidents.

Seventh-day Adventists have nothing to boast of. God has often reproved and chastised us for unfaithfulness. And when we have returned to him, and humbly and faithfully battle for the truth, amid reproaches and persecutions, he has greatly blessed us. Nothing is so much to be dreaded as that calm which is the result of tempering unpopular, testing truth to the ears of the people so as not to offend. Rather let the reproach come, and the storm rage, if it be the result of speaking the truth of God in love. p. 336, Para. 1, [LIFE].

As a people we have had our difficulties to surmount, our trials to bear, and our victories to gain. We are gathered from Methodists, Regular Baptists, Freewill Baptists, Seventh-day Baptists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Worldlings, and Infidels. We are composed of native Americans, English, Welsh, Scotch, Irish, French, Germans, Norwegians, Danes, Swedes, Poles, and others. To bring together a body composed of such material, affected more or less by the religious sentiments and forms of the several denominations, with all their national peculiarities, has called for much patient, and persevering toil. And it is by the grace of God that we are what we are. And let his name be praised that in our darkest hours, when we have humbled ourselves, he has ever come to our aid. p. 336, Para. 2, [LIFE].

From their past brief history Seventh-day Adventists may learn much as to their present work and future prospects. When in humility they have borne a decided testimony in the fear of God, their labors have been signally blessed. When they have been willing to bear the cross of present truth, and sacrifice time, convenience and means to advance the work, they have shared the approving smiles of Heaven. They have seen that nothing can keep the body in a healthy condition but the plain and pointed testimony. This will do the work of purification, either by purging their sins, or separating from them the unconsecrated and rebellious. Let the result be what it may, such testimony must be borne, or this people will fall as others have fallen. And terrible would be their fall, after having so clear light, and having had committed to them so sacred a trust as the last message of mercy to sinners. p. 336, Para. 3, [LIFE].

From the past we may also learn what to expect in the future, in the line of persecution. Satan has been angry because this people have been seeking for the “old paths,” that they might walk therein. He has been especially disturbed as they have plead for the restoration of the Sabbath, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. If the people be taught that God is testing them upon the Sabbath, and that they should listen to the testimony of Jesus, in the spirit of prophecy, which reproves their sins, and calls on them to consecrate themselves and what they possess to the Lord, we may depend upon it, the ire of the dragon will be stirred. This we have witnessed and suffered in proportion to our faithfulness in the work. When we have borne a pointed testimony, we have been the especial objects of the wrath of the dragon; but with it have also shared largely the blessing of God. When we have been unfaithful, the dragon has been comparatively quiet, but we have suffered leanness of soul. And thus we may expect it will be for time to come. p. 337, Para. 1, [LIFE].

The position of suspense is not the most happy one. Those who wait for the return of the Lord in uncertainty as to the definite period of his second advent, are in danger of becoming restless. Hence the application of certain texts to this time, and to the people who are waiting for their Lord. “Ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” Heb. x, 36. “Be ye also patient, stablish your hearts; for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.” James v, 8. “Here is the patience of the saints, here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Rev. xiv, 12. p. 337, Para. 2, [LIFE].

In such a position, how natural the often-repeated inquiry, “How long before the Lord will come?” But no definite answer can be given to this inquiry. And it is best that this question cannot be definitely answered. Definite time has answered the purpose of God. It brought the Advent people to the waiting time, requiring great patience. Throughout this entire period of the patience of the saints, the only safe position is to keep the coming of Christ ever before us, and to regulate all our acts in full view of the terrible realities of the Judgment. To put off the coming of the Lord, and view that event in the distance, and enter into the spirit of the world, would be dangerous in the extreme. It is true that there are prophecies to be fulfilled, just prior to the coming of the Lord; but their fulfillment is of such a nature that it can be realized in a short time. Unbelief may suggest that as the time has continued longer than the waiting ones expected, it may still continue many years. But saving faith takes the safe position, and views the event at the door. This fact should ever be borne in mind, that while we have no means of showing that the Lord will come at an immediate definite point, no one can prove that he may not very soon come. And while it cannot be proved that the Lord will not very soon come, I call attention to the following facts which show that the second advent cannot be a distant event. p. 338, Para. 1, [LIFE].

As further proof of yesterday’s posted position, we present this unpublished manuscript, and as such it is not yet authenticated. A couple of lines were published, see the reference, but not the rest. Interestingly, I had a copy of this manuscript from another source, but I have no idea how they got it. It must have been released to some specific purpose and was leaked to others. I am not knowing.

This was talked about the other day on this post which details how the White Estate lied about a line missing from the text, which was not missing. What this document does do is state explicitly that we are in the investigative judgment. You decide.

Manuscript 1, 1857.
Written in June, somewhere in Vermont. This manuscript is titled, “ Lack o f Appreciatio n o f t he M inistry” , Portions of this manuscript appear in Last Day Events, pp. 234-235.

I was shown some things concerning the preaching brethren. I saw their energies and strength were exhausted in laboring for a church that does not generally appreciate their labors. I saw that it would be better for the church to be thrown upon their own effort for a time. I saw they must be laborers. I saw that the principal part of Bro. Hutchins’ and Bro. Sperry’s labor has been to keep the church together. They have taken the burden of the church upon themselves, to dig around it, labor and labor for them until the church would, after the brethren had gotten a little victory, enjoy it, but make scarcely any effort for it themselves, in a few weeks are sleepy and need the same effort made for them again. They tire and exhaust the strength of the worn-out servants of God. Again the servants of God plow through and get a little victory,  to be lost as easily as before. But when, with their own faith and wrestling with God, they obtain the victory, then it is lasting. They know then how much it costs, and they will preserve their consecration. I saw that so much of the efforts of these brethren should not be spent upon a world-loving and sleepy church. I saw that those who have not yet embraced the truth are anxious to hear, and these brethren should go where, at the present time, they can accomplish the most good with their feeble strength.

The church must arise. They do not half heed the message to the Laodicean church. There are those in the church who love this world better than they love Jesus. They love their treasures here better than they love heaven or eternal life, and with their earthly treasure they will perish. The True Witness now speaks to a lukewarm church. Be zealous and repent; but they scarcely hear or heed the message. A few are afflicting their souls. A few are heeding the counsel of the True Witness. Unless the church speedily arouses they will go into darkness, be ensnared and overcome by the enemy.

I saw we are in the investigative judgment. Soon judgment will be pronounced on our works and our actions which are passing in review before God. A solemn, awful period! Who realize this great work? I saw that those who do not now appreciate, study, and dearly prize the Word of God, spoken by His servants, will have cause to mourn bitterly hereafter.

I saw that the Lord in judgment will, at the close of time, walk through the earth; the fearful plagues will begin to fall. Then those who have despised God’s Word, those who have lightly esteemed it, shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the Lord and shall not find it. A famine is in the land for hearing the Word. The ministers of God will have done their last work, offered their last prayers, shed their last bitter tear for a rebellious church and an ungodly people. Their last solemn warning has been given.

O then how quickly would houses and lands, dollars that have been miserly hoarded and cherished and tightly grasped, be given for some consolation by those who have professed the truth and have not lived it out, for the way of salvation to be explained or to hear a hopeful word, or a prayer, or an exhortation from their ministers. But no, they must hunger and thirst on in vain; their thirst will never be quenched, no consolation can they get; their cases are decided and eternally fixed. It is a fearful, awful time. There can much be done now to bring in those jewels who are hid beneath the rubbish, who will highly prize the truth as it falls from the lips of God’s servants.

I was shown that many of the church have at this time of peril more care for their farm and their cattle than they have for the servants of God, or the truth which they preach; their labors are so common among them that the laborers are not considered worthy of their hire. His strength must be exhausted, his life embittered by scarcely a well day, must spend and be spent, and yet the church asleep as to these things.

But I saw that God was not asleep. Said the angel, Jesus says, I know thy works; yes, selfish, professed Sabbath-keepers. God knows thy works. Ye covetous, world-loving Sabbath-keepers, said the angel, God knows thy works. I saw that every privation the servants of God have endured are all written in the book, every tear is bottled up. Every pang of agony they have endured is recorded in the book. I know thy works, says the True Witness. All that has been done to help the servants of God is all recorded; all of it is written in the book. All the selfish withholding from God’s servants are all written in the book. All thy deeds, said the angel, are passing in review before God.

I saw that the church now must afflict their souls. They must labor, they must agonize or go down. I saw it was best to leave the churches to work for themselves now, that they may feel their weakness while there is a chance for them to zealously repent and buy gold, white raiment, and eye salve, the treasures they must possess if they would have eternal life.

Friday July 26, 2013

In the late ‘70s or early ‘80s a big storm system hit the west coast of the US. All along the coast was massive flooding from all the heavy rains. This action carried large numbers of trees and stumps out to the ocean, which in turn used these items as battering rams with every wave as it crashed against whatever was on the coast. The effect was devastating.

Some time after this I went for a walk on a portion of the ocean beach. It was a beautiful day, light breeze, clear skies, clean sand, the waves lapping at your feet as you walk.

It was very warm that day, but I enjoyed the shade of a house… that was about thirty feet in the air over my head! Clearly the owner had wanted a home on the beach and it was built on the sand, but correctly so, so that it was actually supported on piers drilled down to bedrock. And then this storm came by and washed away the sand, totally transforming the beach from a high hill to flat with the ocean for miles, leaving that fine home… thirty feet in the air!

But this is no different than people building on a flood plain. The rains come and the waters rise and presto! muddy water in the home, all over the furniture, mud! And the people are amazed that their TV watching is interrupted! And why the .gov didn’t wave their magic wand and stop the waters!

As humans we do these things because we don’t stop and think, actually think about what we are doing. Most people would rather do anything except think. They hurry from one activity to another never pausing to ask themselves what it is they are trying to accomplish.

These habits affect our spiritual lives also. God, through Ellen, has for years been calling our attention to this deficit, this deficiency in our lives and to stop and take time to pray and meditate.

Sixty eight times this spiritual exercise is mentioned in the thirty original authentic testimonies. I like these.

Sr. —-, work less, and pray and meditate more. Eternal interests should be primary with you. p. 59, Para. 3, [17OT].

Meditation upon heavenly things is profitable, and will ever be accompanied with peace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. p. 149, Para. 3, [17OT].

You look upon the objectionable features in the character of those you associate with, and dwell upon their seeming inconsistencies and wrongs, overlooking their redeeming traits. I was referred to this scripture, “Finally, brethren, Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be ANY virtue, and if there be any praise, think on THESE things.” Here, dear sister, you may meditate and speculate with profit. Dwell upon the good qualities of those with whom you associate, and see as little as possible of their errors and failings. p. 122, Para. 1, [18OT].

We are daily recipients of the bounties of Heaven, and should have loving gratitude springing up in our hearts to God, which should cause us to sympathize with our neighbors and make their interests our own. Thoughts and meditations upon the goodness of God to us would close the avenues of the soul to Satan’s suggestions. p. 118, Para. 3, [27OT].

We live in a very special hour of the plan of salvation. That this was fully known to the disciples is abundantly clear from their words published in the Bible under the inspiration of the Spirit. The following is a perfect example.

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; Acts 3:19

That “times of refreshing” did come beginning October 22, 1844. We know this to be fact because God confirmed the movement of Christ into the Most Holy place on October 23, 1844 in a vision given to his church through Hiram Edson.

We know that the “times of refreshing” did come because in our study of the sanctuary service in the typical, the Day of Atonement was the day of the blotting out of the sins that had been confessed. According to the text, these two events are happening together. So we can say, since the time of the blotting out of sins has come, that means we are in the times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord.

This is intensely interesting. Much, very much of the plan of salvation is focused on this point. We need to bring in another very important text.

and this is the refreshing: Isaiah 28:12

There are sixteen verses in the Bible that us the word refresh in some form. The first two tie this word directly to the Sabbath. Exodus 23:12; 31:17 Very interesting….

And Isaiah 28:12 also says, “This is the rest.” That means that rest and refreshing are very nearly the same thing. Hebrews has something to say on this rest too.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Hebrews 4:9-11

So what is this rest? and what is this refreshing? and what is behind the word this? what is it talking about? Hebrews again has something to say about it.

For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. Hebrews 4:4

“Oh! the Sabbath, it’s the Sabbath!” you say. Not so fast. The answer is both yes and no. It is the Sabbath on the surface, of which the other does not negate, but it is much more than the Sabbath. More from Isaiah.

For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. Isaiah 28:11-13

Have you heard God’s voice speak to you with stammering lips? That’s a real question. How about with another tongue? I know, SDAs are terrified of tongues. I did not write the Bible, that is just what it says. It is saying that God’s voice heard as stammering lips and another tongue is the rest and is the refreshing, BUT, they would not hear it! Why? Because it was foreign to them, it scared them, they were not familiar with it!!!

That is exactly why God says that we need to enter into this rest. We must become familiar with this refreshing. It is God’s voice, that’s what it says. Then it says, “the word of the Lord,” I think that means God’s voice, and it goes on to carefully show us in very explicit language that it must be God’s word, stacked on top of Bible text, on top of God’s word, on top of Bible text, on top of God’s voice in the authentic Spirit of Prophecy, on top of, a total of ten layers deep!!!

What is this? It is very carefully explained in the Bible.

not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:13-14

Right here is a big problem with Laodicea, they think they are rich in spiritual discernment, No. 23, p. 12, when the very fact that they know nothing about the true Sabbath rest and refreshing is prima facie evidence that they most certainly are not.

Better study it! Don’t be a natural man who won’t receive the things of the Spirit of God!

Sabbath July 20, 2013

Patience is required of God’s people.

I saw that it was impossible to have the affections and interests engrossed in worldly cares, increasing their possessions, laying up treasures upon the earth, and yet be in a waiting, watching position, as our Saviour has commanded. Said the angel, “They can secure but one world. In order to acquire the heavenly treasure, they must sacrifice the earthly. They cannot have both worlds.” p. 98, Para. 1, [16OT].

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 2 Peter 3:9-10

Interestingly, on page 94 of the same Testimony we are told that the Master’s sudden coming to find us asleep is actually the closing of probation. This makes the above texts expanded with meaning…..

Today is the Sabbath of the Lord. Part of this watching is to enter that rest spoken of in Hebrews.

Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 2 Peter 3:11

Do you know what this rest really is? It starts in Isaiah 28:12. In short, it is growing up spiritually.

I found this the other day in an un-authenticated manuscript I am examining. It is listed as MS1 1854. Just checked and found this portion on the WECD. What they don’t tell you there is that there is much they have not published out of this MS. More on that later. For now, even though this is not yet authenticated, it is highly probable that it is authentic. But notice the warning about the difference between the milk and the meat.

If those who have been in the church for weeks and months have not learned the straightness of the way, and what it is to be Christians, and cannot hear all the straight truths of the Word of God, it were better that they were cut off from Israel. It is too late in the day to feed with milk. If souls a month or two old in the truth, who are about to enter the time of trouble such as never was, cannot hear all the straight truth, or endure the strong meat of the straightness of the way, how will they stand in the day of battle? Truths that we have been years learning must be learned in a few months by those who now embrace the Third Angel’s Message. We had to search and wait the opening of truth, receiving a ray of light here and a ray there, laboring and pleading for God to reveal truth to us. But now the truth is plain; its rays are brought together. The blazing light of truth when it is presented as it should be can be now seen and brought to bear upon the heart. There is no need of milk after souls are convinced of the truth. As soon as the conviction of truth is yielded to and the heart willing, the truth should have its effect, the truth will work like leaven, and purify and purge away the passions of the natural heart. It is a disgrace for those who have been in the truth for years to talk of feeding souls who have been months in the truth, upon milk. It shows they know little of the leadings of the Spirit of the Lord, and realize not the time we are living in. Those who embrace the truth now will have to step fast. There will have to be a breaking up of heart before the Lord, a rending of heart, and not the garment. Ms. 1, 1854, pp. 2, 3. {1MR 33.4}

Folks, it’s high time to get real serious with God and your own life. Write me and ask if you want to know. I am available. I will give you straight answers. I am a sinner, a brand that God plucked from the burning. In helping you I help myself. That is God’s plan. We are to work for each other’s spiritual life.

Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 2 Peter 3:12-13

This work of correcting wrongs, calling liars liars, tearing down the high walls of Jericho to expose the false foundations of many generations, is not easy. Unfortunately there is a distance between me, through this site, and you, wherever you may be. We pray that God will fill that distance and provide the ‘touch’ missing between the words and the reader.

We fully believe the following words apply in every case.

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him John 6:44

May God draw you to the truth is our prayer. But many are offended at the position we take and labor to turn others from the truth. God is no stranger to all this. He counsels us.

If persons are as deserving to be separated from the church as Satan was of being cast out of Heaven, they will have sympathizers. There is always a class who are more influenced by individuals than they are controlled by the Spirit of God and sound principles; and they are, in their unconsecrated state, ever ready to take up upon the wrong side, and give their pity and sympathy to the very ones who least deserve it. These sympathizers have a powerful influence with others, and things are seen in a perverted light, and great harm is done, and many souls ruined. Satan, in his rebellion, took a third part of the angels. They turned from the Father and from his Son, and united with the instigator of rebellion. With these facts before us, we should move with the greatest caution. What can we expect in our connection with men and women with peculiar minds but trials and perplexity. We must bear this, and avoid the necessity of rooting up the tares, lest the wheat be rooted up also. p. 174, Para. 2, [21OT].

In the world ye shall have tribulation, but in me ye shall have peace. The trials to which Christians are subjected in sorrow, adversity, and reproach, are the appointed means of God to separate the chaff from the wheat. Our selfishness, love of worldly pleasure, evil passions, and pride, must be all overcome, and therefore God sends us afflictions to test and prove us, and show us that these evils exist in our characters; and we must, through his strength and grace, overcome, that we may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. “For our light affliction,” says Paul, “which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” Afflictions, crosses, temptations, adversity, and our varied trials, are God’s workmen to refine us, sanctify us, and fit us for the heavenly garner. p. 175, Para. 1, [21OT].

We strive to hold high the banner of truth and hold out the hand of help. Many, very many will never get on the Ark, only eight did. This reminds us of a text.

Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth? Luke 18:8

We pray that you will be one of the faithful that will “prove all things” and “hold fast that which is good.”
