That man might not lose the blessed results of benevolence, our Redeemer formed the plan of enlisting him as his co-worker.

Being a co-worker is not the same as a co-redeemer, as some claim against those who promote the Bible position of faith and works.

By a chain of circumstances which would call forth his charities, he brings man under the best means of cultivating benevolence, and keeps him habitually giving to help the poor, and to advance his cause. He sends his poor as the representatives of himself. A ruined world is drawing forth from us by their necessities talents of means and of influence to present to them the truth [the Word], of which they are in perishing need.

A pure chain of texts shows exactly what it means “to present to them the truth.”

1.) Psalms 119:105 where God defines his word as a lamp and a light. The other words tell what they are used for.

2.) In Genesis 5:17 God adds the word burning to lamp, thus we have God’s word as both a burning and a lamp.

3.) Back to Psalms 119:135, here God defines to shine means to teach.

4.) John 17:17 is the definition of truth. God says it is his word.

5.) John 5:35 is where Christ was discussing John the Baptist. Christ identified John as a burning and a shining light.

We know that John the Baptist was a representative of the 144,000, the saints who are living in the end of Matthew 24:14.

John was a representative of the people of God in the last days, to whom God has committed important and solemn truths. Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2, page 44.

Now we can say, in order “to present to them the truth” God people must be like John the Baptist who, Christ says, was God’s word teaching God’s word. That is the spiritual definition of “a burning and a shining light” as taught by God.

And as we heed these calls, by labor and acts of benevolence, [faith and works] we are assimilated into the image of him [the Word] who for our sakes became poor. In bestowing, we bless others, and thus accumulate the true riches. p. 74, Para. 1, [24OT].

The moral darkness of a ruined world pleads to Christian men and women to put forth individual effort, to give of their means, and of their influence, that they may be assimilated into the image of Him [the Word] who, though he possessed infinite riches, yet for our sakes became poor. The Spirit of God cannot abide with those to whom he has sent the message of his truth [the Word], who need to be urged before they can have any sense of their duty to be co-workers with Christ. The apostle enforces the duty of giving from higher grounds than merely human sympathy, because the feelings are moved. He enforces the principle that we should labor unselfishly with an eye single to the glory of God. p. 88, Para. 2, [24OT].

Perfecting your character is a work every bit of which is glorifying God. It is a work of faith and works together, and a cleaning of ourselves by taking a shower, as it were, in the living water of the Word. Following the example of Christ in all things.

Now comes clear the imagery of Paul as he identifies this very process.

That he might sanctify and cleanse it [the church] with the washing of water by the word, Ephesians 5:26

How amazing!!! So much comes clear as we correctly understand the Word and God’s definitions for that Word.

I like the story of Enoch, always have. It has a fascinating connection with Heaven. Here is what the Bible says.

And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. Genesis 5:22-24

You can’t walk with God unless you are in agreement with him.

Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Amos 3:3

And the Bible is full of this. Here are just a few texts.

I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. Genesis 17:1

If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul 1 Kings 2:4

walk as children of light: Ephesians 5:2, 8

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, 1 John 1:7

Not being in agreement with God is called carnal. And it says that we are not walking with God.

are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 1 Corinthians 3:3

This is also about perfection.

“Those who have experienced the cleansing efficacy of the blood of Christ upon their hearts will be like their Master, pure, peaceable, and lowly of heart. No matter how bold and earnest one may be in his claims of spiritual soundness, and perfection of character, if he lacks Christian grace and humility, the dregs of the disease of sin is in his nature, and, unless it is purged from him, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. The truly holy, who walk with God like Enoch of old, will not be boastful of their purity, but be courteous, humble, unselfish, free from spiritual pride and exaltation. Those who know most of God, and keep their eye fixed on the Author and Finisher of their faith will see nothing good or great in themselves. They will feel, after doing all in their power to be faithful, that they are yet unprofitable servants. p. 211, Para. 3, [LS80].

Enoch is also a symbol of God’s people in the time of the end.

Enoch, separating himself from the world, and spending much of his time in prayer and in communion with God, represents God’s loyal people in the last days who will be separate from the world. p. 64, Para. 3, [1SP].

God’s people will separate themselves from the unrighteous practices of those around them, and will seek for purity of thought, and holy conformity to his will, until his divine image will be reflected in them. Like Enoch they will be fitting for translation to Heaven. p. 65, Para. 1, [1SP].

All this is in a perfect and beautiful harmony with what the 1858 Great Controversy has to say on this subject.

God’s people were then accepted with him. Jesus looked upon them with pleasure. His image was reflected in them. They had made a full sacrifice, an entire consecration, and expected to be changed to immortality. p. 141, 1858 Great Controversy

Yes, it was the time of the great disappointment, but it was also a time when God’s people were perfect, ready for the physical change from mortal to immortal, or, for the grave. I have watched many go to the grave. I can not count any that I knew who were preparing for translation. All had a false hope that God was going to wave a magic wand over them and change them into perfect Christians.

No, we must “cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” 2 Corinthians 7:1. That’s God’s appointed way to get ready for Heaven.

There was one more point I wanted to present from that Review & Herald of May 6, 1862.

There is no Bible sanctification for those who cast a part of the truth behind them.

To me this is the same as the application of the Christ’s righteousness to our life. It does not cover unconfessed and unforsaken sin. We are plainly told that we must repent and confess our sins that they can be blotted out of the book in the Most Holy place experience, called, the great anti-typical Day of Atonement. This is God’s appointed way. Too many run in the way of Cain and try to get to Heaven some other way!

There is light enough given in the word of God, so that none need to err. The truth is so elevated as to be admired by the greatest minds, and yet it is so simple that the humblest feeblest child of God can comprehend it, and be instructed by it. Those who see not the beauty that there is in the truth, who attach no importance to the third angel’s message, will be without excuse; for the truth is plain.

2 Cor. iv, 3, 4: “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost; in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

I never cease to be totally amazed at the hiding of the gospel; for it is hid in plain sight! And here we have the authentic Spirit of Prophecy declaring the truth, then quoting this amazing text. Everything is laid out so plainly, the exact reason and cause for the hiding is given. None can plead ignorance of the facts.

John xvii, 17, 19: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.”

1 Pet. i, 22: “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently.”

2 Cor. vii, 1: “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Phil. ii, 12-15: “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you, both to will and to do his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings; that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.”

John xv, 3: “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”

Eph. v, 25-27: “Husbands, love your wives even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

Here is Bible sanctification. It is not merely a show or outside work. It is sanctification received through the channel of truth. It is truth received in the heart, and practically carried out in the life.

We can be perfect. We can overcome sin in our life; all sin can be overcome. Here is how.

Every branch in the parent vine must derive life and strength from that vine, in order to yield fruit.

The only question is, will you follow in God’s appointed way?

Sunday June 9, 2013

After reading a great deal of material I believe that there is a preferred limited way the matter about perfection should be stated. That way is to simply state it following God’s example, with very little other commentary. Here is the finest example I have found to date, it is from the Review & Herald of May 6, 1862.

Here is Bible sanctification. It is not merely a show or outside work. It is sanctification received through the channel of truth. It is truth received in the heart, and practically carried out in the life.

Jesus considered as a man was perfect. Yet he grew in grace. [I remember the shock! I felt the first time I read these words.]

Luke ii, 52: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” Even the most perfect Christian may increase continually in the knowledge and love of God.

2 Pet. iii, 14, 18: “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless. But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.”

Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, or a day. It is a continual growth in grace. We know not one day how strong will be our conflict the next. Satan lives, and is active, and every day we need to earnestly cry to God for help and strength to resist him. As long as Satan reigns we shall have self to subdue, besetments to overcome, and there is no stopping place. There is no point to which we can come and say we have fully attained.

Phil. iii, 12: “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect; but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.”

It is constantly an onward march. Jesus sits as a refiner and purifier of his people, and when his image is reflected in them perfectly, they are perfect and holy, and prepared for translation. A great work is required of the Christian. We are exhorted to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Here we see where the great labor rests. There is a constant work for the Christian. Every branch in the parent vine must derive life and strength from that vine, in order to yield fruit.

I take the above to mean that you and I can become perfect, sinless, reflecting the image of Christ perfectly, holy, prepared for translation, and not know it; saying to all that there is no stopping place, neither have we fully attained.

We become like Christ, combating Satan every day. We will be in the same position as the pioneers, as depicted on page 142 of the 1858 Great Controversy.

God’s people were then accepted with him. Jesus looked upon them with pleasure. His image was reflected in them.

This is our goal, our striving, our honor, to be like Christ.

Few subjects carry the import that the Sanctuary and it’s services does. The Sanctuary was given to the children of Israel, and by extension to us, to teach by illustration the work of the Father and Christ.

When Christ left this earth he entered the Holy place as our High Priest and there to minister until October 22, 1844, at which point the Father went into the Most Holy and Christ followed, there to continue as our High Priest “making his final intercession” during the great anti-typical Day of Atonement services. 1858 Great Controversy, page 163 and you are urged to read it.

Participating in these services by faith is mandatory for all who have light available to them about the Sanctuary message. This is a part of walking in the light of the Midnight Cry because it is that light that points to the Sanctuary. This the GCSDA church has rejected, years ago. Today it is much easier to spot because the apostasy has matured.

The following is some notes on this video* where SDA Pastor Gifford Rhamie at the SEC and NEC Campmeeting 2011, is on camera stating (25 seconds into the video), “in the Hebrew concept of perfection, there is no understanding of flawlessness, or sinlessness” “however we understand the word perfect today we have injected this notion of flawlessness and sinlessness.” He quotes from his studies in hermeneutics, exegesis, &c., bringing man’s wisdom to the study of God’s word. “this is how it ought to be understood” “in the Bible perfect or perfection does not reference flawlessness or sinlessness, it never is.”

The video is here interrupted by apparently some Q&A. A brave soul speaks up rebuking the apostasy with the voice of truth, that we must be sinlessly perfect before our probation closes.

The video is again cut and the pastor continues, “listen to me! the work of sanctification is not leading a sinless life, because you will never get there.”

This is the mantra of the SDA church, hook, line and sinker. To teach no perfection is to teach that you must sin. To teach that perfection has a different meaning other than perfect is to teach that perfection means you must sin. This is what this pastor is teaching.

Here is what God would teach us.

Our wrong habits cannot be taken to Heaven with us and unless overcome here, they will shut us out of the abode of the righteous. Bad habits, when opposed, will offer the most vigorous resistance; but if the warfare is kept up, with energy, and perseverance, they may be conquered. p. 188, Para. 3, [30OT].

In order to form correct habits, we should seek the company of persons of sound moral and religious influence. We should constantly bear in mind that we may be fitting to inhabit the heavenly courts. The precious hours of probation are granted that we may remove every defect from the character; and we should seek to do this, not only that we may obtain the future life, but that we may be useful here. p. 189, Para. 1, [30OT].

And there are a great many more lines that could be placed here, but this is enough.

If there is no perfection here, then where? Where is the following of Christ? If Christ is not perfect in Heaven in the sight of his Father, he would be destroyed. Remember that Ellen did not actually go to Heaven, she was show in vision, in a virtual 3-D reality, many things that God had for the church. It appears that is why she could behold Holy things and not be destroyed.

Think about the resurrection. There is no time then to work on our character.

*A note about the video. They are using the counterfeit SOP which we know is highly dangerous. We do not approve of such a position. Every position must be in perfect harmony with the KJV Bible, the authentic Spirit of Prophecy, and the true pioneers. These three, in this order, have been set in the church by God for our guidance.

Controlling our minds is a primary goal. This is a putting on of the armor. Without doing this, we make and keep ourselves venerable to the devices of Satan.

Some good counsel on this point follows, see if it makes sense to you.

It is the special work of Satan in these last days to take possession of the minds of youth, to corrupt their thoughts, and inflame their passions, knowing that by thus doing he can lead them to moral pollution, and then all the noble faculties of the mind will become debased, and he can control them to suit his own purposes. All are free moral agents. And as such they must bring their thoughts to run in the right channel. Their meditations should be of that nature which will elevate their minds, and make Jesus and heaven the subjects of their thoughts. Here is a wide field in which the mind can safely range. If Satan seeks to divert the mind from this to low and sensual things, bring it back again, and place it on eternal things; and when the Lord sees the determined effort made to retain only pure thoughts, he will attract the mind, like the magnet, and purify the thoughts, and enable them to cleanse themselves from every secret sin. “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” The first work for those who would reform, is to purify the imagination. If the mind is led out in a vicious direction, it must be restrained to dwell only upon pure and elevated subjects. When tempted to yield to a corrupt imagination, then flee to the throne of grace and pray for strength from Heaven. In the strength of God the imagination can be restricted to dwell upon things which are pure and heavenly. p. 29, Para. 3, [APM].

You can be a happy family if you will do what God has given you to do, and enjoined upon you as a duty to perform. God will not do for you that which he has left for you to do. Bro. —– deserves pity. He has so long felt unhappy that life has become a burden to him. It need not be thus. His imagination is diseased, and, if he meets with adversity or disappointment, he has so long kept his eyes on the dark picture that he imagines every thing is going to ruin, that he will come to want, that everything is against him, that he has the hardest time of any one; and thus his life is made wretched. The more he thinks thus, the more miserable he makes his life and the lives of all around him. He has no reason to feel as he does; it is all the work of Satan. He must not suffer Satan thus to control his mind. He should turn his mind away from the dark and gloomy picture to that of the loving Saviour, the glory of Heaven, the rich inheritance prepared for all who shall be humble and obedient, possessing grateful hearts and abiding faith in the promises of God. This will cost him an effort, a struggle, but it must be done. Your present happiness and your eternal, future happiness, depend upon your fixing your mind upon cheerful things, looking away from the dark picture, which is imaginary, to the unseen, eternal, and the benefits God has strewn in your pathway. p. 93, Para. 1, [14OT].

Ahh! Peace, wonderful peace! in Christ we can live and have life. Outside of Christ, death reigns.

I found a beautiful text. Christ is talking to Paul, giving him instruction.

To open their eyes, and to turn them
from         darkness          to light, and
from the power of Satan unto God,
that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.  Acts 26:18

Notice the parallelism here. Darkness is the power of Satan and light is God. This last part is reflected in

God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.  1 John 1:5

Sabbath April 27, 2013

Recently I was searching on the phrase “work of Satan” and found this passage. Feeling especially the need of order in my own life and seeing how God is leading me down that path, developing and infusing order into my character, I wanted to share and praise the name of God.

All the universe is watching. With me, I am sure they saw the dis-organization and lack of order. It certainly becomes us to praise God with our actions, not just words. This would be faith and works, working together the thing that is good. Praise God!

If discipline and order is necessary for successful action on the battle field, the same order is as much more needful in the warfare in which we are engaged, to that degree that the object to be gained is of greater value and more elevated in character, than the warfare of opposing forces upon the battle field. In this conflict in which we are engaged, eternal consequences are at stake. Angels work harmoniously. Perfect order characterizes all their movements. p. 25, Para. 2, [14OT ].

The more closely we imitate the harmony and order of the angelic host, the more successful will be the efforts of these heavenly agents in our behalf. If we see no necessity of harmonious action, and are disorderly, undisciplined and disorganized in our course of action, angels who are thoroughly organized, and move in perfect order, cannot work for us successfully. They turn away in grief for they are not authorized to bless confusion, distraction and disorganization. p. 25, Para. 3, [14OT ].

All who desire the co-operation of the heavenly messengers, must work in unison with them to the same end. If they have the unction from on high, their efforts will be to encourage order, discipline and union of action. Then can the angels of God co-operate with them. But never, never will these heavenly messengers place their endorsement upon irregularity, disorganization and disorder. All these evils are the result of the work of Satan to weaken our forces, and destroy courage, and successful action. p. 26, Para. 1, [14OT ].

Satan well knows that success can only attend order and harmonious action. He well knows that every thing connected with Heaven is in perfect order. Subjection and thorough discipline mark the movements of the angelic host. Satan’s studied efforts are to lead professed Christians just as far from Heaven’s arrangement as he can. Therefore he deceives even the professed people of God, and makes them believe that order and discipline are enemies to the spirituality of God’s people; that the only safety for them is to each pursue his or her own course, and to remain especially distinct from bodies of Christians who are united, and are laboring to establish discipline and harmony of action. All the efforts made to establish order are considered dangerous, and are feared as popery, a restriction of right and liberty. p. 26, Para. 2, [14OT ].

These deceived souls consider it a virtue to boast of their freedom to think and act independently. They will not take any man’s say so. They are amenable to no man. I was shown that it is Satan’s especial work to lead men to feel that it is God’s order for them to strike out for themselves, and choose their own course, independent of their brethren. p. 26, Para. 3, [14OT ].

A word further about this passage is warranted. Choose very carefully just who your “brethren” shall be, those with whom you associate. Because you know the only Bible to use is the KJV and that there is a very wide chasm between the authentic Spirit of Prophecy and the counterfeit, then you should choose associates of the same belief.

If you can not find such, perhaps it is God’s call to you to draw within your circle those with whom you can share and teach the truth. If we depart from the teachings of the true Advent pioneers, those who have been in all the messages and are firm in all the present truth, we are leaving the light of the Midnight Cry, which gives light for our feet that we might not stumble, all the way to the city.

Be humble enough to follow the leader, Christ, and those he has appointed to blaze the trail, especially his prophet, Ellen. Otherwise you invite the deceptions of Satan to cloud your understanding of the simplest things.

Distractions. This word has an interesting connotation.

verb (used with object)
1. to draw away or divert, as the mind or attention:
The music distracted him from his work.

Notice the example used in the above definition, in italics. To my mind a distraction is a drawing away from the top priority of the moment. Not always, of course, but usually.

Spiritually our top priority is to perfect our character for Heaven. Our probation closes at death, for most of mankind. Failure to form a character fit for Heaven and eternal life, in this life, means failing to secure eternal life.

In this context, everything about life on earth could be a distraction. God has it all planned out however. All we need to do is follow his directions. But we must take time to read the directions.

Here is one.

Let your moderation be known unto all men.  Philippians 4:5

Notice it does not say, extreme. It’s the world that wants, extreme, to be known to all. That is headline making stuff!
While we have to work, we don’t have to work like the world does. And the same holds true for every area of life. God want’s us to live in the world like Christ did, in the first part, mostly.

What do most people do? They get up and go to work, put in a full day, come home and watch TV til bedtime. That’s the short version.

God calls us to TAKE time out of our schedule; to do certain things. After getting vertical in the morning we need to eat something. God wants us to eat some manna —which is a phrase that means to read some instruction from God first, before eating physical food, because that would be a distraction from the instruction.

This probably means that you need to be getting up earlier; which probably means that you need to be going to bed earlier, which probably means that you can not do so much in the evening. It all ties in. If it sounds like too much for you, think about this: eternal: life.

When you decide to make your character formation the top priority in your life, suddenly the things of this world take on a whole different perspective. Most of what the world has to offer is a distraction from your top priority, perfecting your character, getting ready for Heaven.

I know at least two women who purposely get up very early, one at 4:00 AM, just to study. Why? Because they are serious! Eternal Life is at stake! The people before the flood lived a few hundred years! now we only get seventy.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.  Psalms 90:10

It’s hard to exercise this kind of faith. But it becomes a labour of love.

Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.  Luke 13:24

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest,  Hebrews 4:11

It’s going to take work, effort, because you are going to have to do a lot of reading. You must get correct information inside your mind. THAT is the key to making good decisions, taking good actions.

Said the angel, “Deny self, ye must step fast.” I saw that some of us have had time to get the truth, and to advance step by step, and every step we have taken has given us strength to take the next. But now time is almost finished, and what we have been years learning, they will have to unlearn much, and learn again. And those who will not receive the mark of the beast and his image, when the decree goes forth, must have decision now to say, nay, we will not regard the institution of the beast. p. 29, Para. 2, [CEV].

After all that heavy work and labour, God has a beautiful promise.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Matthew 11:28

Hebrews 11, the faith chapter. After reading it today, you might be inclined to think of it more as the “good report” chapter.

1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3  Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear [the instruction of God], prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10  For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11  Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12  Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
13  These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14  For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15  And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16  But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
17  By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18  Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19  Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
20  By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21  By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
22  By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
23  By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
24  By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
25  Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
26  Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
27  By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
28  Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
29  By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.
30  By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
31  By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
32  And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
33  Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34  Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35  Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
36  And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
37  They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
38  (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
39  And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Reflecting Christ’s image is required.

I also saw that many did not realize what they must be in order to live in the sight of the Lord, without a High Priest in the Sanctuary, through the time of trouble. Those who receive the seal of the living God, and are protected in the time of trouble, must reflect the image of Jesus fully. p. 30, Para. 4, [CEV].

Here are some interesting texts on the subject that I never noticed before.

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, Romans 8:29-30

And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. 1 Corinthians 15:44-50

…the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Corinthians 4:4

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. Colossians 1:12-17

And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Colossians 3:8-10

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Hebrews 1:1-3

Without going into the hidden treasure at all, it is very plain about the importance of being in Christ’s image.

Those who corrupt their own bodies cannot enjoy the favor of God, until they sincerely repent, make an entire reform, and perfect holiness in the fear of the Lord. None can be Christians and indulge in habits which debilitate the system, and bring on a state of prostration of the vital forces, which end in making a complete wreck of beings formed in the image of God. This moral pollution will certainly bring its reward. The cause must bring the results. Those who profess to be disciples of Christ should be elevated in all their thoughts and acts, and should ever realize that they are fitting for immortality, and that if saved, they must be without spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing. Their Christian character must be without a blemish, or they will be pronounced unfit to be taken to a holy heaven, to dwell with pure, sinless beings in God’s everlasting kingdom. p. 29, Para. 2, [APM].

If we are formed in God’s image to start with, it must be sin that de–forms us. This passage nicely gives us the steps to get back to that image.

It is a journey however, one that will put you into the dream of No. 20, pages 28-32. Check it out, you just might find it interesting.
