These Bible words make a nice lesson. Watch the parallel phrases and words, then the definitions.

To know wisdom and instruction;
To perceive the words of understanding;

To know is to perceive. Wisdom and instruction are words of understanding.

To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
To give subtilty to the simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion.

To receive instruction is giving subtilty and knowledge and discretion.

A wise man will hear,
and will increase learning; and

Hearing is to increase learning and attaining.

A man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

A wise man is a man of understanding and understanding is wise counsels.

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation;
the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. Proverbs 1:2-6

A proverb is the words of the wise and the interpretation is a dark saying.

There is no true wisdom apart from God and all wisdom is in fact Christ, the Word, in you, the hope of glory; the same Word was in the beginning, “and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:1-5

So God sent John the Baptist before Jesus Christ to prepare the way; “John was a representative of the people of God in the last days, to whom God has committed important and solemn truths,” Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2, page 44. Of him Christ said, he was God’s word teaching God’s word, John 5:35.

This means… that if you accept this method of hearing and increasing your learning, you will come to know wisdom, instruction and perceive words of understanding, you will receive instruction from God, gain subtilty, knowledge, discretion, the understanding of proverbs, parables, the words of the wise men of God and their dark sayings and be obedient to this instruction.

You will become a part of that group of the people of God in the last days of whom John the Baptist was a representative. Think very carefully of how John lived… and died.

The idea of freedom is very profound. In America most people have some basic ideas about freedom, even today, in spite of strong attempts to educate them away from it. Freedom is a God given right. All have the power of choice. The exercise of this power is where the price comes in.

In 1979 John Singer was murdered by the government for his refusal to stop homeschooling his children. Obviously there is much more to the story than that and the winners are the ones who write history. Interestingly, since then, homeschooling was made legal in every state in America.

Now, 34 years later, new people are on the scene of action and they only have the history written by the winners of the conflict and these, typically, know little of the principles of freedom. Because of this ignorance these newbies to the scene of action, probably heavily influenced by others of more experience but with an agenda who are behind the scenes, are promoting government action to hinder and halt homeschooling. And this in spite of and in the face of, the near total failure of government mandated education.

The point of all this is that should you happen to have children of your own whom you think should have a higher, better education than the world has to offer, you are going to have a price to pay for exercising your freedom.

Now, what about if you want to exercise your freedom of choice about the food you eat? Suppose you choose to use raw milk. In parts of America it has become a crime for a person to offer such a basic food as raw milk to those who choose to use it. Amazing! Suddenly, if you are going to exercise your freedom in this matter you are going to have to pay a price.

Because God has forewarned us, in No. 6, page 22, that in the near future Sunday will be made a test by the federal government, you will have to make a decision about your freedom of choice. Once again government is taking away your freedom, only this time God is intimately involved. Because God’s law is not recognized by the government you will suffer punishment from them for the exercise of your freedom.

Apparently that is the opening salvo of the final, open battle, leading to the Loud Cry, which is God’s final call to the planet, then the close of human probation.

But suppose you are a woman and you choose to honor God by searching out all the information on dress reform and cherishing that light by being obedient to it. Your choice to exercise your freedom will cost you. Violations of any of the world’s maxims carries a penalty, not necessarily by law, but by worldly social pressure. Especially is this true for women.

I was reading the 1849 Broadside; Ellen was taken to visit other worlds. God was showing his church that these other beings were given the same test as Adam and Eve. They had both trees. More importantly, they had the power of choice, freedom, God given freedom to choose, just like Adam and Eve. And Satan is available to tempt and annoy. But all have exercised their freedom by choosing to follow God’s instruction and being obedient to a loving God.

This is exactly where the saints in this, our day, will all be; in perfect harmony with God’s will. Exercising their God given freedom to choose to be obedient to all God’s righteous requirements. They will be safe to give immortality.

None are compelled to go to Heaven. Hence the tests. God has several tests for his professed followers, some are very evident, some must be searched out and re-discovered by study, cherishing the light that you have, which is honored by God by giving you more.

Dress reform is a case in point and a perfect example of what we have been talking about.

God has been testing his people. He allowed the testimony concerning dress to become silent, that our sisters might follow their own inclination, and thus develop the real pride existing in their hearts. It was to prevent the present state of worldliness that the reform dress was recommended. Many scorned the idea that this dress was necessary to preserve them from following the fashions. The Lord has permitted them to prove that pride was cherished in their hearts, and that this was just what they would do. And it is now shown that they needed the restriction which the reform dress imposed. p. 167, Para. 1, [30OT].

Everyone has freedom. It’s up to each one to choose to exercise that freedom, or not. The price varies. The reward varies.
