The idea of freedom is very profound. In America most people have some basic ideas about freedom, even today, in spite of strong attempts to educate them away from it. Freedom is a God given right. All have the power of choice. The exercise of this power is where the price comes in.

In 1979 John Singer was murdered by the government for his refusal to stop homeschooling his children. Obviously there is much more to the story than that and the winners are the ones who write history. Interestingly, since then, homeschooling was made legal in every state in America.

Now, 34 years later, new people are on the scene of action and they only have the history written by the winners of the conflict and these, typically, know little of the principles of freedom. Because of this ignorance these newbies to the scene of action, probably heavily influenced by others of more experience but with an agenda who are behind the scenes, are promoting government action to hinder and halt homeschooling. And this in spite of and in the face of, the near total failure of government mandated education.

The point of all this is that should you happen to have children of your own whom you think should have a higher, better education than the world has to offer, you are going to have a price to pay for exercising your freedom.

Now, what about if you want to exercise your freedom of choice about the food you eat? Suppose you choose to use raw milk. In parts of America it has become a crime for a person to offer such a basic food as raw milk to those who choose to use it. Amazing! Suddenly, if you are going to exercise your freedom in this matter you are going to have to pay a price.

Because God has forewarned us, in No. 6, page 22, that in the near future Sunday will be made a test by the federal government, you will have to make a decision about your freedom of choice. Once again government is taking away your freedom, only this time God is intimately involved. Because God’s law is not recognized by the government you will suffer punishment from them for the exercise of your freedom.

Apparently that is the opening salvo of the final, open battle, leading to the Loud Cry, which is God’s final call to the planet, then the close of human probation.

But suppose you are a woman and you choose to honor God by searching out all the information on dress reform and cherishing that light by being obedient to it. Your choice to exercise your freedom will cost you. Violations of any of the world’s maxims carries a penalty, not necessarily by law, but by worldly social pressure. Especially is this true for women.

I was reading the 1849 Broadside; Ellen was taken to visit other worlds. God was showing his church that these other beings were given the same test as Adam and Eve. They had both trees. More importantly, they had the power of choice, freedom, God given freedom to choose, just like Adam and Eve. And Satan is available to tempt and annoy. But all have exercised their freedom by choosing to follow God’s instruction and being obedient to a loving God.

This is exactly where the saints in this, our day, will all be; in perfect harmony with God’s will. Exercising their God given freedom to choose to be obedient to all God’s righteous requirements. They will be safe to give immortality.

None are compelled to go to Heaven. Hence the tests. God has several tests for his professed followers, some are very evident, some must be searched out and re-discovered by study, cherishing the light that you have, which is honored by God by giving you more.

Dress reform is a case in point and a perfect example of what we have been talking about.

God has been testing his people. He allowed the testimony concerning dress to become silent, that our sisters might follow their own inclination, and thus develop the real pride existing in their hearts. It was to prevent the present state of worldliness that the reform dress was recommended. Many scorned the idea that this dress was necessary to preserve them from following the fashions. The Lord has permitted them to prove that pride was cherished in their hearts, and that this was just what they would do. And it is now shown that they needed the restriction which the reform dress imposed. p. 167, Para. 1, [30OT].

Everyone has freedom. It’s up to each one to choose to exercise that freedom, or not. The price varies. The reward varies.

God Bless your Choice

Notice God’s plan for the perfecting of the saints. Read carefully and notice what is being said. This is the correct understanding of many things regarding perfection.

It is not an easy matter to overcome established habits of taste and appetite for narcotics and stimulants. In the name of Christ alone can this great victory be gained. He overcame in behalf of man in the wilderness of temptation, in the long fast of nearly six weeks. He sympathizes with the weakness of man. His love for fallen man was so great that he made [an] infinite sacrifice that he might teach him in his degradation, and through his divine power elevate him finally to his throne. But it rests with man whether Christ shall accomplish for him that which he is fully able to do. p. 39, Para. 1, [26OT].

Will man take hold of divine power, and with determination and perseverance resist Satan as Christ has given him example in his conflict with the foe in the wilderness of temptation? God cannot save man, against his will, from the power of Satan’s artifices. Man must work with his human power, aided by the divine power of Christ, to resist and to conquer at any cost to himself. In short, man must overcome as Christ overcame. And then, through the victory it is his privilege to gain by the all-powerful name of Jesus, he may become an heir of God and joint heir with Jesus Christ. p. 39, Para. 2, [26OT].

This could not be the case if Christ alone did all the overcoming. Man must do his part. Man must be victor on his own account, through the strength and grace that Jesus gives him. Man must be a co-worker with Christ in the labor of overcoming,

Notice the correcting wording of the matter. It is imperative that you forget all about the devices of Satan in the suggestions of saying, “man is not a co-saviour with Christ,” subtly implying that Christ does all the work, the righteousness of Christ covers everything, only believe. Such reasoning is a lie!  God has correctly stated the matter this way “Man must be a co-worker with Christ in the labor of overcoming,” and there we are to leave it, live it, repeat it.

and then he will be partaker with Christ of his glory. It is a sacred work in which we are engaged. The apostle exhorts his brethren, “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” p. 40, Para. 1, [26OT].

It is a sacred duty that we owe to God to keep the spirit pure, as a temple for the Holy Ghost. If the heart and mind are devoted to the service of God, obeying all his commandments, loving him with all the heart, might, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves, we will be found loyal and true to the requirements of Heaven. p. 40, Para. 2, [26OT].

Since we were in No. 18, over eggs, I found several other items of interest and thought to place them here to pique your interest in reading this book. It is wonderful.

But when we take any course which decreases our strength, expends our vitality beclouds the intellect, and destroys the powers of the mind, we sin against God. In pursuing this course we are not glorifying him in our bodies and spirits which are his; but are committing a great wrong in his sight. p. 1, Para. 3, [18OT].

Even if you are most strict in the quality of your food, do you glorify God in your bodies and spirits, which are his, by partaking of such a quantity of food? Those who place so much food upon the stomach, and thus load down nature, could not appreciate the truth, should they hear it dwelt upon. They could not arouse the benumbed sensibilities of the brain to realize the value of the atonement, and the great sacrifice that has been made for fallen man. It is impossible for such to appreciate the great, precious, and exceedingly rich reward that is in reserve for the faithful overcomers. The animal part of our nature should never be left to govern the moral and intellectual. p. 15, Para. 1, [18OT].

When I have been from home sometimes, the bread, and the food generally, brought upon the table, I knew would hurt me. But I would have to eat a little to sustain life. I have suffered for want of proper food. It is a sin in the sight of Heaven to have such food. p. 28, Para. 2, [18OT].

_____ _____ has been very deficient. His wife was not provided with wholesome food, and a plenty of it, and proper clothing, while in her best condition of health. Then, when she needed extra clothing and extra food, and that of a simple, yet nutritious quality, it was not allowed her. Her system craved material to convert into blood; but he would not provide it. A moderate amount of milk and sugar, a little salt, white bread raised with yeast, for a change, graham flour prepared by other hands than her own, in a variety of ways, plain cake with raisins cooked in it, rice pudding with raisins, prunes, and figs, occasionally, and many dishes I might mention, would have answered the demand of appetite. If he could not obtain some of these things mentioned, a little domestic wine [just like Paul counseled!] would have done her no injury, but would have been better than for her to have done without it. In some cases, even a small amount of the least hurtful meat would do less injury than to suffer strong cravings for it. p. 44, Para. 2, [18OT].

Regularity in eating is very important for health of body and serenity of mind. p. 68, Para. 2, [18OT].

Violent exercise should not be engaged in immediately after a full meal; neither should the student engage in study; for this would be a violation of the laws of the system. Immediately after eating, there is a strong draught upon the nervous energy, calling into active exercise the brain force, concentrating it upon the field of labor, which is the stomach; therefore when the mind or body is taxed heavily after eating, the process of digestion is hindered. The electricity of the system, which is wanted to carry on the work in one direction, is called away and set to work in another. p. 87, Para. 2, [18OT].

The brain nerve-energy is benumbed and almost paralyzed by being over-taxed through overeating. p. 89, Para. 2, [18OT].

By the law is the knowledge of sin. The mirror which would discover to them the defects in their character, they are infuriated against, because it points out their sins. Leading Adventists who have rejected the light are fired with madness against God’s holy law, as the Jewish nation were against the Son of God. They are in a terrible deception, deceiving souls and being deceived themselves. They will not come to the light lest their deeds should be reproved. Such will not be taught. But the people who profess to keep the law of God, he corrects, he reproves. He points out their sins, and lays open their iniquity; because he wishes to separate all sin and wickedness from them, that they may perfect holiness in his fear, and be prepared to die in the Lord, or for translation to Heaven. God will rebuke, reprove, and correct them. That they may be refined, sanctified, elevated, and finally exalted to his own throne. p. 144, Para. 2, [18OT].

Ample provisions have been made for all who sincerely, earnestly, and thoughtfully, set about the work of perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Power and strength, grace and glory, have been provided through Christ, to be brought by ministering angels to the heirs of salvation. None are so low, and corrupt, and vile, but that they can find in Jesus, who died for them, strength, purity, and righteousness, if they will put away their sins, stop their course of iniquity, and turn with full purpose of heart to the living God. He is waiting to strip them of their garments, stained and polluted by sin, and to put upon them the white, bright robes of righteousness; and he bids them live and not die. In him they may flourish. Their branches will not wither nor be fruitless. If they abide in him, they can draw sap and nourishment from him, be imbued with his Spirit, and walk even as he has walked, and overcome as he has overcome, and be exalted to his own right hand. p. 146, Para. 1, [18OT].

The word of God is sufficient to enlighten the most beclouded mind, to be understood by those who have any wish to understand it. But notwithstanding all this, some of those who profess to make the word of God their study, are found living in direct opposition to its plainest teachings. Then to leave men and women without excuse, God has given plain and pointed testimonies, [notice it is not Ellen!]  bringing them to the word they have neglected to follow. Yet all the light is turned from by those who serve their own lusts, and they will not cease their course of sin, but continue to take pleasure in unrighteousness, in the face of the threatenings and vengeance of God against those who do such things. p. 148, Para. 2, [18OT].

One family in particular have needed all the benefits they could receive from the reform in diet. Yet these very ones were completely backslidden. Meat and butter were used quite freely, spices were not entirely discarded. … There should have been a specified time for each meal, and the food should have been prepared free from grease in a simple form; but pains should have been taken to have it nutritious, healthful, and inviting. p. 191, Para. 1, [18OT].

The case referred to above is not an isolated one. If it were, I would not introduce it here. When Satan takes possession of the mind, how soon the light and instruction that the Lord has graciously given, fade away, and have no force! How many excuses are framed, how many necessities made, which have no existence, to bear them up in their course of wrong, in setting aside the light and trampling it under foot! I wish to speak with assurance, that the greatest objection to health reform is, this people do not live it out, and they will gravely say they cannot live the health reform and preserve their strength. p. 193, Para. 1, [18OT].

We find in every such instance a good reason why they cannot live out the health reform. They do not live it out, and have never followed it strictly, therefore cannot be benefited by it. Some fall into the error, that because they leave meat they have no need to supply its place with the best of fruits and vegetables, prepared in their most natural state, free from grease and spices. If they will only skillfully arrange the bounties the Creator has surrounded them with, and with a clear conscience parents and children unitedly engage in the work, they would enjoy simple food, and would then be able to speak understandingly of health reform. p. 193, Para. 2, [18OT].

Wow! What a feast for a Thursday!
But, it gets better! Far better….

Here are the three statements from the counterfeit on the use of eggs for food which the White Estate would have us study. As you read, be careful how you think. Firstly, this is the smooth reasoning of Satan, not Ellen. Second, God warns us on page 180 of the 1858 Great Controversy, that Satan is constantly putting suggestions into our minds.

And what might these suggestions be? Well, in the particular case at hand, the counterfeit SOP is so designed by Satan to deceive you into thinking that the eating of eggs is ok… for you. Better err on God’s side not Satan’s. Don’t lust for forbidden pleasures of taste. Eternal life is at stake, for you, I have made my decision.

Those who live in new countries or in poverty-stricken districts, where fruits and nuts are scarce, should not be urged to exclude milk and eggs from their dietary. It is true that persons in full flesh and in whom the animal passions are strong need to avoid the use of stimulating foods. Especially in families of children who are given to sensual habits, eggs should not be used. But in the case of persons whose blood-making organs are feeble,–especially if other foods to supply the needed elements cannot be obtained,–milk and eggs should not be wholly discarded. Great care should be taken, however, to obtain milk from healthy cows, and eggs from healthy fowls, that are well fed and well cared for; and the eggs should be so cooked as to be most easily digested. {MH 320.1}
The diet reform should be progressive. As disease in animals increases, the use of milk and eggs will become more and more unsafe. {MH 320.2}

Concerning flesh meat, we should educate the people to let it alone. Its use is contrary to the best development of the physical, mental, and moral powers. And we should bear a clear testimony against the use of tea and coffee. It is also well to discard rich desserts. Milk, eggs, and butter should not be classed with flesh meat. In some cases the use of eggs is beneficial. The time has not come to say that the use of milk and eggs should be wholly discarded. There are poor families whose diet consists largely of bread and milk. They have little fruit and cannot afford to purchase the nut foods. In teaching health reform, as in all other gospel work, we are to meet the people where they are. Until we can teach them how to prepare health reform foods that are palatable, nourishing, and yet inexpensive, we are not at liberty to present the most advanced propositions regarding health reform diet. {7T 134.6}
Let the diet reform be progressive. Let the people be taught how to prepare food without the use of milk or butter. Tell them that the time will soon come when there will be no safety in using eggs, milk, cream, or butter, because disease in animals is increasing in proportion to the increase of wickedness among men. The time is near when, because of the iniquity of the fallen race, the whole animal creation will groan under the diseases that curse our earth. {7T 135.1}

Some of our people, while conscientiously abstaining from eating improper foods, neglect to supply themselves with the elements necessary for the sustenance of the body. Those who take an extreme view of health reform are in danger of preparing tasteless dishes, making them so insipid that they are not satisfying. Food should be prepared in such a way that it will be appetizing as well as nourishing. It should not be robbed of that which the system needs. I use some salt, and always have, because salt, instead of being deleterious, is actually essential for the blood. Vegetables should be made palatable with a little milk or cream, or something equivalent. {9T 161.4}
While warnings have been given regarding the dangers of disease through butter, and the evil of the free use of eggs by small children, yet we should not consider it a violation of principle to use eggs from hens that are well cared for and suitably fed. Eggs contain properties that are remedial agencies in counteracting certain poisons. {9T 162.1}
Some, in abstaining from milk, eggs, and butter, have failed to supply the system with proper nourishment, and as a consequence have become weak and unable to work. Thus health reform is brought into disrepute. The work that we have tried to build up solidly is confused with strange things that God has not required, and the energies of the church are crippled. But God will interfere to prevent the results of these too strenuous ideas. The gospel is to harmonize the sinful race. It is to bring the rich and poor together at the feet of Jesus. {9T 162.2}
The time will come when we may have to discard some of the articles of diet we now use, such as milk and cream and eggs; but it is not necessary to bring upon ourselves perplexity by premature and extreme restrictions. Wait until the circumstances demand it and the Lord prepares the way for it. {9T 162.3}

These three different sources have a wicked harmony between them. First, in claiming that Ellen is the author, second, in catering to the lusts of the people.

The gospel takes a man where he is. This is a very important point. Any journey to any place of any distance must begin where you are, because there is no other beginning. But it is also true that you can not go anywhere without taking a step.

There are far too many who would remain at the beginning, hence they will not be in Heaven because they refuse to travel, to take a step, to grow, to perfect their characters.

Tomorrow we’ll look at what God has to say on this and I think that if you have never read it before, you will be surprised.

The health reform is not well received by many because it cuts directly across their favorite path. It is the voice of God pointing out the habits of diet that are harmful to the fine nerves of the brain, which are so necessary for comprehension of spiritual things. Satan wars against your understanding of these things, for in understanding new thoughts are formed, which are parent to new actions taken, which lead to eternal life.

Here at we strive to point out the dividing line between the authentic Spirit of Prophecy and the counterfeit. This dividing line is comprised of several items. We have the death of James, the date, August 6, 1881, of his death, the take-over of Willie and his team, the immediate beginning of an unbroken stream of R&H articles published under Ellen’s name, the immediate commencement of the re-writing of all the previously published authentic Spirit of Prophecy, and some small miscellaneous items.

Another item of health reform has come to my attention and we will discuss it today. Though it centers around eating eggs for food, the arguments in favor of this practice are specious and a blending of the counterfeit SOP to make a case against the authentic Spirit of Prophecy. There is a great need of all to understand this dividing line between the two and to understand that the counterfeit one is the smooth lies of Satan designed to steal your eternal life.

Here is what God has to say through the authentic Spirit of Prophecy.

The Lord, in his wisdom, designed to bring his people into a position where they would separate from the world in spirit and practice, then their children would not so readily be led away into idolatry, and become tainted with the prevailing corruptions of this age.

This is an excellent example of the meaning of the term “out so far,” as shown in The Day-Star, which some murmurers and complainers that rashly deny the light of the Midnight Cry grow weary of, this separation from the world.

It is God’s purpose that believing parents and their children should stand forth as living representatives of Christ, candidates for everlasting life. All who are partakers of the divine nature will escape the corruption that is in the world through lust. It is impossible for those who indulge the gratification of appetite to attain to Christian perfection.

Some people just hate these absolute phrases, yet, it is God that reaches out to them through the authentic Spirit of Prophecy to touch their idols, showing them the deception they are under in believing that he will accept them in their sin, as opposed to from their sin.

You cannot arouse the moral sensibilities of your children while you are not careful in the selection of their food. The tables that parents usually prepare for their children are a snare to them. The diet is not simple, and it is not prepared in a healthful manner. The food is frequently rich and fever-producing, having a tendency to irritate and excite the tender organs of the stomach. The animal passions are strengthened, while the moral and intellectual are weakened. The lower order of passions bears sway, while the moral and intellectual are servant to the baser passions. You should study to prepare a simple yet nutritious diet. Rich cakes, rich pies, prepared with spices, of any kind, and flesh-meats, are not the most healthful and nourishing diet. Eggs should not be placed upon your table. They are an injury to your children.

The last two sentences immediately above are the focus of the White Estate comments. They would have you believe that this testimony is solely for the recipient, but, as we will discover, this is not the truth.

Fruits and grains, prepared in the most simple form, are the most healthful, and will impart the greatest amount of nourishment, and, at the same time, the intellect will be unimpaired. p. 68, Para. 1, [18OT].

This last sentence is in perfect harmony with that said in No. 17, page 192.
We will continue this discussion tomorrow.

Corn is an interesting grain. Tis that time of year when it is a very cheap food of high quality, especially if you can get real organic. When I think of corn, I usually think of “corn and wine” and oil.

Until I come and take you away to
a land like your own land,
a land of corn and wine,
a land of bread and vineyards,
a land of oil olive and of honey,
that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. 2 Kings 18:32

An interesting parallelism in this verse. Corn is an important grain. Often corn is taken to mean wheat, or something similar. I like the taste of Mexican tamales, specifically the Masa that makes up the body of the tamales.

So I began doing some research on Masa to learn something of it, how to cook it, &c. I learned something interesting. Corn, as it comes from the plant, is not the best of foods. It needs to go through a process called nixtamalization which can be studied on this Wikipedia page.

It is basically a chemical process of using an alkaline solution, usually limewater, to break down the corn into the better food it can be. But here is what I noticed in my research, the writers almost uniformly approach this subject as something developed by early native peoples.

However, we know this to be false. Being a believer in the Bible and God’s providence in all things, we know that Noah lived 950 years, that’s 350 past the flood. Two points on this. God instructed Noah in the building of the Ark, and I am quite sure he also gave him instruction in how to live after the flood, things about the climate were very different than before the flood. Secondly, Noah was smart. It takes some chemistry to understand what needs to happen to corn to make it into a better food. Two reasons I am sure this information came from God.

Think about it. This knowledge had to have been passed down over the years to the children and this is the source of the various “native” people of various lands all over the world. We have to think constantly in terms of God’s hand in the affairs of man to combat this constant pressure from Satan’s wiles.

This is a core reason for Christian education at home, separate from the world, read Satan here, and it’s teaching that is so destructive to faith.

Next time you pick up an ear of corn… and pause… and someone asks you if something is wrong, tell them, “No, everything is just fine, God is in control.”

Friday April 26, 2013

Ending yesterday’s post, we mentioned that there were some items that once mentioned were never brought up again. It appears that the Apocrypha is in this same class.

Beginning with Ellen’s first vision, published in The Day-Star, we have a couple of sentences that are not in Early Writings. They tell us something about the people who rashly deny the light of the Midnight Cry and fall off the path.

It was just as impossible for them to get on the path again and go to the City, as all the wicked world which God had rejected. They fell all the way along the path one after another, until* we heard the voice of God like many waters,** which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming.”

* The actual end of the removed material.
** The special resurrection occurs at this point, page 205, 1858 Great Controversy, thus making “the living saints, 144,000 in number.”

Next we have the 1849 Broadside. This vision has two items that has never been published again, before James’ death. The first is seven sentences that nine (9) times define God as the true author of the authentic Spirit of Prophecy. They were republished, after Ellen’s death, in 1SM page 40. The second is two sentences about the angels having a golden card, used for access to the gates of the City. To my knowledge this information was only published twice more before James’ death.

There are two items mentioned in the 1854 Supplement to the 1851 CEV that suffer the same status. The first is gospel order and under that is the holy kiss. Never published again is the holy kiss, with gospel order being published after James’ death in the counterfeit SOP.

Please do not consider this a complete list. These are just the items that have come to mind for this post. There are doubtless a host more, especially considering the List of Lies category, on the right of the blog. Satan’s efforts to cover up the truth for the last days is severe. Truths that the 144,000 will need to make it through to the end, truths that the GCSDA church has helped to cover up and hide from the saints, are hidden by ignoring.

And one more.

No. 30, the last of the authentic Spirit of Prophecy Testimonies, published in 1881, pages 151 to 178, titled Simplicity of Dress, is all about dress reform. Largely speaking, dress reform is focused on the females. It’s just a fact of life. Satan has used and is using, unconverted women to his advantage against Christ.

Here are some passages from the mentioned section. It details the status of items seemingly left to trail in the dust.

Perhaps no question has ever come up among us which has caused such a development of character as has the dress reform. p. 162, Para. 3, [30OT].

    I had no burden of testimony on the subject of dress. I made no reference to it in any way, either to advocate or to condemn. It was the Lord’s purpose to prove his professed people, and reveal the motives of their hearts. At the camp-meetings, I seldom had anything to say upon the subject. I avoided all questions, and answered no letters. p. 164, Para. 2, [30OT].

And it is now shown that they needed the restriction which the reform dress imposed. p. 167, Para. 1, [30OT].

The fact that God allowed the testimony on dress reform to become silent is mute testimony to the other items listed above, and still more, also allowed to become silent.

If God says something one time that should be enough. The fact that it is repeated, even once more should greatly increase our attention. It is our responsibility to cherish the light God has given. We cherish this light from God by giving it the prime spot at our desk.

It is not for lack of knowledge that God’s people are now perishing. They will not be condemned because they do not know the way, the truth, and the life. The truth that has reached their understanding, the light which has shone on the soul, that has not been cherished, and which they have neglected, or refused to be led by, will condemn them. p. 15, Para. 2, [16OT].

    It should be the first business of your life to seek the kingdom of Heaven and the righteousness of God; then you have the promise that all things shall be added. Here is where you have failed in your family. Had you been agonizing, that you and yours might enter in at the strait gate, you would have earnestly gathered every ray of light that the Lord has permitted to shine upon your pathway, and would have cherished and walked in it. You have not regarded the light that has been graciously given you. You have had a spirit of rising up against the light the Lord has given upon health reform. You have seen no importance in it, why you should receive it. You have not felt willing to restrict your appetite. You could not see the wisdom of God in giving light in regard to the restriction of appetite. All that you could discern was the inconvenience attending the denial of the taste. The Lord has let his light shine upon us in these last days, that the gloom and darkness which have been gathering in past generations, because of sinful indulgences, might be dispelled in some degree, and the train of evils which have been the result of intemperate eating and drinking to gratify appetite, might be lessened. p. 67, Para. 1, [18OT].

And because the church has not cherished the light given, it has only been mentioned once, in some cases, and allowed to fall silent.

Grasp that light and hang on to it!

With all our talk about the hidden treasure, the language of Heaven, and Isaiah 28:12, the rest and the refreshing that God has provided for his people to give them power to get through to the voice of the Father, let’s be sure to remember the part we have to do.

Therefore in order for the people of God to be in an acceptable state with him, where they can glorify God in their bodies and spirits which are his, they must, with interest and zeal, deny themselves, deny the gratification of their appetites, and exercise temperance in all things. Then may they comprehend the truth in its beauty and clearness, and carry it out in their lives, and by a judicious, wise, straight forward course, give the enemies of our faith no occasion to reproach the cause of truth. God requires all who believe the truth to make special, persevering efforts to place themselves in the best possible conditions of bodily health, for a solemn and important work is before us. Health of body and mind is required for this work and is as necessary for a healthy religious experience, and to, advance in the Christian life, and progress in holiness, as the hand or foot is necessary to the human body. This great work God requires of his people, to cleanse themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of the Lord. All those who are indifferent and excuse themselves from engaging in this work, and leave the work which God requires them to do for the Lord to do for them, will be found wanting when the meek of the earth, who hath wrought his judgments, are hid in the day of the Lord’s anger; p. 66, Para. 2, [13OT].

I was shown that if God’s people, without making efforts on their part, wait for the refreshing to come upon them and remove there wrongs and correct their errors, and depend upon that to cleanse them from filthiness of the flesh and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry of the third angel, they will be found wanting. The refreshing or power of God, comes only on those who have prepared themselves for it by doing the work which God bids them, namely, to cleanse themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. In some respects, I was shown, my husband’s case is similar to those waiting for the refreshing. If he should wait for the power of God to come upon his body and to feel that he was made whole before he made efforts, or acted in accordance with his faith, saying, When the Lord heals me I will believe and do this or that, he might continue to wait, and would realize no change; for the fulfillment of God’s promise is only realized by those who believe and work in accordance with their faith. I saw that he must believe God’s word, that his promises are for him to claim, and they will never, no never, fail. He should walk out by faith, relying upon the evidences that God has been pleased to give, and act toward the point of being a well man as much as possible. Said the angel, “God will sustain him. His faith must be made perfect by works; for faith alone is dead. It must be sustained by works. A living faith is always manifested by works.” p. 67, Para. 1, [13OT].

From this passage God is teaching us that the refreshing is the power of God. He has already taught us from Isaiah 28:11&12, that this is the rest and another tongue, a stammering one at that; and 33:19 when speaking of that stammering tongue, in the margin calls it, ridiculous.

It appears that God is trying to communicate that his word, in parables and dark sayings, is the power of God, that sustains his people, gives them refreshing, which prepares them for the hour of temptation in the time of trouble such as never was, the time of Jacob’s trouble.

We do not know how all that works, it is just our place to be obedient to what God tells us. In our subject passage for today, he is telling us that we have a work to do. A work of self-purification. This process is illustrated in the real life event of James’ sickness. A good way to learn.

A lot of people wonder about just what present truth really is. It’s very simple. Perhaps that is the ‘problem’ for so many, it’s too simple.

Present truth was set by the true pioneers, defined as those who have been in all the messages, and are firm in all the present truth. These are all dead now, what we have are their published writings, that is all. That is enough.

There are three passages that bear on the point, I’ll share them with you and you can decide.

    1.) I also saw that the shepherds should consult those in whom they have reason to have confidence, those who have been in all the messages, and are firm in all the present truth, before they advocate any new point of importance, which they may think the Bible sustains. Then the shepherds will be perfectly united, and the union of the shepherds will be felt by the church. Such a course I saw would prevent unhappy divisions, and then there would be no danger of the precious flock being divided, and the sheep scattered, without a shepherd. The Present Truth, No. 11, page 86.

    2.) “So, I saw, that those who had no experience in the first and second angels’ messages must receive them from those who had an experience, and followed down through the messages. As JESUS was crucified, so I saw that these messages have been crucified. And as the disciples declared that there was salvation in no other name under heaven, given among men; so, also, should the servants of GOD faithfully and fearlessly declare that those who embrace but a part of the truths connected with the third message must gladly embrace the first, second and third messages as GOD has given them, or have no part nor lot in the matter.” p. 75, Para. 1, [GC58].

    3.) I was shown like this. The truth once got out new, will stand; for it is the truth for the last days, and it will live, and less need to be said upon the truth after it is out. Supplement to CEV, page 14.

By these passages I understand that it is the true pioneers of this Advent faith that set present truth for the last days, to the very end. The passage of time has no bearing on this truth. Present truth does not change.

Of the true pioneers, I believe James to be in the fore. God told him that he must “write, write, write.”

 “On his return, my husband was impressed that it was his duty to write and publish the present truth. He was greatly encouraged and blessed as he decided thus to do. But again he would be in doubt and perplexity as he was penniless. There were those who had means, but they chose to keep it. He at length gave up in discouragement, and decided to look for a field of grass to mow. As he left the house, a burden was rolled upon me, and I fainted. Prayer was offered for me, and I was blessed, and taken off in vision. I saw that the Lord had blessed and strengthened my husband to labor in the field one year before; that he had made a right disposition of the means he there earned; and that he would have a hundred fold in this life, and, if faithful, a rich reward in the kingdom of God; but that the Lord would not now give him strength to labor in the field, for he had another work for him; that if he ventured into the field he would be cut down by sickness; but that he must write, write, write, and walk out by faith. He immediately commenced to write, and when he came to some difficult passage we would call upon the Lord to give us the true meaning of his word. 1880 Life Sketches, page 260.

James has been much discounted in the church. Many can see no reason for picking up a book with his name attached. Yet, he, with Ellen, together, obtained the true meaning of God’s word. James then wrote it out.
To my knowledge, there is no other true pioneer who had such a commission from God.

Now you decide.

More on health.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.  Psalms 42:11
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.  Psalms 43:5

That thy   way may be known upon earth,
thy saving health among all nations.  Psalms 67:2

the tongue of the wise is health.  Proverbs 12:18

a faithful ambassador is health.  Proverbs 13:17

It is amazing to see all the ways God is rightly dividing his word.

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.  Proverbs 16:24
the words of the pure are pleasant words.  Proverbs 15:26

Then shall thy light break forth as the morning,
and thine health shall spring forth speedily:
and thy righteousness shall go before thee;
the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.  Isaiah 58:8

We looked for peace, but no good came; and
for a time of health, and behold trouble!  Jeremiah 8:15

For I will restore health unto thee,
and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD;
because they called thee an Outcast, saying,
This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.  Jeremiah 30:17

I will bring it health and cure, and
I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.  Jeremiah 33:6

Paul had an interesting experience, and from that we have instruction.

Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.  Acts 27:34-35
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  2 Timothy 2:15

meat = bread, breaking bread = rightly dividing

And an extra, just something we found.

Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.  Isaiah 7:15
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.  Hebrews 5:14

Butter and honey are actually strong meat.
This is in total agreement with No. 11, page 46. Check it out.
