Sabbath September 21, 2013

The Bible has this definite definition for the study of God’s word, spiritual things spiritually understood. We are going to go through some of the texts in a somewhat different manner than usual. Our purpose for this Sabbath day is to provide you with the specific definitions you need to prove God’s methods of Bible study are correct.

We will be focusing primarily on 1 Corinthians 1:17 – 3:3.

to preach the gospel = the cross of Christ 1:17

the preaching of the cross = the power of God.1:18

the understanding of the prudent = nothing. 1:19

the wisdom of this world = foolish 1:20

the foolishness of preaching = to preach the gospel 1:21

preaching Christ crucified = to the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness 1:23

preaching Christ crucified = Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 1:24

the foolishness of God = the weakness of God = preaching Christ crucified 1:25

the foolish things of the world = the weak things of the world = preaching Christ crucified 1:27

base things of the world = things which are despised = things which are not = preaching Christ crucified 1:28

Christ Jesus = wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 1:30

the testimony of God = preaching Christ crucified 2:1

Jesus Christ, and him crucified = to preach the gospel 2:2

in demonstration of the Spirit and of power = preaching Christ crucified 2:4

the power of God = preaching Christ crucified 2:5

wisdom = preaching Christ crucified; not the wisdom of this world 2:6

the wisdom of God in a mystery = the hidden wisdom 2:7

the deep things of God = preaching Christ crucified 2:10

the things = the deep things of God 2:12

things = which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 2:13

the things of the Spirit of God = foolishness unto man and spiritually discerned. 2:14

the mind of Christ = the deep things of God 2:16

carnal = babes in Christ. 3:1

milk = surface meaning of the Bible; meat = the deep things of God 3:2

carnal = envying, and strife, and divisions, and walking as men of the world 1 Corinthians 3:3

It would be in your best interests to read this portion of scripture and prove this list of definitions….

As we contemplate the probable near future… this portion from No. 8 looks worthy of a review. Too many times we get in a rut and forget to broaden our reading to full scope of what we have available. This reads a little differently, but is in perfect harmony with the 1858 Great Controversy as well as the rest of the Spirit of Prophecy.

The Future. p. 112, Para. 3, [8OT].
At the transfiguration Jesus was glorified by his Father. We hear him say, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.” Thus before his betrayal and crucifixion he was strengthened for his last dreadful sufferings. p. 112, Para. 4, [8OT].

As the members of the body of Christ approach the period of their last conflict, “the time of Jacob’s trouble,” they will grow up into Christ, and will partake largely of his Spirit. As the third message swells to a loud cry, and as great power and glory attends the closing work, the faithful people of God will partake of that glory. It is the latter rain which revives and strengthens them to pass through the time of trouble. Their faces [minds] will shine [teach God’s Word] with the glory of that light [the Word] which attends the third angel. p. 112, Para. 5, [8OT].

I saw that God would in a wonderful manner preserve his people through the time of trouble. As Jesus poured out his soul in agony in the garden, they will earnestly cry and agonize with him day and night for deliverance. The decree will go forth that they must disregard the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and honor the first day, or lose their lives; but they will not yield, and trample under their feet the Sabbath of the Lord, and honor an institution of Papacy. Satan’s host, and wicked men, will surround them, and exult over them, because there will seem to be no way of escape for them. But in the midst of their revelry and triumph, there is peal upon peal of the loudest thunder. The heavens have gathered blackness, and are only illuminated by the blazing light and terrible glory from Heaven, as God utters his voice from his holy habitation. p. 112, Para. 6, [8OT].

Here is the special resurrection of only the righteous saints that have “died in faith under the third angel’s message, keeping the Sabbath.” 1858 Great Controversy, page 205.

The foundations of the earth shake, buildings totter and fall with a terrible crash. The sea boils like a pot, and the whole earth is in terrible commotion. The captivity of the righteous is turned, and with sweet and solemn whisperings they say to each other, “We are delivered. It is the voice of God.” With solemn awe they listen to the words of the voice. The wicked hear, but understand not the words of the voice of God. They fear and tremble, while the saints rejoice. Satan and his angels, and wicked men, who had been exulting that the people of God were in their power, that they might destroy them from off the earth, witness the glory conferred upon those who have honored the holy law of God. They behold the faces of the righteous lighted up, and reflecting the image of Jesus. Those who were so eager to destroy the saints, could not endure the glory resting upon the delivered ones, and they fell like dead men to the earth. Satan and evil angels fled from the presence of the saints glorified. Their power to annoy them was gone forever. p. 113, Para. 1, [8OT].

Remember that the image of Jesus can only be acquired this side of the close of probation. We must get ready now!

That man might not lose the blessed results of benevolence, our Redeemer formed the plan of enlisting him as his co-worker.

Being a co-worker is not the same as a co-redeemer, as some claim against those who promote the Bible position of faith and works.

By a chain of circumstances which would call forth his charities, he brings man under the best means of cultivating benevolence, and keeps him habitually giving to help the poor, and to advance his cause. He sends his poor as the representatives of himself. A ruined world is drawing forth from us by their necessities talents of means and of influence to present to them the truth [the Word], of which they are in perishing need.

A pure chain of texts shows exactly what it means “to present to them the truth.”

1.) Psalms 119:105 where God defines his word as a lamp and a light. The other words tell what they are used for.

2.) In Genesis 5:17 God adds the word burning to lamp, thus we have God’s word as both a burning and a lamp.

3.) Back to Psalms 119:135, here God defines to shine means to teach.

4.) John 17:17 is the definition of truth. God says it is his word.

5.) John 5:35 is where Christ was discussing John the Baptist. Christ identified John as a burning and a shining light.

We know that John the Baptist was a representative of the 144,000, the saints who are living in the end of Matthew 24:14.

John was a representative of the people of God in the last days, to whom God has committed important and solemn truths. Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2, page 44.

Now we can say, in order “to present to them the truth” God people must be like John the Baptist who, Christ says, was God’s word teaching God’s word. That is the spiritual definition of “a burning and a shining light” as taught by God.

And as we heed these calls, by labor and acts of benevolence, [faith and works] we are assimilated into the image of him [the Word] who for our sakes became poor. In bestowing, we bless others, and thus accumulate the true riches. p. 74, Para. 1, [24OT].

The moral darkness of a ruined world pleads to Christian men and women to put forth individual effort, to give of their means, and of their influence, that they may be assimilated into the image of Him [the Word] who, though he possessed infinite riches, yet for our sakes became poor. The Spirit of God cannot abide with those to whom he has sent the message of his truth [the Word], who need to be urged before they can have any sense of their duty to be co-workers with Christ. The apostle enforces the duty of giving from higher grounds than merely human sympathy, because the feelings are moved. He enforces the principle that we should labor unselfishly with an eye single to the glory of God. p. 88, Para. 2, [24OT].

Perfecting your character is a work every bit of which is glorifying God. It is a work of faith and works together, and a cleaning of ourselves by taking a shower, as it were, in the living water of the Word. Following the example of Christ in all things.

Now comes clear the imagery of Paul as he identifies this very process.

That he might sanctify and cleanse it [the church] with the washing of water by the word, Ephesians 5:26

How amazing!!! So much comes clear as we correctly understand the Word and God’s definitions for that Word.

I never before had any understanding of how so many different people could reflect the image of Christ, perfectly. The only idea I had was that of a mirror and the image in the mirror. But this is not perfection. I was shrouded in darkness, only seeing things physically.

We must all come to the light, the Word. Our minds must be renewed by thinking new thoughts; thoughts that are guided by the Master, our Creator, Jesus Christ, the Word. As thought is parent to act, so new thoughts parent new acts, acts of obedience, if mixed with faith and works.

The Master saw that you needed a work of fitness for his heavenly kingdom. He did not leave you in the furnace for the fire of affliction to consume. As a refiner and purifier of silver, he kept his eye upon you, watching the process of purification until he should discern his image [the Word] reflected in you. p. 92, Para. 2, [17OT].

Purification is a removal of the dross. The dross is worldly thoughts that parent worldly acts. The measure of this process is the measure of how many words a man loves, even loves to have enter his brain. These good words come in like clean water to flush a toilet. Sorry about that imagery, but can sin really be any less to a holy God?

Bro. —- came up from his sickness; but how little did he or his family feel humbled under the hand of God. The work of the Spirit of God [the Word], and wisdom from him [the Word], are not manifested that we may be happy and satisfied with ourselves, but that our souls may be renewed in knowledge [the Word] and true holiness. How much better would it have been for Bro. —- if his affliction had prompted to faithful searching of heart, to discover the imperfections in his character, that he might put them away, and with humble spirit come forth from the furnace as gold purified, reflecting the image of Christ [the Word]. p. 34, Para. 1, [21OT].

Our freedom of choice is very, very high on the list. Of all the saints that will finally be saved and walk the streets of the City, not one will be forced to be there, all, every one, will be there because they made a clear choice to be there. Now, many want to be there, they claim to have made a choice, a decision, to be there, but they will not conform their lives to the confines of the strait and narrow path. They are trying to have both worlds. They have a divided heart.

Bro. S— could have accomplished good if he had, years ago, given all for Christ. He has not been sanctified through the truth. His heart has not been right with God [the Word]. His talent he has hid in the earth [worldly work]. What will he say who has put his talents to a wrong use when the Master shall require him to give account of his stewardship. Bro.— has not been an honor to the cause of God. It is dangerous to contend with the providence of God, and to be dissatisfied with almost everything, as though there had been a special arrangement of circumstances to tempt and destroy. The work of pruning and purifying, to fit us for Heaven, is a great work, and will cost us a great deal of suffering and trial, because our will is not subjected to the will of Christ [as made plain in the Word]. We must go through the furnace till the fires have consumed the dross, and we are purified, and reflect the divine image [the Word]. Those who follow their inclinations and are governed by appearances, are not good judges of what God is doing. They are filled with discontent. They see failure where there is indeed triumph, a great loss where there is gain; and, like Jacob, they have been ready to exclaim, “All these things are against me,” when the very things whereof they complained were all working together for their good. p. 97, Para. 1, [21OT].

We need to trust what God is doing. It would be good to express such trust vocally by praising God out loud (does not have to be shouting, but may be if you are not making yourself a spectacle to the wicked, as this is a type of prayer that might be best done in your secret closet) at least as loud as you have murmured and complained in the past!

The Word is full of examples of praising God. This should be a great example of the Word coming in to your mind, changing your thinking, changing your acts.

The Spirit of Prophecy is in a unique position for God’s people of the last days. It would seem best expressed in these words from No. 20, page 44.

The Lord deigns to warn you, to reprove, to counsel, through the testimonies given, and to impress your minds with the importance of the truth of his word. The written testimonies are not to give new light; but to impress with vividness upon the heart the truths of inspiration already revealed.

Anything God does for his people should be cherished as very important. Think about it. This is our Creator doing something to help us get to Heaven. Anyone, who in any way, tries to lower the Spirit of Prophecy, proves to all, his great spiritual darkness and great danger attends.

These next two passages also contain the word image, which I had searched on for this part of studying about God’s word.

Those who do not really wish to know themselves, will pass off the reproofs and warnings to others, and will not discern that their own cases are met, and their errors and dangers pointed out. Earthly and selfish motives blind the [shades of Mark 4:10-11] mind, and so operate upon the soul that it cannot [can not understand spiritual definitions] be renewed in the divine image [the Word]. All who do not, by their own perverse natures, resist His will, [the will of God, John 6:39] will not be left in darkness, [being left in darkness is not having light, which is God’s word] but will be renewed in knowledge [this is the entrance of Word(s)] and true holiness, and even glory in the cross of Christ [note that this defined in 1 Corinthians 17 & 18, it is the power of God]. p. 165, Para. 2, [20OT].

And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. John 6:39

It seems that the word it would apply to God’s church as they are the only ones of which Christ “should lose nothing.”

The Lord, by close and pointed truths for these last days, is cleaving out a people from the world, and purifying them unto himself. Pride and unhealthful fashions, the love of display, the love of approbation, all must be left with the world, if we would be renewed in knowledge after the image of Him [the Word] who created us. “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared unto all men, teaching us, that denying ungodliness, and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world, looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” p. 73, Para. 1, [21OT].

This re-new-ing is about being changed, a re-making of the man. We know it better as the new birth. I would encourage you to go back and read about Nicodemus. John, chapter 3. And let’s not forget John 6:63, “the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

Monday September 16, 2013

Notice the language employed to make the point. We can easily apply the spiritual meaning of these words to get a more in-depth picture of the problem.

I was shown in the case of sister Hannah More that the neglect of her was the neglect of Jesus [the Word] in her person. Had the Son of God [the Word] come in the humble, unpretending manner in which he journeyed from place to place when he was upon earth, he would have met with no better reception. It is the deep principle of love that dwelt in the bosom of the humble man of Calvary, that is needed. Had the church lived in the light [the Word], they would have appreciated this humble missionary whose whole being was aglow to be engaged in her Master’s service. Her very earnest interest was misconstrued. Her externals were not just such as would meet the approval of the eye of taste and fashion; for familiarity with strict economy and poverty had left its impress upon her apparel. But the hard-earned means had been exhausted as fast as earned to benefit others; to get light [the Word] to those whom she hoped to lead to the cross [the Word] of truth. Even the professed church of Christ [the Word], with their exalted privileges and high professions, discerned not the image of Christ [the Word], in this self-denying child of God [the Word], because they were so far removed from Christ [the Word] themselves that they reflected not his image [the Word].

Evidently Hannah More had the Word in her, hence, she reflected Christ’s image. Others who professed to be Christians were not studying their Bible, were not growing from strength to strength and for this reason could not discern God’s Word in Hannah. Insert 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 here as a reminder of the difference between the milk and meat is and how to tell.

The Testimony reads, “because they were so far removed from Christ.” This is no different than saying “they were so far removed from studying their Bible.”

They judged by the external appearance, and took not special pains to discern the inward adorning [the Word?]. Here was a woman whose resources of knowledge and genuine experience in the mysteries of godliness [the Word] exceeded those of any one residing at Battle Creek, and whose manner of address to youth and children was pleasing, instructive, and salutary. She was not harsh, but correct and sympathetic, and would have proved one of the most useful laborers in the field, to fill positions as an instructor of the youth, and an intelligent, useful companion and counselor to mother. She could reach hearts by her earnest, matter-of-fact presentation of incidents in her religious life which she had devoted to the service of her Redeemer [the Word]. Had the church emerged from darkness and deception into the clear light [the Word], their hearts would have been drawn out after the lonely stranger. Her prayers, her tears, her distress to see no way of usefulness open to her, have gone up to Heaven. God has heard. Talents and help the Lord offered to his people, but they were rich and increased with goods, and had need of nothing. They turned from, and rejected a most precious blessing of which they will yet feel the need. Had Elder —– stood in the clear light [the Word], of God, imbued with his Spirit [the Word], when this servant of Jesus [the Word], lonely, homeless, and thirsting for a work to do for her Master [the Word], was brought to his notice, spirit [the Word], would have answered to spirit [the Word], as face answereth to face in a mirror, and his heart would have been drawn out after this disciple of Christ, and he would have understood her. Thus also with the church. They had been in such spiritual blindness they had lost the sound of the voice of the true Shepherd [the Word], and were following the voice of a stranger, who was leading them from the fold of Christ [the Word]. p. 35, Para. 1, [16OT].

Interjecting the Word in brackets may not be exactly correct in each instance, but, it definitely makes a strong point about our relationship with that Word. Very strong.

Sunday September 15, 2013

There are two items at play here, first, we have those who bear Christ’s image. We think this image is God’s word, which we bear to the world.

Second, health reform brought to the fore.

A living sacrifice God calls for. The body, he tells us, is
the temple of the Holy Ghost,
the habitation of his Spirit,

In passing, an interesting parallel with peg words and definitions.

and he requires every one who bears his image [the Word] to take care of their bodies for the purpose of his service and his glory. “Ye are not your own,” saith the inspired apostle, “ye are bought with a price,” wherefore “glorify God in your bodies and spirits which are God’s.” In order to do this, add to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience. It is duty to know how to preserve the body in the very best condition of health, and it is a sacred duty to live up to the light [the Word] God has graciously given. If we close our eyes to the light [the Word] for fear we shall see our wrongs, which we are unwilling to forsake, our sins are not lessened but increased. If light [the Word] is turned from in one case it will be disregarded in another. It is just as much sin to violate the laws of our being as to break one of the ten commandments, for we cannot do this without breaking God’s law. We cannot love the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, while we are loving our appetites, our tastes, a great deal better than we love the Lord. We are daily lessening our strength to glorify God, when he requires all our strength, all our mind. Lessening our hold of life by our wrong habits, and yet profess to be Christ’s followers, preparing for the finishing touch of immortality. p. 59, Para. 2, [15OT].

Perfection, what can it be? Is it not measured by the Word? the Christ? Obedience in faith to the Word once delivered to the saints. It’s the strait and narrow way.

Sabbath September 14, 2013

As we study this image of Christ (the Word), which image we want to reflect, there are some thoughts from the Testimonies to be added to the mix. Remember, these are only excerpts; go and read in context if you feel it necessary.

There is one angel who always leads, first touches the harp, strikes the note, then all join in the rich, perfect music of heaven. It cannot be described. It was melody, heavenly, divine, while from every countenance beamed the image of Jesus, which shone with glory unspeakable. p. 31, Para. 4, [3OT].

The dreadful state of our nation calls for deep humility on the part of God’s people. The one all-important inquiry which should now engross the mind of every one is, Am I prepared for the day to God? Can I stand the trying test before me? p. 1, Para. 1, [9OT].

I place the above passage here to call your attention to the fact that, even though written in the midst of the Civil War, 1863, one hundred and fifty years ago, it is every bit applicable to God’s people today, … as our nation seeks another killing field….

I saw that God was purifying and proving his people. He will refine them as gold, until his image is reflected in them, and the dross consumed. p. 1, Para. 2, [9OT].

I was shown that God’s people dwell too much under a cloud. It is not the will of God for his people to live in unbelief. Jesus is light [the Word], and in him [the Word] is no darkness at all. His children are the children of light [the Word]. They are renewed in his image [the Word], and called out of darkness into his marvelous light [the Word]. He is the light [the Word] of the world, and they that follow him are the light [the Word] of the world. They shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light [the Word] of life. The more closely the people of God strive to imitate Christ [the Word], the more perseveringly will they be pursued by the enemy. But their nearness to Christ [the Word] strengthens them to resist the efforts of our wily foe to draw them from Christ [the Word]. p. 148, Para. 1, [10OT].

I have now begun to place the singular definition in brackets, the Word. This is very impressive to me, I don’t know about you, but, give this some serious thought. We know Christ is the Word, John 1:1-5. If that definition works elsewhere, it works here. If it works here, what meanth it?

Could we say that this study of God’s words, using his definitions for his words, is actually the path, the way, to properly reflecting his image? when mixed with faith and obedience. It looks right to me.

I find the above passage astounding! Absolutely astounding!!

Keep the eye steadily fixed upon Christ [the Word], upon the divine image [the Word]. Imitate his spotless life [the Word], and with him [the Word], you will be partaker of his glory and inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. p. 38, Para. 2, [15OT].

The above two passages, from No. 10 and No. 15, illustrate this beautiful harmony existing between the authentic Spirit of Prophecy and the Bible. Little wonder, the author is the same.

Many profess to be on the Lord’s side, but they are not; the weight of all their actions is on Satan’s side. By what means shall we determine whose side we are on? who has the heart? With whom are our thoughts? Upon whom do we love to converse? Who has our warmest affections, and our best energies? If we are on the Lord’s side, our thoughts are of him. We have no friendship with the world; we have consecrated all that we have and are, to him. We long to bear his image [the Word], breathe his Spirit [the Word], do his [the Word] will, and please him [the Word] in all things. p. 84, Para. 1, [17OT].

It appears possible that reflecting Christ’s image is the same as being sealed, or very close. Humm…., just checked on something. The Present Truth, No. 5, page 41 global paging. In the right column Ellen was shown that Bro. Rhodes “bore the image of Jesus.” That “as soon as would come out of that dark place, and stand on all the present truth” the Angel would “enroll his name.” Very interesting….

This story is kind’a like an old hat. It fits well, it’s comfortable, yeah, yeah, we’ve heard this all before, let’s get on with the point. For SDAs especially is this true. They think themselves to be “rich in spiritual discernment, when they are blind, poor, and wretched,” No. 23, page 12.

Every one must be born again.

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. John 3:1-7

What is spirit?

The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

And again.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:1-5

I understand, this is scary stuff for most SDAs. Mostly because we were taught to be afraid of the Spirit, in all forms. I know, I was one for fifty years, fourth generation, on the church board, all that. I understand what’s happening in your mind right now. Yet, you—must be born again.

You want to be born again? You must be born of the Spirit; meaning that you must be born of the words that Christ speaks; which words are spirit and life for all men. These words are Christ, in Spirit. These words are the flesh of Christ. We eat his flesh and drink his blood that we, through his words that we have eaten, might have light from Christ for our life.

I’m using other words to force other nerve paths in our brains. This forces us to see Christ’s words differently than before. This is the meat of God’s word, the Bible. It is not the surface meaning of Christ’s words. Nicodemus asked a surface question about a man going back into the womb in order to be born again. This is about listening to God’s definitions of his own words to understand what he meant when he said Spirit, Word, Life.

Being born again is choosing to believe God’s definitions of his words, or, having faith in them to the point you are acting upon those definitions as fact. This causes you to study more and more of his words, learning more and more of this language of Heaven, the songs of the angels, the songs of deliverance from Satan’s power, the meat of God’s words.

The milk is still there. Every word of the milk and meat is pure.

My doctrine is pure, Job 11:4

My prayer is pure. Job 16:17

The commandment of the LORD is pure, Psalms 19:8

Every word of God is pure: Proverbs 30:5

And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 1 John 3:3

If the milk were not pure we could not grow into the meat. But of course, that is a big part of the problem with the SDA church, their milk is spoiled, rotten, “full of vomit and filthiness.” They can not grow from that milk. They must get the pure milk of the KJV Bible and then they can grow naturally into the meat.

In the milk of the word God makes plain, on the surface, his definitions. If this were not so it would be next to impossible for any to be saved. Milk is good and proper food for babies. But if the baby does not gain weight, does not grow, something is wrong! Alarms should be ringing!!

When a baby is born it is weighed. Then it is weighed again… often. If there is a miss in growth, or weight on the chart, immediately a bell rings! Now we weigh that baby every day! We want to know what is happening.

Most will not grow into the meat. Their milk sours and they, like the pig, returns to their slop.

For the true people of God, they are on that strait and narrow path, all the way to the City. Learning, growing, eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ, God’s words spiritually discerned.

I got to looking at Nehemiah 10:28 because it had words in it that I was searching. Then I got to reading the story before that and made some interesting discoveries. You will remember that both Ezra and Nehemiah led out in the reform work. Much was accomplished as we shall see. Keep in mind the words we are studying using God’s definitions.

And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them. Nehemiah 9:15

From this verse we can quickly see that the bread from Heaven is manna, but spiritually it is Christ. He said so in John 6:48. The water for their thirst had to be living, because it too came from Christ. The earliest reference to this is Deuteronomy 32:4 “ He is the Rock,” and is the first time the word is capitalized.

Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. Nehemiah 9:20

In repeating the story about the bread and water, this verse adds just who it was that did the instruction. It was the Holy Spirit.

Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. Nehemiah 9:26

It is a fearful thing to be slaying God’s prophets! And rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, 1 Samuel15:23.

But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies; Nehemiah 9:28

The word rest really caught my attention here! The Day-Star comes to mind, and the Advent people traveling the strait and narrow path to the City. God tells us this about those who have “had rest” and then rejected it.

On this path the Advent people were traveling to the City, which was at the farther end of the path. They had a bright light set up behind them at the first end of the path, which an angel told me was the Midnight Cry. This light shone all along the path and gave light for their feet so they might not stumble. And if they kept their eyes fixed on Jesus, who was just before them, leading them to the City, they were safe. But soon some grew weary, and said the City was a great way off, and they expected to have entered it before. Then Jesus would encourage them by raising his glorious right arm, and from his arm came a glorious light which waved over the Advent band, and they shouted, Hallelujah! Others rashly denied the light behind them, and said that it was not God that had led them out so far. The light behind them went out which left their feet in perfect darkness, and they stumbled and got their eyes off the mark and lost sight of Jesus, and fell off the path down in the dark and wicked world below. It was just as impossible for them to get on the path again & go to the City, as all the wicked world which God had rejected. They fell all the way along the path one after another, until we heard the voice of God like many waters, which gave us the day and hour of Jesus’ coming.

There are those who are on the path and have entered that rest of Isaiah 28:12, being instructed by the Holy Spirit and spiritually discerning and learning the deeper things of God, but then turning away and going back to trusting the lies of Satan. For such, there is no hope, for they have crucified the Son of God afresh, Hebrews 6:4-6.

Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. Nehemiah 9:30

A good match for today, God’s people gone astray. He sent Ellen, on the surface accepted, in reality rejected. Isaiah 28:12 again, “yet they would not hear.”

And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding; Nehemiah 10:28

Reformation among God’s people! A wonderful, beautiful thing! Notice the last line, “everyone having knowledge, and having understanding.” They had entered that rest of Isaiah 28:12, that is what this verse is saying. This is the place God’s people need to be, eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ, who is “all in all.”
