To review a little bit, we have this greater light that God made, that rules the day, Genesis 1:16, and this is, we think, the spiritual words of the Bible explaining other spiritual words of the Bible.

Remember John 5:35? Christ told us that John the Baptist was a burning and a shining light, which meant that he was God’s word teaching God’s word. He was a representative of the 144,000, therefore, they can also be defined in this same way; God’s word teaching God’s word.

Isaiah 28:12 tells us “this is the rest.” From Hebrews 4 we understand that this rest is the Sabbath rest. Not just an appearance at church to get your card punched, but an appearance before God to have him teach you with his words what his other words mean in this hidden truth.

This is the Sabbath seal. We are in the sealing time of the 144,000. That’s on page 22 of No. 23. This is the seal of the Father’s name. What is his name? It is his word. But if you do not hang out after the meeting, wait til Jesus is alone, and go up and ASK, ask, seek, knock, you will not get an answer to a question you do not ask, you will not find something you are not looking for, and no doors will open to you that you are not knocking on.

But if you do, you will hear Christ’s words to you, “unto you it is given to know…… the mystery of the kingdom.” Mark 4:10.  Then you enter that rest. Then you prepare for translation to immortality. Then when you hear ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands and thousands of angels singing glory to God, you will be able to bear it.

Many will be lost, hoping and desiring to be Christians, but they made no earnest effort, therefore they will be weighed in the balances and found wanting. The will must be exercised in the right direction. I will be a whole-hearted Christian. I will know the length and breadth, depth and hight [sic] of perfect love. Listen to the words of Jesus. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Ample provisions are made by Jesus Christ to satisfy the hungering and thirsting soul for righteousness. p. 88, Para. 2, [17OT].

The pure element of love will expand the soul for higher attainments, for increased knowledge of divine things, so that it will not be satisfied short of the fullness. The most of professed Christians have no sense of the spiritual strength they might obtain were they as ambitious, zealous, and persevering to gain a knowledge of divine things as they are to obtain the paltry, perishable things of this life. The masses professing to be Christians have been satisfied to be spiritual dwarfs. They have no disposition to make it their highest object to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; hence, godliness is a hidden mystery to them–they cannot understand it. They know not Christ by experimental knowledge. Let men and women who are satisfied with their dwarfed, crippled condition in divine things, be suddenly transported to Heaven, and for an instant witness the high, holy state of perfection that ever abides there,–every soul filled with love; joy beaming from every countenance; the high melodious strains of enchanting music in honor of God and the Lamb; the ceaseless streams of light that flow from the face of him who sitteth upon the throne, and from the Lamb, upon the faces of his saints; and yet higher and greater joy to experience (for the more they receive and exercise the enjoyment of God, the more is their capacity increased to bear more, to rise higher in eternal, immortal enjoyment, and thus continue to receive new and greater supplies from the ceaseless sources of glory and bliss inexpressible);– and could such persons mingle with the heavenly throng, participate in their songs, and endure the high, pure, exalted, spiritual, transporting glory that emanates from God and the Lamb? Oh, no! their probation was lengthened for years that they might learn the language of Heaven, that they might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But they had a selfish business of their own to engage the powers of their minds, and the energies of their beings. They could not afford to serve God unreservedly, and make this a business. Worldly enterprises must come first, and take the best of their powers, and a transient thought is devoted to God. Are such to be transformed after the final decision, He that is holy, let him be holy still, he that is filthy, let him be filthy still? Such a time is coming. p. 88, Para. 3, [17OT].

It stirs my soul to even put these words in type….. I have to pause.

And building yet further about this other language….

We have seen that God defines, in Isaiah 28:11, the refreshing, as a speaking with stammering lips. These lips are further defined in chapter 33 of the same book.

a people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive; of a stammering tongue [margin: ridicilous], that thou canst not understand.  Isaiah 33:19

It is a spiritual process. The Holy Ghost must teach us. “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” This is spiritual.

Even though this process is work, which is the labour of Hebrews 4:11 “let us labour therefore to enter into that rest,” it is a spiritually refreshing work. God made us, he knows what we need, both physically and spiritually. Deeply within us does God work when we follow his ways. We come away, deeply satisfied.

Notice how the 1858 Great Controversy defines the refreshing.

I asked what had made this great change. An angel answered, It is the latter rain; the refreshing from the presence of the Lord; the loud cry of the third angel. p. 186, Para. 2, [1SG ].

It is first placed in the chapter on the shaking and second, bracketed with two other defining terms. And WHAT! terms these! We have the power of God on one side and the loud cry on the other side! What can this mean!

We think at this time, that this understanding of the greater light which God made to rule the day, is the light which goes before the angel of Revelation 18, and it is the third angel’s message as it swells into the loud cry, the second rise of the Sabbath truth.

 I was directed back to the first rise of the Sabbath. p. 3, Para. 3, [1OT].

In the first rise of the third angel’s message, those who engage in the work of God had something to venture. p. 8, Para. 3, [23OT].

These passages imply a second rise for this message. There is a specific passage in the 1858 Great Controversy that applies.

Then I saw another mighty angel commissioned to descend to earth, and unite his voice with the third angel, and give power and force to his message. Great power and glory were imparted to the angel, and as he descended, the earth was lightened with his glory. The light which went before and followed after this angel, penetrated everywhere, as he cried mightily, with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by the second angel, is again given, with the addition of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes in at the right time, and joins in the last great work of the third angel’s message, as it swells into a loud cry. And the people of God are fitted up everywhere to stand in the hour of temptation which they are soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon them, and they united in the message, and fearlessly proclaimed with great power the third angel’s message. p. 193, Para. 2, [1SG ].

Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard voices which seemed to sound everywhere, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues; for her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, and joined it, as the midnight cry joined the second angel’s message in 1844. The glory of God rested upon the patient, waiting saints, and they fearlessly gave the last solemn warning, proclaiming the fall of Babylon, and calling upon God’s people to come out of her; that they might escape her fearful doom. p. 194, Para. 1, [1SG ].

Building further on these points….

God’s word is spiritual. The comparing of spiritual words with other spiritual words is God’s appointed way of walking in the greater light.

O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.  Isaiah 2:5

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.  John 8:12

If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.  John 11:9

If we are going to walk in the light as he is in the light, we must walk in the greater light.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.  1 John 1:7

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.  John 12:35

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:  Ephesians 5:8

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.  Revelation 21:23

And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: Revelation 21:24

And Isaiah 28:12 declares “This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing.”  We are living in the hour “when the times of refreshing shall [are!] come from the presence of the Lord;”  Acts 3:19
This is walking in the light as he is in the light, being refreshed with the light that shines from the Bible —which is God’s words teaching us.

And the light [God’s word] shineth [taught] in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.  John 1:5

We are to enter this Rest. We are not told to get it all, that would be impossible in a lifetime, it is a process. We are told to enter into this process. This is enjoying the fresh air from Christ as he breaths upon us his light, power, and much love, joy, and peace.

    And I saw those who rose up with Jesus send up their faith to Jesus in the Holiest, and praying, Father give us thy spirit. Then Jesus would breathe on them the Holy Ghost. In the breath was light, power and much love, joy and peace. The Day-Star

Building on yesterday’s post….

God created the lesser light for the purpose of hiding the greater light.


And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places,  Isaiah 45:3

I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.  Isaiah 48:6

And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power.  Habakkuk 3:4

I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.  Matthew 11:25

But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.  Luke 9:45

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:  1 Corinthians 2:7

This greater light is the strait and narrow path to the city, the strait gate that we must labour to enter.

The glory and majesty of God were made to pass before me. Said the angel, “He is terrible in his majesty, yet ye realize it not; terrible in his anger, yet ye offend him daily. Strive to enter in at the straight [strait] gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat; because straight [strait] is the gate and narrow is the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” These roads I saw were distinct, separate, in opposite directions. One leads to eternal life; the other to death, eternal death. I saw the distinction in these roads, also the distinction between the companies traveling these roads. The roads are opposite; one is broad and smooth, the other is narrow and rugged. So the parties that travel these roads are opposite in character, in life, in dress, and conversation. p. 13, Para. 1, [2OT].

Many seem to have no realizing sense of their responsibility before God. They are required to strive to enter in at the straight [strait] gate, because many shall seek to enter in and shall not be able. Heaven requires of them to interest themselves to induce others to strive also for an entrance in at the straight [strait] gate. A work is before young and old to earnestly labor, not only to save their own souls, but the souls of others. There are none who have reasoning faculties but that have some influence; and that influence is used either to hinder souls from striving to enter in at the straight [strait] gate, by their own indifference in regard to the matter, or to urge the necessity upon others of diligently striving by their own example, in putting forth earnest, persevering, untiring, efforts themselves. There is no one who occupies a neutral position here. Doing nothing to encourage others, and doing nothing to hinder them. Says Christ, They that gather not with me scatter abroad. Take heed, old and young; you are either doing the work of Christ, to save souls, or the work of Satan, to lead them to perdition. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.” The young can exert a powerful influence, if they will give up their pride and selfishness, and devote themselves to God, but as a general thing they will not bear burdens for others. They have to be carried themselves. The time has come when God requires a change in this respect. He calls upon young and old to be zealous and repent. If they continue in their state of lukewarmness he will spue them out of his month. Says the True Witness, “I know thy works.” p. 38, Para. 1, [11OT].

I have tried in the fear [instruction] of God to set before his people their danger and their sins; and have endeavored to the best of my feeble powers to arouse them. I have stated startling things, which, if they had believed, would have caused them distress and terror, and led them to zeal in repenting of their sins and iniquities. I have stated before them that, from what was shown me, but a small number of those now professing to believe the truth, would eventually be saved–not because they cannot be saved, but because they will not be saved in God’s own appointed way. The way marked out by our divine Lord is too narrow and the gate too strait to admit them with their grasp upon the world, or while cherishing selfishness, or anything wrong. There is no room for these, and yet there are but few who will consent to part with these things, that they may pass the narrow way, and enter the strait gate. p. 135, Para. 1, [18OT].

The words of Christ have been plain. “Strive [agonize] [sic: appears in text with brackets] to enter in at the strait gate; for many I say unto you shall seek to enter in and shall not be able.” Professed Christians are not all so at heart. There are sinners in Zion now, as there were anciently. Isaiah speaks of them in referring to the day of God: “The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from the holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil. He shall dwell on high; his defense shall be the munitions of rocks; bread shall be given him, his waters shall be sure” p. 135, Para. 2, [18OT].

Friendly sympathy and real feelings of tender interest for others would bring you into close relation to our Redeemer, whose advent to the world was for the purpose of doing good, and whose life we are to copy. What are you doing for Christ? “Strive to enter in at the strait gate; for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” p. 100, Para. 1, [25OT].

 There are many in our world who are starving for the love and sympathy which you can give them. There are men who love their wives, but are too selfish to manifest it. They have a false dignity and pride, and will not show their love by words and deeds. There are many men who never know how starved is the heart of the wife for words of tender appreciation and affection. They bury their loved ones from their sight, and murmur at the providence of God that has deprived them of their companions, when, could they look into the inner life of this companion, they would see that their own course was the cause of her premature death. The religion of Jesus Christ will lead us to be kind and courteous, and not so tenacious of our opinions. We should die to self, and esteem others better than ourselves. p. 101, Para. 1, [25OT].

In order to be happy we must strive to attain to that character which Christ exhibited. One marked peculiarity of Christ was his self-denial and benevolence. He came not to seek his own. He went about doing good, and this was his meat and drink. We may, by following the example of the Saviour, be in holy communion with Him, and in daily seeking to imitate his character and follow his example, we shall be a blessing to the world, and shall secure for ourselves contentment here, and eternal reward hereafter. p. 125, Para. 2, [27OT].

Time for another review and expansion.

God has told us in Psalms 119:105 that his word can be defined as both lamp and light.

In Genesis 1:5 God further defines light as day, he also defines darkness as night.

We might use a piece of paper here to start drawing some lines, possibly a Y laid down to indicate a branch of thought. God is placing opposites before us. Day vs night.

Psalms 82:5 tells us that darkness is not knowing and not understanding. This God calls night.

Deuteronomy 4:39 & 11:2 tells us that the day is when we will know.

So God lays down these opposites for us to understand by contrast. Now look at this next text.

And God made two great lights;
the greater light to rule the day, and
the   lesser   light to rule the night:  Genesis 1:16

According to this, God made two Bibles… in one.

We think the surface meaning is the lesser light of the Bible.
The greater light has to be the spiritual words of the Bible spiritually defined by the Bible,… and not by man, or any of his inventions.

There is more. To rule is to guide, Proverbs 6:7

Notice these texts.

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.  Psalms 32:8
Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, Psalms 73:24

So God guides and instructs us with his word, that’s what counsel is.

Now look at this text.

Ye are all the children of light, [God’s word]
and the children of the day: [the greater light]
we are not of the night, nor of darkness.  1 Thessalonians 5:5

The New Testament, in perfect harmony with the Old Testament, Genesis 1:16. How perfectly beautiful!!!

Someone sent me some information on the Desire of Ages. I had not seen nor heard of this before. I’ll put some excerpts up so we can look at them.

In 1982, Dr. Fred Veltman, then chairman of the religion department of Pacific Union College, was asked by the Seventh-day Adventist church to analyze the charges of plagiarism brought by Walter Rea and others against Ellen White. Dr. Veltman spent eight years at church expense estimated at $450,000, studying The Desire of Ages. His research was printed in the Adventist church’s official magazine for clergy, named Ministry. By Fred Veltman (Ministry, October 1990)

It’s very interesting to me that the church would spend that kind of money on this book. Evidently Walter Rea was doing more damage to the church than I was aware. Apparently Fred did a good job. We now have some further admissions by the church, officially.

Fred does an excellent job of relating his research for the reader. I highly recommend the article. He creates fourteen summary statements to answer fourteen corresponding questions that cover the bulk of his work.  I selected the one I thought most significant.

1. Do we have any original (hand-written) manuscripts of Ellen White on the DA text?

 No chapters have been located in either handwritten or copy form. Several sentences from three chapters have been found in Ellen White’s diaries, and significant portions of three additional chapters were developed from manuscripts dating from 1897. Handwritten and copied texts exist for portions of the pre-DA text, treating the content of 10 of the 15 chapters. [He really narrowed the research to 15 chapters.]

What I see here is an admission that Arthur White was correct when he identified who actually did the work for DA. This is found in The Australian Years, page 385.

As the materials were assembled and arranged into chapters, careful attention had to be given to the sequence of the events in the Saviour’s life. To what extent and in what detail visions provided the sequence in ministry and miracles in Christ’s life and work is not known. It is known that a decade earlier she made a significant request: “Tell Mary to find me some histories of the Bible that would give me the order of events.”-Letter 38, 1885. The Gospel writers in their accounts did not help much in the point of sequence. In the absence of direct instruction from Ellen White, or clues in the materials themselves, Miss Davis consulted carefully prepared harmonies of the Gospels, and as the work progressed made considerable use of S. J. Andrews’ Life of Our Lord Upon the Earth, which as noted on the title page took into account “Historical, Chronological, and Geographical Relations.” {4BIO 384.5}
 As the work was thought to be nearing completion in 1896, Marian, working on the three general introductory chapters, “`God With Us,'” “The Chosen People,” and “`The Fullness of the Time,'” sought the counsel of Herbert Lacey of the Avondale school on the arrangement of paragraphs. He was a rather youthful graduate of the classical course offered at Battle Creek College. He made some helpful suggestions in the matter of the sequence of the thoughts presented, which, when it became known, gave birth in later years, when he was known as a seasoned college Bible teacher, to rumors that Lacey had a prominent role in authoring the book. In both oral and written statements he flatly denied such a role (DF 508, H. C. Lacey to S. Kaplan, July 24, 1936). {4BIO 385.1}

Now the source of the errors should become more apparent as the work of man, not God. God would not have his prophet state that Christ is in the Holy Place, instead of the Most Holy. See page 568, original paging, count up from the bottom of the page ten lines, start reading, carefully, right there.

There is this remarkable story in the Bible,… about a man called Noah.

I was reading on something the other day and this text caught my eye. That is how God works you know. First, we must set the stage. I want to bring some apparently disconnected thoughts together, then show you the connecting thought, or text in this case.

God told us early on, in The Day-Star, an interesting piece of information. I’ll show a bit of the context and then we will extract what we are after.

The 144,000 shouted, Hallelujah! as they recognized their friends who had been torn from them by death, and in the same moment we were changed and caught up together with them to meet the Lord in the air. We all entered the cloud together, and were 7 days ascending to the sea of glass, when Jesus brought along the crowns and with his own right hand placed them on our heads.

The first thought is the marked text. On to the second one.

This deals with calendering issues. That the Advent pioneers were correct in their reckoning of October 22, 1844, should be a mute point. That was, or would have been, an actual Day of Atonement feast. They figured that Christ would return to earth on that day.

Because they were correct in 1844 does not mean we would, or could be correct about calculating a future date. I’ll explain.

We have a pure Bible record that Christ was crucified on a Friday. Yet today, in 2013, according to the best calculations man can make, as reported by many, using government, it seems to have been Navy? resources, Christ was actually crucified on a Wednesday. I take this as proof that man can not accurately calculate God’s time. Hold that thought.

Let’s review some thoughts about Noah’s ark. It was a means of transportation from a world destroyed by God to a new world. It was the rescue ship, the lifeboat. It was the communicating link from the old to the new.

Now I will remind you of what we are told in No. 20, pages 42-49, that the authentic Spirit of Prophecy is not to give new light. This means that everything we are told has it’s source in the Bible, it is our job to dig it out; probably though the use of the language of Heaven, spiritual things spiritually discerned, the Bible defining it’s own words.

Here is the text.

And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. Genesis 8:4

I was brought to tears as I meditated on this text.

The Day of Atonement was on the tenth day of the seventh month.

If Christ were to come on that day, then it will take seven days to get to Heaven.

If the ark were a figure of the cloud upon which Christ comes and upon which the saved ride to Heaven, then it would be on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the saints would arrive.

I do not believe that man will be able to calculate God’s time. God can do anything. He made the sun stand still, he made it go backwards. He can have the new moon show up when he wants it to show. He is not indebted to the laws of nature as we know them.

This would make the mountains of Ararat a figure of Heaven, or something in Heaven.

We know the Rest is spiritually entering into God’s word, which is housed in the Ark of the Covenant. In the text the ark rests after the trip on the seventeenth day, in a new world.

Using these, not yet proven to be correct, figures from a real, literal story, combined with our other thoughts introduced above, we get the Bible confirmation of The Day-Star vision in the seven day trip to Heaven for all the redeemed.

There is a great deal that needs to be studied on this, yet the figures seem to be a match. An amazing match actually. The whole story of Noah, as written, may hold much information for the 144,000 as they enter the final scenes of earth’s probation. Certainly the closing of the door is a figure of the close of probation. Lot’s to think about….

We have a unique challenge today. You will need to look at Mark 9:43-48 to follow the display. Jerry was showing the peg words to me from this text. It is amazing. We are not pretending to understand it fully at this time, but it is obvious that God has a message in the word definitions, in the order given. We wonder….

So, what I have done is to re-arrange the texts to match up the peg words for display purposes, phrase to phrase. This really makes the peg words pop out, and when compared to the Bible order you don’t get lost in the text.

    And if thy hand offend thee,  cut it off: 43
    And if thy foot   offend thee,  cut it off: 45                                     
    And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: 47

    it is better for thee to enter into life maimed,  43
    it is better for thee to enter halt into life, 45

God is grouping together body parts and declaring them as one. Taken as a whole, it appears that God is saying that it is better to be missing half your body parts and make it to Heaven than to try and keep those parts and miss Heaven.

Think about this from God’s perspective. His main concern is to get you there, in Heaven, and nothing else matters much. Why? Because he will re-create your body, but he will not force you to be in Heaven against your will.

From the spiritual perspective, hand = foot = eye.  Hand can be defined as power and work, which are our acts; foot can be defined as path or way; eye is known as understanding. These things make up what we are. It appears that Christ might be telling us to give up half of what we are to make it to Heaven. Amazing.

In connection with this is another passage from the Bible.

And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give
  life for life,
            eye for eye,
         tooth for tooth,
         hand for hand,
           foot for foot,
    burning for burning,
      wound for wound,
        stripe for stripe.

Exodus 21:23-25

I’m not sure what to make of all this, but one thing is very clear, God is opening up his word to his church, I believe in preparation for the trip to Heaven. It takes seven days you know.

Distractions. This word has an interesting connotation.

verb (used with object)
1. to draw away or divert, as the mind or attention:
The music distracted him from his work.

Notice the example used in the above definition, in italics. To my mind a distraction is a drawing away from the top priority of the moment. Not always, of course, but usually.

Spiritually our top priority is to perfect our character for Heaven. Our probation closes at death, for most of mankind. Failure to form a character fit for Heaven and eternal life, in this life, means failing to secure eternal life.

In this context, everything about life on earth could be a distraction. God has it all planned out however. All we need to do is follow his directions. But we must take time to read the directions.

Here is one.

 Let your moderation be known unto all men.  Philippians 4:5

Notice it does not say, extreme. It’s the world that wants, extreme, to be known to all. That is headline making stuff!
While we have to work, we don’t have to work like the world does. And the same holds true for every area of life. God want’s us to live in the world like Christ did, in the first part, mostly.

What do most people do? They get up and go to work, put in a full day, come home and watch TV til bedtime. That’s the short version.

God calls us to TAKE time out of our schedule; to do certain things. After getting vertical in the morning we need to eat something. God wants us to eat some manna —which is a phrase that means to read some instruction from God first, before eating physical food, because that would be a distraction from the instruction.

This probably means that you need to be getting up earlier; which probably means that you need to be going to bed earlier, which probably means that you can not do so much in the evening. It all ties in. If it sounds like too much for you, think about this: eternal: life.

When you decide to make your character formation the top priority in your life, suddenly the things of this world take on a whole different perspective. Most of what the world has to offer is a distraction from your top priority, perfecting your character, getting ready for Heaven.

I know at least two women who purposely get up very early, one at 4:00 AM, just to study. Why? Because they are serious! Eternal Life is at stake! The people before the flood lived a few hundred years! now we only get seventy.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.  Psalms 90:10

It’s hard to exercise this kind of faith. But it becomes a labour of love.

Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.  Luke 13:24

 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest,  Hebrews 4:11

It’s going to take work, effort, because you are going to have to do a lot of reading. You must get correct information inside your mind. THAT is the key to making good decisions, taking good actions.

Said the angel, “Deny self, ye must step fast.” I saw that some of us have had time to get the truth, and to advance step by step, and every step we have taken has given us strength to take the next. But now time is almost finished, and what we have been years learning, they will have to unlearn much, and learn again. And those who will not receive the mark of the beast and his image, when the decree goes forth, must have decision now to say, nay, we will not regard the institution of the beast. p. 29, Para. 2, [CEV].

After all that heavy work and labour, God has a beautiful promise.

 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Matthew 11:28

So often I hear people screaming at telling me that light is advancing, therefore we should use the Testimonies in the new format, Volumes 1 through 9. Then, in nearly the same breath, they will quote something like the following, from James, and virtually deny to him any growth of understanding at all.

Here is a passage from an article James wrote for the R&H, first in 1851, later reprinted June 9, 1853, and October 3, 1854.

       Every Christian is therefore in duty bound to take the Bible as a perfect rule of faith and duty. He should pray fervently to be aided by the Holy Spirit in searching the Scriptures for the whole truth, and for his whole duty. He is not at liberty to turn from them to learn his duty through any of the gifts. We say that the very moment he does, he places the gifts in a wrong place, and takes an extremely dangerous position. The Word should be in front, and the eye of the church should be placed upon it, as the rule to walk by, and the fountain of wisdom, from which to learn duty in “all good works.” But if a portion of the church err from the truths of the Bible, and become weak, and sickly, and the flock become scattered, so that it seems necessary for God to employ the gifts of the Spirit to correct, revive and heal the erring, we should let him work. Yea more, we should pray for him to work and plead earnestly that he would work by the Spirit’s power, and bring the scattered sheep to his fold. Praise the Lord, he will work. Amen. {April 21, 1851 JWe, ARSH 70.3}

Usually… the unbelievers quote the first four sentences, and stop. They do not take the very next sentence into the descussion, It condemns their attitude and shows the right relation.

But even taking up the argument, as they present it, they still virtually deny James a growing understanding. Exactly 20 years later Testimony No. 20 was published. Here is an excerpt.


    God has been pleased to give you line upon line, and precept upon precept. But there are not many of you that really know what is contained in the Testimonies. You are not familiar with the Scriptures. If you had made God’s word your study, with a desire to reach the Bible standard and attain to Christian perfection, you would not have needed the Testimonies. p. 43, Para. 2, [20OT].

It is because you have neglected to acquaint yourselves with God’s inspired Book that he has sought to reach you by simple, direct testimonies, calling your attention to the words of inspiration you had neglected to obey, and urging you to fashion your lives in accordance with its pure and elevated teachings. The Lord deigns to warn you, to reprove, to counsel, through the testimonies given, and to impress your minds with the importance of the truth of his word. The written testimonies are not to give new light; but to impress with vividness upon the heart the truths of inspiration already revealed. Man’s duty to God and to his fellow-man has been distinctly specified in God’s word; yet but few of you are obedient to the light given. Additional truth is not brought out; but God has through the testimonies simplified the great truths already given, and in his own chosen way brought them before the people, to awaken and impress the mind with them, that all may be left without excuse. p. 44, Para. 1, [20OT].

…. I referred them to ancient Israel. God gave them his law; but they would not obey it. He then gave them ceremonies and ordinances, that in the performance of these, God might be kept in remembrance. They were so prone to forget him, and the claims he had upon them, that it was necessary to keep their minds stirred up to realize their Creator. Had they been obedient, and loved to keep God’s commandments, the multitude of ceremonies and ordinances would not have been required. p. 46, Para. 1, [20OT].

If the people of God who now profess to be his peculiar treasure would obey his requirements, as specified in his word, special testimonies would not be given to awaken them to their duty, and impress upon them their sinfulness and fearful danger in neglecting to obey the word of God.

My understanding of this passage is that the Spirit of Prophecy is not optional. It is not an elective class. All God’s people are required to cherish —and use, the light he has given,… or it will be removed from them.

Consciences have been blunted, because light has been set aside, neglected, and despised. And God will remove them [Spirit of Prophecy] away from the people, and will deprive them of strength, and humble them. p. 46, Para. 2, [20OT].

The very fact that God allowed a counterfeit SOP to be created is mute evidence of his displeasure. These days, only the honest in heart searching for truth seek out the authentic Spirit of Prophecy, even though they may not know for what they are searching.
