The last remaining word is remaining. We’ll look at these verses and see what God has for us.

 9.) remaining

And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.  Genesis 7:23

So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.  Joshua 10:40

So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.  2 Kings 10:11

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  1 Thessalonians 4:17

Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.  Revelation 3:2

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.  Isaiah 66:22

The above texts all define remain as being alive, though some do so by implication.

And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.  Joshua 8:22

O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.  Ezra 9:15

So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.  Jeremiah 42:17

So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.  Jeremiah 44:14

Here we have a set of texts that define remain as escape.

Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. 26 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.  Hebrews 12:26, 27

We find this verse implies that remaining means not removed and not shaken.

The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.  Proverbs 21:16

Does this mean that this man will live in the church of the spiritually dead? It seems so.

For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.  Proverbs 2:21

Dwell is to remain.

Quite the journey of discovery. We have three clear definitions and one not so clear. I’ll leave it for you to follow those three words through the Bible and see where it leads you.

We have seen devour several times before, now we will see some new verses, giving us an expanded definition.

   8.) devour

When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up thy sons, O Zion, against thy sons, O Greece, and made thee as the sword of a mighty man.
And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord GOD shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.
The LORD of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.
And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.
For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids. Zechariah 9:13-17

Devour means to subdue.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.  Genesis 1:28

Subdue means to have dominion.

And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.  2 Samuel 8:1

To smite is to subdue.

He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.  Psalms 47:3

An interesting verse, for we have subdue being defined as under; but under is used as a peg word in a parallelism; which defines people as nations. A nice exercise.

And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.  Daniel 2:40

Another excellent exercise. Subdue is defined as breaketh in pieces, which in turn is defined as bruise, which means subdue equals bruise.

And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.  Leviticus 10:2

Devour equals death.

Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble,
and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.  Isaiah 5:24

To devour is to consume.

And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.  Ezekiel 15:7

This verse shows the fire devouring, but we know it is the word of God not a literal fire. Look at the text. How could one go out from a literal fire and not be devoured, which is equal to another fire that will devour? But this is God’s word. A fire that if one runs from hearing it another of God’s words will devour them.

Wednesday January 30, 2013

We have some duplication of verses with some of the words because they are so closely connected. This word kindle we have seen before in several other texts.

I like having a fire to warm myself and look at. When I think of our subject word I think of getting kindling to kindle a fire. Let’s see what God has in mind.

 7.) kindle

For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.  Isaiah 9:18

Kindle is devour.

Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.  Isaiah 10:16

Kindle is burning.

But I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings, saith the LORD: and I will kindle a fire in the forest thereof, and it shall devour all things round about it.  Jeremiah 21:14

Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.  Jeremiah 50:31, 32

This one is more difficult to see. There are no parallel peg words, but there are parallel thoughts expressed. Especially when put together with other texts so defining kindle, it’s much easier to see.

Notice also the parallelism between the two texts. Forest is cities.

And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.  47 And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.  48 Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! they say of me, Doth he not speak parables?  Ezekiel 20:47-49

Of this last verse, harken back to what this language really is, Christ spoke in parables!

Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? he gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow.  Isaiah 41:2

I really like this text! It is full of the hidden treasure. We will examine this text in full another day; for now notice that dust is stubble, then go on to see if you can discover the other meanings to correctly understand the verse. Hint: it’s talking about the early Advent people.

We need to keep in mind certain facts, even if very simple. When comparing these different words, if word A is equal to word B, and we find that word C is equal to word B, this means that word A is equal to word C; even if we have not found any text that directly makes that definition.

As we go on with our study we will find such definitions all over the Bible. It’s just a part of God’s plan to teach his people.

Our sixth word is stubble. Appearing eighteen times in the Bible, it is nevertheless an important word. I like James’ comment about the Bible, “there are no non-essentials.” I like that.

 6.) stubble

How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger. They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.  Job 21:17,18

For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven;

and all the proud, yea,

and all that do wickedly,

shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.  Malachi 4:1

The wicked are defined as stubble. A = B = C then A = C, and Esau is defined as the wicked.

O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.
As the fire burneth a wood, and

as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;
So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. Psalms 83:13-15

Now we have a wheel being defined as stubble.

Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble,
and the flame consumeth the chaff,
so their    root    shall be as rottenness,
and their blossom shall go up as dust:
because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 5:24

Stubble is defined as chaff; with a nice set of parallelism.

Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.  Isaiah 47:13,14

More of Satan’s agents being defined as stubble.

For while they be folden together as thorns,

and while they are drunken as drunkards,

they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.  Nahum 1:10

This interesting text defines stubble as thorns, and as drunkards. What a combination!

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.
A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.
The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.
Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.
Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.
They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:
Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.
They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.
The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it? Joel 2:1-11

I think Joel 2 is intimately connected with Obadiah. Just my observation.

Monday January 28, 2013

As relates to our study, Esau is quite the character. He represents the GCSDA church. Esau despised his birthright. The SDA church also despises their spiritual birthright. It’s too simple and “like totally out on a limb!” There is no respectability in it’s roots. Nothing like today. Now we have some plush carpet on the floor of a temperature controlled, architect designed office. Something that says $$$.

Esau wanted to satisfy his hunger for temporal things. The SDA church also wants temporal things before Christ. These things have become idols. One of these is blind loyalty to the church and it’s supposed authority. Huge.

5.) Esau

Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright. Genesis 25:34

Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.  Hebrews 12:16

The famous story of Esau making the deal of a meal for a birthright.

Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.  Genesis 36:1

Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.  Genesis 36:8

he is Esau the father of the Edomites.  Genesis 36:43

Just in case you were wondering who Esau was.

Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau? And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.  Obadiah 1:8, 9

The way the church of Jacob and the church of Joseph work is spiritual. We see the slaughtering of Ezekiel 9 as strictly spiritual. Any literal slaughtering will be done by God, probably using the plagues.

And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD’S.  Obadiah 1:21

This verse describes the 1000 years in Heaven and what the saints will be doing.

Sunday January 27, 2013

Joseph is our subject word for today. There is a lot of information about Joseph and not much seemingly that connects him with the last days. We’ll look at several texts.

4.) Joseph

Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:
The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him:
But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)
Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren. Genesis 49:22-26

The first texts that we choose are Jacob’s prophecy about Joseph. He is defined here as a “fruitful bough” and you can search that one. Then we have the blessings of his father exceeding the blessings of his forefathers. These blessings are also defined as a crown.

And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath,
And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon,
And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the lasting hills,
And for the precious things of the earth and fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the bush: let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren.
His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh. Deuteronomy 33:13-17

Moses prophecy has elements that we need to consider… later. It does seem that they will apply to future actions taken by Joseph, but we’ll need to study more on that.

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.  1 Chronicles 5:1

This is an important piece of information on the facts of the birthright, Joseph is given the spiritual birthright.

Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.  Psalms 77:15

Jacob and Joseph are grouped together and defined a God’s people.

This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not.
I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots.
Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah. Psalms 81:5-7

The fact that Joseph interpreted dreams is proof of the spiritual birthright. This text confirms that Joseph received instruction from God, for thunder is God’s word. I am not sure what the secret place is.

Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand. Ezekiel 37:19

I consider this to be the defining text. God is placing Joseph on a level with Judah and calling them one. Plus we have Joel 2 telling us that there will be a perfect unity among God’s people. Joseph will be there to be counted.

Sabbath January 26, 2013

FIRE!!!… has been written about a lot. Someone said that it is a good servant but a terrible master. And so it is, as we heat our homes, often, with fire, but run in terror from a forest that is burning out of control.

Fire, our third subject word from Obadiah 18, is a hidden treasure word carrying huge amounts of spiritual information to the table. Because of the seriousness of physical fire, we get some idea of the seriousness of spiritual fire.

Because of this seriousness, because it applies to the end of time and the last fearful warning from God to all mankind, it is a major focal point of much that God has to say. We are combining fire and flame because as defined they are the same.

 3.) fire & flame

Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD;  Jeremiah 23:29

and the light of Israel shall be for a fire,
and his Holy One for a flame:
and it shall burn and devour
his thorns and
his briers in one day;  Isaiah 10:17

Having defined God’s word before, in Psalms 119:105, as light, we can now add the word fire as a definition. And God confirms that, here in Isaiah 10:17.

Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble,
and the flame consumeth the chaff,
so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust:
because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts,
and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 5:24

We note here that fire = flame, devoureth = consumeth, and stubble = chaff.

Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.  Isaiah 47:14

Now we have confirmation that this fire is spiritual, not literal. If it were literal we could get physically warm at it, or we could sit before it and get warm; but no, it is spiritual. Now as we go into Joel, you will have a new understanding of the message God is trying to get across.

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
Joel 2:1-5

Here again is the mention of the fire devouring the stubble, just as we are told in Obadiah 18.

Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.  Isaiah 10:16

Parables is exactly what this language is all about. The meaning is hidden from those who should not be saved.

Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.  Jeremiah 5:14

And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.  Ezekiel 15:7

We are not doing an exhaustive study on fire today, we are showing that the fire is spiritual, not literal.

Friday January 25, 2013

Our next hidden treasure word in the text of Obadiah 18 is, Jacob. In some respects this appears to be rather complicated, for the name means one thing, God, however, changed Jacob’s name. We’ll put up some verses and see what comes of it.

   2.) Jacob

And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.  Genesis 25:26

And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.  Genesis 25:27

And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:  Genesis 27:11

And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. Genesis 27:36

And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.  Genesis 35:10

And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:  1 Kings 18:31

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter;  Romans 2:29

Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.  Galatians 3:7

And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.  Galatians 3:29

By these texts we can see that even though God changed Jacob’s name, he still used it later on and over the years, more than once. Also, the fact is made abundantly clear that all who accept the gospel and become Christians are, spiritually, the children of Abraham, and, spiritually, belong to one of the tribes of the sons of Jacob.

And this brings us to the 144,000. 12,000 of each tribe. Interestingly, there are only twelve gates into the city. We think these verses apply here, speaking of Abraham.

and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.  Genesis 12:3

that he might be the father of all them that believe, Romans 4:11

of Abraham; who is the father of us all,  Romans 4:16

Thus, all, even from Adam to the last saint to be saved, will be, spiritually, a son of Jacob. But it is the 144,000 that Jacob especially figures.

Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.  Jeremiah 30:7

In the 1858 Great Controversy, page 203, God tells us that those living through that time must “drink of the cup and be baptized with the baptism” of the anguish they experience, before being delivered. We wonder many things about this day.

The first of the hidden treasure words in Obadiah 18 is, house.  This word is used 2,026 times in the Bible, according to e-Sword. We need to discover the definition of the word so we can understand what God wants to communicate through this verse.

1.) house

And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.  Genesis 7:1

We have all read the story of Noah before. We know that Noah did not disassemble his house and move it into the ark. Noah used the ark as his new home. Gail Riplinger points out that God puts definitions right near the word to be defined. So we can look around and see.

And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.  And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.  Genesis 7:5, 7

Here we have it! Verse 5 tells us that Noah was obedient, verse 7 gives us the scope of his house, it was those of his family.

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country,
 and from thy kindred,
and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:  Genesis 12:1

And just a bit more into the book of Genesis God confirms the proper definition. This time he uses peg words so that we will be led to focus on this definition. Interesting too, is that this is the second reference in the e-Sword list with the word house.

But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.  Hebrews 3:6

But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.  1 Timothy 3:15

Then we have house defined as you and I, and in the next verse, as the church. Very interesting to allow God to teach us. 😉 I love the beauty of the harmony!

Wednesday January 23, 2013

Obadiah is an amazing book. I believe it is a specific prophecy of the SDA church in the end of time.

The Bible is quite short, especially considering that it covers about 6,000 years of earth’s history. So very few things are repeated, and when they are, it’s important to pay attention. Obadiah 1 comes under this heading. It is a repeat of Jeremiah 49:14.

I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.  Jeremiah 49:14

The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.  Obadiah 1:1

Edom, as you remember, is the home of Esau, who was the one that despised his spiritual birthright, and by extension, the SDA church, who has forsaken the path of present truth as marked out by the ture pioneers. They have also forsaken the authentic Spirit of Prophecy, even calling it “idle tales” (No. 20, page 46) and rising in battle against God’s true prophet, Ellen.

We are going to focus on verse 18 for next ten or eleven posts. There is a great deal of information in these few lines.

and the house of Jacob shall be a fire,
and the house of Joseph           a flame,
and the house of Esau          for stubble,

and they shall kindle in them, and devour them;
and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau;
for the LORD hath spoken it.  Obadiah 1:18

For our purposes, I have colored the text of each hidden treasure word in bold and blue. We have ten different terms we will be studying to draw out the hidden treasure meaning, then we will paraphrase the text to discover at least one of the messages hidden within.

Some will be long and some short, but you can work in advance of me and see what you can find about God’s message to his people in this verse.
