It is with great joy that I share today’s material with you! I just love the beautiful harmony of the authentic Spirit of Prophecy with the Bible, the KJV of course. Jerry M. pointed out to me, a few other things he had found.

I just revel in the mindset that, immersed in the hidden treasure, sees God’s words, both, in the Bible and in the authentic Spirit of Prophecy, come alive with a deeper meaning.

The pure element of love will expand the soul for higher attainments, for increased knowledge of divine things, so that it will not be satisfied short of the fullness. The most of professed Christians have no sense of the spiritual strength they might obtain were they as ambitious, zealous, and persevering to gain a knowledge of divine things as they are to obtain the paltry, perishable things of this life. The masses professing to be Christians have been satisfied to be spiritual dwarfs. They have no disposition to make it their highest object to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; hence, godliness is a hidden mystery to them — they cannot understand it. They know not Christ by experimental knowledge.
Oh, no! their (Christian professors) probation was lengthened for years that they might learn the language of Heaven, that they might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But they had a selfish business of their own to engage the powers of their minds, and the energies of their beings. They could not afford to serve God unreservedly, and make this a business. Worldly enterprises must come first, and take the best of their powers, and a transient thought is devoted to God. p. 88, Para. 3, [17OT].

Total commitment is the fare that must be paid to buy the mystery of godliness — or you will never understand it. This is a part of learning the language of Heaven.

Some have sanctimonious, apparently conscientious and very pious, doubts, which they will cautiously drop, which has tenfold more power to strengthen those who are wrong and to lesson our influence and weaken the confidence of God’s people in our work, than if they came out more frankly. These poor souls, I saw, were deceived by Satan. They flatter themselves that they are all right, and in favor with God, rich in spiritual discernment, when they are blind, poor, and wretched. They are doing the work of Satan, and thinking they have a zeal for God. p. 11, Para. 5, [23OT].

“Rich” is here defined as “spiritual discernment.” The next step is to find where the Bible defines it this way; for the Spirit of Prophecy is not to give new light. (No. 20, pages 42 – 49)

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. Revelation 3:14-22

The problem with Laodicea is the wealth. Now, they are wealthy in temporal things, but our study has uncovered the fact that what they feel really rich in, is spiritual discernment. I think the root of this can be found in the stacks of books, papers and manuscripts with Ellen’s name attached. And mind you, precious few have ever read the whole, it just feels good to “have” all that wealth of spiritual information.

But of course, on this site, people learn the truth about the counterfeit SOP, just like the counterfeit bibles scattered over the land. Following your feelings is following your inclination; following your faith is following Christ in obedience.

A few days ago we talked about the holy kiss. Here is more on that. You might want to click on the link, in the first sentence, and review that information. The term “holy kiss” appears in four texts.

Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you. Romans 16:16
All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss. 1 Cor. 16:20
Greet one another with an holy kiss. 2 Cor. 13:12
Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss. 1 Thes. 5:26

Notice how the first text actually defines the holy kiss as being a “salute.” The second text further defines it as “greet.” Virtually all the books of the New Testament use the holy kiss. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts are not so plain. Without further comment, here are the holy kisses, “written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” 1 Cor. 10:11

To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 1:7

Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; 1 Cor. 1:3-4

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia: Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Cor. 1:1-2

Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: Galatians 1:3-4

Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: Ephes. 1:2-3

Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Philip. 1:2

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, Col. 1:2-3

Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; 1 Thes. 1:1-2

Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth; 2 Thes. 1:2-3

Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Tim. 1:2

To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day; 2 Tim. 1:2-3

To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. Titus 1:4

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers, Philemon 1:3-4

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Hebrews 3:1

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. James 1:1

Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 1 Peter 1:2-3

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 2 Peter 1:2-3

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 1 John 1:1-4

The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. 2 John 1:1-4

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. 3 John 1:2-4

Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied. Jude 1:1-2

John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Rev. 1:4-6

Spiritually understanding what God has for you in the Bible is the “meat” of 1 Corinthians 1 – 3:3, and the “rest” of Hebrews. This understanding does not remove the literal understanding in every case. At this point, we have much to learn. Of course the focus is on the future. We all want to know what is going to happen, when, &c. But it is important to confine ourselves to what God has revealed; and all parts must be in harmony.

A sister in the faith shared these…….

When you search the Scriptures with an earnest desire to learn the truth, God will breathe his Spirit into your heart, and impress your mind with the light of his word. The Bible is its own interpreter, one passage explaining another. By comparing scriptures referring to the same subjects you will see beauty and harmony of which you have never dreamed. There is no other book the perusal of which strengthens and enlarges, elevates and ennobles the mind, as does this Book of books. Its study imparts new vigor to the mind, which is thus brought in contact with subjects requiring earnest thought, and is drawn out in prayer to God for power to comprehend the truths revealed. p. 160, Para. 1, [29OT].

Thus, mystery after mystery will be unfolded to your comprehension. Two valuable victories will be gained by this course. You have not only secured useful knowledge, but the exercise of the mind has increased mental strength and power. The key found to unlock one mystery, may develop also other precious gems of knowledge heretofore undiscovered. p. 43, Para. 1, [29OT].

As we have followed down the chain of prophecy, revealed truth for our time has been clearly seen and explained. We are accountable for the privileges that we enjoy, and the light that shines upon our pathway. Those who lived in past generations were accountable for the light which was permitted to shine upon them. Their minds were exercised in regard to different points of Scripture which tested them. But they did not understand the truths which we do. They were not responsible for the light which they did not have. They had the Bible, as we have; but the time for the unfolding of special truth, in relation to the closing scenes of this earth’s history, is during the last generation that shall live upon the earth.
Special truths have been adapted to the conditions of the generations as they have existed. The present truth, which is a test to the people of this generation, was not a test to the people of generations far back. If the light in regard to the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, which now shines upon us, had been given to the generations in the past, God would have held them accountable for the light. p. 172, Para. 1, [20OT].

They should store the mind with useful knowledge, committing to memory portions of Scripture, tracing out the fulfillment of the prophecies, and learning the lessons which Christ gave to his disciples. p. 40, Para. 2, [29OT].

In ancient times God spoke to men by the mouths of prophets and apostles. In these days he speaks to them by the testimonies of his Spirit. There was never a time when God more earnestly instructed his people concerning his will, and the course that he would have them pursue, than now. But will they profit by his teachings, will they receive his reproofs, and heed his warnings? God will accept of no partial obedience nor sanction any compromise with self. p. 8, Para. 2, [27OT].

There are deep mysteries in the word of God, which will never be discovered by minds that are unaided by the Spirit of God. There are also unsearchable mysteries in the plan of redemption, which finite minds can never comprehend. p. 83, Para. 1, [29OT].

Fervent prayer, and fasting before God, have moved the Lord to unlock his treasuries of truth to their understanding.   We may not, in this life, be able to explain the meaning of every passage of Scripture; but there are no vital points of practical truth that will be clouded in mystery. When the time shall come, in the providence of God, for the world to be tested upon the truth for that time, minds will be exercised by the Spirit of God to search the Scriptures, even with fasting and with prayer, until link after link is searched out, uniting in a perfect chain. Every fact which immediately concerns the salvation of men and women is made so clear that none need to err, or walk in darkness. p. 171, Para. 1, [20OT].

And so we see, the testimony of Jesus is the same in every one of his books. The Testimonies for the Church directly, plainly support the idea of spiritual meanings of words in the Bible.

Jerry M. brought some things to my attention about chapter 29, in the 1858 Great Controversy. Once again I was amazed to discover the wordprints of the author’s touch; thoughtprints of his mind.

     CHAPTER XXIX. A Firm Platform.
I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, and would give no countenance to those who would unsettle the established faith of the body.

The faith established by the pioneers, beginning August 7, 1831, with William Miller’s first sermon, and ending with the death of James White and the subsequent take-over of nearly all communications by W. C. White. (And please, don’t write until you have done some reading on Willie, “Topics” on the right, and can ask an intelligent question.) On this site we are about the business of vindicating the authentic Spirit of Prophecy and promoting the proper spiritual understanding of the KJV Bible.

God looked upon them with approbation. I was shown three steps–one, two and three– the first, second and third angels’ messages. Said the angel, Woe to him who shall move a block, or stir a pin in these messages. The true understanding of these messages is of vital importance.

This true understanding will only be achieved by those who make a total commitment to God; nothing held back, in effect, a true conversion. Otherwise, this treasure of treasures will be hidden from your eyes. 1 Corinthians 1:5 – 3:3; Hebrews 5:12 – 6:1; The “hidden manna” of Revelation 2:17.

The destiny of souls hangs upon the manner in which they are received.

Everyone who is exposed to this Advent message is required to intelligently understand these things, enter by faith into the true Sabbath “rest” of Hebrews, of which, attendance at church on Sabbath does not fulfill.

I was again brought down through these messages, and saw how dearly the people of God had purchased their experience. It had been obtained through much suffering and severe conflict. Step by step had God brought them along, until he had placed them upon a solid, immovable platform.

All the true pioneers, as defined by God, as those who were in all the messages, i.e. 1st, 2nd and 3rd angel’s and firm in present truth (see: The Present Truth, No. 11, p. 86), were settled on this clear understanding of truth. Such things as disputes over the “daily” (of Daniel) are nothing but a departure from this “solid, immovable platform.” These are they who follow the suggestions of Satan and, like doubting Thomas, proudly declare that they will not believe the testimony of their brethren relative to the truth.

It is dangerous business to doubt God’s appointed way. We are to prove all things, not doubt all things. Be a believer!

Then I saw individuals as they approached the platform, before stepping upon it examine the foundation. Some with rejoicing immediately stepped upon it. Others commenced to find fault with the laying of the foundation of the platform. They wished improvements made, and then the platform would be more perfect, and the people much happier. Some stepped off the platform and examined it, then found fault with it, declaring it to be laid wrong.

The foundation of this platform was Bible Words Spiritually Discerned. Long before William Miller preached his first sermon, he was moved by God to produce his Rules of Interpretation. This is the foundation of this Advent faith. It is that hidden treasure, that revealed Christ’s second coming, that laid that foundation, that is that foundation.

I saw that nearly all stood firm upon the platform, and exhorted others who had stepped off to cease their complaints, for God was the Master-Builder, and they were fighting against him. They recounted the wonderful work of God, which had led them to the firm platform, and in union nearly all raised their eyes to heaven, and with a loud voice glorified God. This affected some of those who had complained, and left the platform, and again they with humble look stepped upon it. p. 168, Para. 2, [1SG ].

Be encouraged to humble yourself to God’s appointed way, to follow on that strait and narrow path those who have gone before you.

While there are many points to observe in looking at the history of the SDA church, one is quite prominent, that of organization. We are not here going into the depths of minutia on detail, but to show that the change to the current form was totally, not necessary.

We present an excerpt from Life Incidents, written by James. It details the beginning and formation of a form of organization that worked, and worked very well, supplying the wants of the cause, locally, nationally and for world missions. God blessed their work. Today, it seems the saints will remain virgins, without any such organization. But we expect God’s final decision.

The subject of church order had been from time to time set forth in the Review since 1850, and the necessity of some simple form of organization had been quite fully discussed. The positions taken upon the subject of Babylon, the burden of the second message, had led many of our people to stand in great fear of organization, however simple. Babylon signifies confusion. God did not design to bring his people out of the confusion of Babylon into the greater confusion of no order nor discipline. This would only be making a bad matter worse. His object in bringing them out from the churches was to discipline and unite them for the last great battle of truth under the third message. It was not ambition to build up a denomination that suggested organization, but the sheer necessities of the case. For a time, the subject of organization waded heavily. But the importance of united action, and some simple form of organization by which we could legally hold our places of worship, and property necessary to efficiently conduct the publishing department, being earnestly plead by those who saw and felt the wants of the cause, our people generally soon overcame their fears, and united fully in the work. It has proved a success.

Notice how simple and easy the form of organization. Easy to re-institute should God so call.

In our church organization, the General Conference, composed of delegates from the different State Conferences, is our highest authority. This Conference chooses annually, besides the usual officers, a committee of three who have the oversight of the work throughout the entire field.
Next to this are our several State Conferences, composed of the ministers and delegates from all the churches, in their respective States. These Conferences also have a committee of three to take the oversight of the work in their several States during the Conference year.
Next to these stand individual churches, associated together under the following simple covenant: “We, the undersigned, hereby associate ourselves together as a church, taking the name Seventh-day Adventists, covenanting to keep the commandments of God, and faith of Jesus.” The officers of the church are local elders, deacons, and clerk. Life Incidents, page 299-300.

Rather different than what you thought, yeah?

This past Sunday we talked about James’ being called by God to write. The following excerpt shows something of Ellen’s feelings about her husband and his future.

“About this time I wrote as follows, which appeared in the Review for Jan. 10, 1856: ‘We have felt the power and blessing of God for a few weeks past. He has been very merciful. He has wrought in a wonderful manner for my husband. We have brought him to our great Physician in the arms of our faith, and like blind Bartimeus have cried, ‘Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on us;’ and we have been comforted. The healing power of God has been felt. All medicine has been laid aside, and we rely alone upon the arm of our great Physician. We are not yet satisfied. Our faith says, Entire restoration. We have seen the salvation of God, yet we expect to see and feel more. I believe without a doubt that my husband will yet be able to sound the last notes of warning to the world. For weeks past our peace has been like a river. Our souls triumph in God. Gratitude, unspeakable gratitude, fills my soul for the tokens of God’s love which we have of late felt and seen. We feel like dedicating ourselves anew to God.’ Life Sketches p. 317.

We agree, that James is helping to sound that warning, through his written materials, fulfilling Revelation 14:13.

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

The subject of the Sabbath was growing clearer, and up to this time the foregoing positions were being presented to small congregations, by Bro. Bates and myself. Opposition was waxing stronger, and the battle was increasing. Burdened with a sense of duty to enter the field in defense of truth, in July, 1849, I issued the first number of a little sheet called The Present Truth, from which I give the following extract to show the spirit of that time: “It is through the truth that souls are sanctified and made ready to enter the everlasting kingdom. Obedience to the truth will kill us to this world, that we may be made alive, by faith in Jesus. “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.’ John 17,17. This was the prayer of Jesus. ‘I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.’ 3 John,4.

“Error darkens and fetters the mind, but the truth brings with it freedom, and gives light and life. True charity, or love, ‘rejoiceth in the truth.’ 1 Cor. 13,6. ‘Thy law is truth.’ Ps. 119,142. David describing the day of slaughter, when the pestilence shall walk in darkness, and destruction waste at noonday, so that ‘a thousand shall fall at thy side and ten thousand at thy right hand,’ says: ‘He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust; his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.’ Ps. 91,4.

“The storm is coming. War, famine and pestilence are already in the field of slaughter. Now is the time, the only time to seek a shelter in the truth of the living God. In Peter’s time there was present truth, or truth applicable to that present time. The church have ever had a present truth. The present truth now, is that which shows present duty, and the right position for us who are about to witness the time of trouble such as never was. Present truth must be oft repeated, even to those who are established in it. This was needful in the apostles’ day, and it certainly is no less important for us, who are living just before the close of time.

“For months I have felt burdened with the duty of writing and publishing the present truth for the scattered flock; but the way has not been opened for me to commence the work until now. I tremble at the word of the Lord, and the importance of this time. What is done to spread the truth must be done quickly. The four angels are holding the angry nations in check but a few days, until the saints are sealed; then the nations will rush, like the rushing of many waters. Then it will be too late to spread before precious souls the present, saving, living truths of the Holy Bible. My spirit is drawn out after the scattered remnant. May God help them to receive the truth, and be established in it.”

A few numbers of this little sheet had been published which, with Bro. Bates’ publications, were a great help in the cause. Then the few that taught the truth traveled on foot, in second-class cars, or on steamboat decks, for want of means. The testimony they bore was pointed. God worked with them mightily; and the cheering news of conversions to the truth were coming in on every hand. Several brethren sold possessions, and handed out their means, to advance the cause. Young men and women could then give up their wages to help preachers from place to place, and to publish books for gratuitous distribution. All seemed to give cheerfully, and God abundantly blessed the cheerful giver. Ministers and people then felt for souls, and labored for them as though the coming of the day of God was an absorbing reality. But in those days of prosperity to the cause, there were trials; and these gradually arose in consequence of a disposition to draw off from the great truths connected with the third message, to points of no vital importance. It was impossible to make some see that present truth really was present truth, and not future truth, and that the word, as a lamp, shines brightest where we stand, and not so plainly on the path in the distance. Hence the order of events a thousand years in the future, or just before or after the coming of the Lord, was all-absorbing theme with some.   Life Incidents, page 290-292.

And so it is today. I was also caught up in a wrong focus, for a time. Researching tiny details of a future, at least 1,000 years distant! What does it matter??? I must follow Christ’s pattern and purify my character; for he will have a people “without spot or wrinkle” to stand before the throne.

Feel free to use the download page for access to all James’ writings we currently have access to. You just may find yourself delighted, as I was, to read his works; they are most compelling in the proper use of scripture.

It is with joy in my heart that we take space here, to review once again a portion of evidence, proving that Ellen was in fact a prophet of God. All too often these things are forgotten in the hurry and bustle of the day, and faith wains. God gave us powerful evidence of the most compelling type. It is left to us to use these means to grow that faith. Praise God!

James and Ellen were sent by God to New York. There, Ellen was shown about a woman who was a hypocrite. We come into the story at the point where Ellen sees this woman for the first time in real life.

I inquired concerning this person, and was informed that she appeared to be the most zealous one among them. I left the meeting with sad feelings, and returned to Brother Preston’s. That night I dreamed that a secret closet was opened to me, filled with rubbish, and I was told that it was my work to clear it out. By the light of a lamp I removed the rubbish, and told those with me that the room could be supplied with more valuable things. p. 265, Para. 2, [LS80].

“Sunday morning we met with the brethren, and my husband arose to preach on the parable of the ten virgins. He had no freedom in speaking, and proposed that we have a season of prayer. We bowed before the Lord and engaged in earnest prayer. The dark cloud was lifted, and I was taken off in vision, and again shown the case of this woman. She was represented to me as being in perfect darkness. Jesus frowned upon her and her husband. That withering frown caused me to tremble. I saw that she had acted the hypocrite, professing holiness while her heart was full of corruption. After I came out of vision I related with trembling, yet with faithfulness, what I had seen. I was severely tried, and anxious for the people of God. Would those present believe the testimony? The woman put on a calm appearance and said, ‘I am glad the Lord knows my heart. He knows that I love him.’ Then her husband rose in anger, and laying his hand on the Bible said, ‘The Bible is all we want, I shall not give up the Bible for visions.’ His wife affected to check him, saying, ‘Don’t, husband, dear, don’t talk; the Lord knows me, and will take care of it all.’ Then she vindicated herself, saying, ‘If my heart could only be opened that you might see it.’ I knew the minds of some were unsettled, whether to believe what the Lord had shown me, or let her appearance weigh against the testimony borne. Her appearance was perfectly calculated to gain their sympathy. But I had discharged a painful duty and God would take care of the result. At the close of the meeting she stated that she had no hard feelings against me, and that she should pray for me, and if I got to heaven I would see her there. We returned with Brother P.’s family, and that night the Lord met with us. I believed that the Lord would show his people the truth, and justify the vision. The neighbors said that I had abused the poor woman. p. 266, Para. 1, [LS80].

“Not long after this, terrible fear seized this woman. A horror rested upon her, and she began to confess. She even went from house to house among her unbelieving neighbors, and confessed that the man she had been living with for years was not her husband, that she ran away from England and left a kind husband and one child. She also confessed that she had professed to understand medicine, and had taken oath that the bottles of mixture she made cost her one dollar when they cost her only twelve cents, that she had taken thirty dollars from a poor man by taking a false oath. Many such wicked acts she confessed, and her repentance seemed to be genuine. In some cases she restored where she had taken away wrongfully. In one instance she started on foot forty miles to confess. We could see the hand of God in this matter. He gave her no rest day nor night, until she confessed her sins publicly. This fully justified in the minds of the brethren and those also of their neighbors who sympathized with her for a time what God had shown me of her vileness under the garb of sanctification. p. 267, Para. 1, [LS80].

God works in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform; we watch in awe.

Soon, we expect similar things to happen, as God’s people prepare for the immediate second coming of Christ. True believers do not think it will take another hundred years.

The publishing work sends out silent messengers who willingly work at any hour of the day or night. Up to the time of James’ death, it was the publishing work that was considered to be the right arm of the work.

Read carefully and prayerfully pages 99-124, and in the fear of God act a liberal part for the benefit of our publishing houses, which are the right arm of our strength. J.W. p. 192, Para. 5, [30OT].

Satan is at war with this work. Today, it is quite difficult to hold tent meetings, as the increases in the population have necessitated a corresponding increase in various regulations governing any public gatherings. This increases the importance of the publishing work.

The gospel message does not win a single soul to Christ, or make its way to a single heart, without wounding the head of Satan. Whenever a captive is wrenched from his grasp, delivered from his oppression, the tyrant is defeated. The publishing houses, the presses, are instrumentalities in God’s hand to send out to every tongue and nation the precious light of truth. This light is reaching even to heathen lands, and is constantly making inroads upon superstition and every conceivable error. p. 104, Para. 1, [30OT].

James and Ellen were a team, chosen of God to do a special work. Many SDAs overlook the importance of James; especially now so, some many years removed from the events of the beginning of the Advent movement. But God DID call James, he answered that call, and he DID write much that was published, and he DID write for our day, even in 2012! For we are called to be instructed by the church of Philadelphia, to the preparing of ourselves for the second coming, of which James’ voice is very prominent.

I saw that the Lord had blessed and strengthened my husband to labor in the field one year before; that he had made a right disposition of the means he there earned; and that he would have a hundred fold in this life, and, if faithful, a rich reward in the kingdom of God; but that the Lord would not now give him strength to labor in the field, for he had another work for him; that if he ventured into the field he would be cut down by sickness; but that he must write, write, write, and walk out by faith. He immediately commenced to write, and when he came to some difficult passage we would call upon the Lord to give us the true meaning of his word. p. 259, Para. 1, [LS80].

Discouragement pressed at times, but “God is light and in him is no darkness at all,” and he is a present help, not distant.

“The next morning, while at family prayer, I was taken off in vision and was shown concerning these matters. I saw that my husband must not give up the paper, for such a step was just what Satan was trying to drive him to take, and he was working through agents to do this. I was shown that he must continue to publish, and that the Lord would sustain him, and those who had been guilty in casting upon him such burdens would have to see the extent of their cruel course, and come back confessing their injustice, or the frown of God would rest upon them; that it was not against us merely they had spoken and acted, but against Him who had called us to fill the place he wished us to occupy, and that all their suspicions, jealousy, and secret influence which had been at work, was faithfully chronicled in heaven, and would not be blotted out until every one who had taken a part in it should see the extent of their wrong course, and retrace every step. The exposures of that journey to Vermont my husband felt for years, and were not overcome until a few years since, when the Lord mercifully healed him in answer to prayer. The brother referred to in Massachusetts, was convinced that he was wrong, and wrote a humble acknowledgement which melted us to tears. But he was not satisfied to confess with pen and ink, but came all the way to Paris, Maine, to see us, and confess his error, and our hearts were more firmly united than ever. He had been influenced by one in whom he had the utmost confidence. p. 281, Para. 1, [LS80].

This little story correctly portrays the danger of trusting in man, ANY man, no matter how well known. God is our anchor, and no man.

The slavery of the blacks to the whites in America was punished by God, through the Civil War, in part. The Advent message had it’s roots in the north-eastern portion of America. Though much of the North was generally against slavery, there were many who thought it was Ok,… even professed Advents. God had this to say about that, and the politics involved.

There are a few in the ranks of Sabbath-keepers who sympathize with the slaveholder. When they embraced the truth, they did not leave all the errors they should have left behind them. They need a more thorough draught from the cleansing fountain of truth. Some have brought along with them their old political prejudices, which are not in harmony with the principles of the truth. They maintain that the slave is the property of the master, and should not be taken from him. They rank these slaves as cattle, and say that it is wronging the owner just as much to deprive him of his slaves, as to take away his cattle. I was shown it mattered not how much the master had paid for human flesh and souls of men; God gives him no title to human souls, and he has no right to hold them as his property. Christ died for the whole human family, whether white or black. God has made man a free moral agent, whether white or black. The institution of slavery does this away, and man exercises the power over his fellow-man which God has never granted him, and which belongs alone to God. The slave-master has dared to assume the responsibility of God over his slave, and accordingly the sins, ignorance and vice of the slave he will be accountable for. He will be called to an account for the power he exercises over the slave. The colored race are God’s property. Their Maker alone is their master, and those who have dared to chain down the body and the soul of the slave, and have kept him in degradation like the brute creation, will have their retribution. The wrath of God has slumbered, but will awake, and be poured out without mixture of mercy. p. 3, Para. 2, [9OT].
Some have been so indiscreet, they have talked out their pro-slavery principles, which principles are not heavenborn, but proceed from the dominion of Satan. These restless spirits must talk and act in a manner to bring a reproach upon the cause of God. I will here give a copy of a letter written to Bro. A. R., of Oswego co., N. Y. p. 3, Para. 3, [9OT].
“I was shown some things in regard to you. I saw that you was deceived in regard to yourself. You have given occasion for the enemies of our faith to blaspheme, and to reproach Sabbath-keepers. By your indiscreet course, you have closed the ears of some who would have listened to the truth. I saw that we should be as wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. You have manifested neither the wisdom of the serpent, nor the harmlessness of the dove. p. 4, Para. 1, [9OT].
“Satan was the first great leader in rebellion. God is punishing the North, that they have so long suffered to exist the accursed sin of slavery for in the sight of heaven it is a sin of the darkest dye. God is not with the South, and he will punish them dreadfully in the end. Satan is at the bottom of all rebellion. You, I saw, Bro. R., have permitted your political principles to destroy your judgment, and your love for the truth. They are eating out true godliness from your heart. You never have looked upon slavery in the right light, and your views of this matter have thrown you on the side of the rebellion, which Satan and his host have stirred up. Your views of slavery, and the sacred, important truths for this time, cannot harmonize. You must yield your views, or the truth. Both cannot be cherished in the same heart, for they are at war with each other. p. 4, Para. 2, [9OT].
“Satan has been stirring you up. He would not let you rest until you should express your sentiments upon the side of the powers of darkness,–strengthening the hands of the wicked whom God has cursed. You have cast your influence on the wrong side, with those whose course of life is to sow thorns, and plant misery for others. I saw you casting your influence with a degraded company,–a God-forsaken company, and angels of God fled from you in disgust. I saw you was utterly deceived. Had you followed the light God has given you; had you heeded the instructions of your brethren; had you listened to their advice, you would have saved yourself, saved the precious cause of truth, from reproach. But as you have given publicity to your sentiments, notwithstanding all the light given, it will be the duty of God’s people, unless you undo what you have done, to publicly withdraw their sympathy and fellowship from you, in order to save the impression which must go out in regard to us as a people. We must let it be known that we have no such ones in our fellowship, and will not walk with them in church capacity. p. 4, Para. 3, [9OT].
“You have lost the sanctifying influence of the truth. You have lost your connection with the heavenly host. You have allied yourself with the first great rebel, and God’s wrath is upon you; for his sacred cause is reproached, and the truth is made disgusting to unbelievers. You have grieved God’s people, despised the counsel and advice of his ambassadors upon earth, who labor together with God, and are in Christ’s stead beseeching souls to be reconciled to God. p. 5, Para. 1, [9OT].
“As a people, I was shown we cannot be too careful what influence we exert; and we should watch every word. When we by word or act place ourselves upon the enemy’s battleground, we drive holy angels from us, and encourage and attract evil angels in crowds around us. This you have done, Bro. R., and by your unguarded, willful course have caused unbelievers to look upon Sabbath-keepers all around you with suspicion. These words were presented before me as referring to the servants of God: ‘He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth me: and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me.‘ p. 5, Para. 2, [9OT].
“May God help you, my deceived brother, to see yourself as you are, and have your sympathies with the body.” p. 5, Para. 3, [9OT].
Our kingdom is not of this world. We are waiting for our Lord from heaven to come to earth to put down all authority and power, and set up his everlasting kingdom. Earthly powers are shaken. We need not, and cannot, expect union among the nations of the earth. Our position in the image of Nebuchadnezzar is represented by the toes, in a divided state, and of a crumbling material, that will not hold together. Prophecy shows us that the great day of God is right upon us. It hasteth greatly. p. 6, Para. 1, [9OT].

Politics. It’s one of those “things” you are supposed to stay away from,… like religion. Since we deal with the other, today we deal with the one.

In the counterfeit SOP is an interesting statement I find to be quite counter to many other quotes in the counterfeit. Here is the statement.

Dear youth, what is the aim and purpose of your life? Are you ambitious for education that you may have a name and position in the world? Have you thoughts that you dare not express, that you may one day stand upon the summit of intellectual greatness; that you may sit in deliberative and legislative councils, and help to enact laws for the nation? There is nothing wrong in these aspirations. You may every one of you make your mark. You should be content with no mean attainments. Aim high, and spare no pains to reach the standard. RH, August 19, 1884 par. 3

Like all of Satan’s devices, and this being no exception, it sounds like a good thing; until examined in the light of truth. We will get to that in a moment. First, here is some interesting information from the rest of the counterfeit SOP.

This passage is used once more, before the death of Ellen, and four more times after, in various books. In the Testimonies reference to political things seems rather rare. We have touched on part of this before, here.

Elsewhere in the counterfeit, there are 43 hits on “politics” and 18 hits on “voting,” from the White Estate CD. The striking difference here, is there is little, to no, support for involvement in politics. The little comes from the temperance movement.

Here is the truth.

If L—- neglects to become acquainted with religious subjects and practical Christianity, his life will be a mistake. He should see that he needs an education in spiritual and divine things, that he may use his abilities wholly for God. The Lord calls for young men to work in his vineyard. Young men should not neglect the essential branches of education. But if they turn their entire attention to secular study, and neglect to become intelligent on the great subject of religion, and do not acquire a Christian experience, they are becoming disqualified for the work of God. p. 159, Para. 3, [26OT].
Young men should devote much time to study, but they should also unite physical labor with their mental efforts, and put in practice the knowledge they have gained. That all the faculties of the mind, and powers of the body may be equally developed by useful exercise. But they should not neglect the things necessary to salvation, nor consider them secondary to anything in this life. p. 160, Para. 2, [26OT].

Usually politics becomes rather absorbing for those who dabble in it. Satan uses anything, to distract us, take up our time, prevent us from entering the mysteries of godliness.

Bro. —-, encourage simplicity, love, forbearance, and sweet union with your brethren. But do not, oh! do not, sell everlasting life so cheaply. You will never know real happiness if you go from the truth. You will be miserable indeed. Heaven is worth making any and every sacrifice for. Break the bands of Satan. Jesus is now inviting you. Will you listen to his voice? You must take a higher stand than you have hitherto done. Make the kingdom of Heaven, and the righteousness of Christ, your first business. Live for God and Heaven, and the eternal reward will be yours at the end of the race. p. 33, Para. 3, [17OT].
The Lord will not commit to your trust any larger work until the work now before you has been seen and performed with a ready, cheerful will. Unless the heart is put into the work, it will drag heavily, whatever that work may be. The Lord tests our ability by giving us small duties to perform first. If we turn from these with dissatisfaction and murmuring, no more will be entrusted to us until we take right hold cheerfully of these small duties, and do them well; then, higher and greater responsibilities will be committed to us. p. 68, Para. 1, [17OT].
They have no disposition to make it their highest object to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; hence, godliness is a hidden mystery to them–they cannot understand it. They know not Christ by experimental knowledge. Let men and women who are satisfied with their dwarfed, crippled condition in divine things, be suddenly transported to Heaven, and for an instant witness the high, holy state of perfection that ever abides there,–every soul filled with love; joy beaming from every countenance; the high melodious strains of enchanting music in honor of God and the Lamb; the ceaseless streams of light that flow from the face of him who sitteth upon the throne, and from the Lamb, upon the faces of his saints; and yet higher and greater joy to experience (for the more they receive and exercise the enjoyment of God, the more is their capacity increased to bear more, to rise higher in eternal, immortal enjoyment, and thus continue to receive new and greater supplies from the ceaseless sources of glory and bliss inexpressible);— and could such persons mingle with the heavenly throng, participate in their songs, and endure the high, pure, exalted, spiritual, transporting glory that emanates from God and the Lamb? Oh, no! their probation was lengthened for years that they might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But they had a selfish business of their own to engage the powers of their minds, and the energies of their beings. They could not afford to serve God unreservedly, and make this a business. Worldly enterprises must come first, and take the best of their powers, and a transient thought is devoted to God. Are such to be transformed after the final decision, He that is holy, let him be holy still, he that is filthy, let him be filthy still? Such a time is coming. p. 88, Para. 3, [17OT].

The short of all this, is that if you become a Christian, a pilgrim and a stranger, you become an alien to this world, and it is no longer your home.
Here is what we are told to do.

And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. Jeremiah 29:7
