Angels are men, represented so in several places in the Bible. Our topic of yesterday, looking deeper into this through some Matthew 13 parables, has been consuming my thinkspace. After coming to the conclusion that the people who are truly giving the third angel’s message, are also the reapers, are also the gatherers, are also the severers, and that “the end,” spoken of throughout this chapter of Matthew’s, is also the same of Matthew 24:14, is also that same “short period” time of trouble, which has now lasted over 150 years, we need to ask, “What now?” and “How does this change anything?”

A: I don’t think it really “changes” anything. I can testify, however, that these understandings have brought a great deal more clarity to the big picture as to what has been happening in the past, what is happening now, and things we can expect to happen in the very near future.

Please review the pertinent texts from Matthew 13. One of the stated purposes of the authenticated Spirit of Prophecy is to point us to a correct understanding of the Bible. Some choose not to accept these understandings. Again, Matthew 13:13-15 tells us exactly what is the problem there.

But for God’s true people, “it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.” Therefore, we accept the testimony of Jesus, given us, to help us, who, living in these last days of earth’s history, need every ray of light God is pleased to shine on our path. We gather these up and cherish them. Here is our pearl of great price!

When I heard about the original writings, I was … well, … I had to give it some thought. Then I decided to check it out. The moment I saw the physical, original Testimonies, I knew this was real. I spent over $8,000.00 in that first year, sending out books to people I knew. When God gave me an opportunity to bid on an original, first edition 1858 Great Controversy, I put up all I could possibly afford in the short time I had. God in mercy held back others, and it only cost $400.00.

I see these parables about the angels of Matthew 13, in their different roles, reapers, gatherers and severers, as testifying to an importance of the revival of the living testimony in God’s church.

In researching this aspect, I came across such a huge amount of information, it fully encompasses the entirety of the Spirit of Prophecy. Going back to No. 20, pages 42-49, is where the place of the Spirit of Prophecy is defined, and on page 47, begins a pointed message to Ellen. Here it is.

One stood by my side, and said, God has raised you up, and has given you words to speak to the people and reach hearts, that he has given to no other one. He has shaped your testimonies to meet cases that are in need of help. You must be unmoved by scorn, derision, reproach, and censure. In order to be God’s special instrument, you should lean to no one, but hang upon him alone, and, like the clinging vine, let your tendrils entwine about him. He will make you a means through which to communicate his light to the people. You must gather strength from God daily, in order to be fortified, that your surroundings may not dim or eclipse the light that he has permitted to shine upon his people through you. It is Satan’s special object to prevent this light from coming to the people of God, who so greatly need it amid the perils of these last days. p. 47, Para. 2, [20OT].
Your success is in your simplicity. As soon as you depart from this, and fashion your testimony to meet the minds of any, your power is gone. Almost everything in this age is glossed and unreal. The world abounds in testimonies given to please and charm for the moment, and to exalt self. Your testimony is of a different character. It is to come down to the minutiae of life, keeping the feeble faith from dying, and pressing home upon believers the necessity of shining as light in the world. p. 48, Para. 1, [20OT].
Your testimony God has given you, to set before the backslider and the sinner his true condition, and the immense loss he is sustaining by continuing a life of sin. God has impressed this upon you by opening it before your vision as he has to no one now living, and, according to the light he has given you, will he hold you responsible. Not by might, nor by power; but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. Lift up your voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgressions, and the house of Israel their sins. p. 48, Para. 2, [20OT].

At this point in my study, I believe these words apply to God’s true church in it’s entirety, as a body. This is the revival of the living testimony, for the purpose of purging from Zion the sinners. This is intimately involved with the “slaughtering” of Ezekiel 9. You will remember that James and Ellen were chastised for “cutting and slashing” the members. (p. 58, Para. 2, [13OT].)

This was the very work of Christ while on earth.

I was then shown that Satan and his angels were very busy during CHRIST’S ministry, inspiring men with unbelief, hate and scorn. Often when JESUS uttered some cutting truth reproving their sins, they would become enraged. p. 36, Para. 1, [GC58].

This increased clarity should bring an increased understanding of what we, as God’s people, need to be doing. All of this is much like a diamond, though it is one, yet, properly cut, it has 64 facets, each one reflecting the light of Christ.

GOD had a message for the church that was sacred and important. If received, it would make a thorough reformation in the church, revive the living testimony that would purge out hypocrites and sinners, and bring the church again into favor with GOD. p. 127, Para. 1, [GC58].

This is all very closely connected with the great anti-typical Day of Atonement, in this way. All who would not participate in the services of the day were to be put out of the camp, cut off from God’s people. (Leviticus 23:29)

At this point we will post this counsel, warning, reproof and rebuke to the church.

I have been shown that all are not fitted to correct the erring. p. 26, Para. 1, [23OT].

Much more on this, ahead.

Remember the “angels are men” post?  Here is another one for you to consider, from Matthew.

the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels [saints]  shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I would say that God’s “end” is much different than man’s “end.” Remember, Matthew 42:14? I would also say that God’s idea of “who’s who” is different from ours.

I then saw the third angel. Said my accompanying angel, “Fearful is his work. Awful is his mission. He is the angel [saints] that is to select the wheat from the tares, and seal or bind the wheat for the heavenly garner. These things should engross the whole mind, the whole attention.” p. 38, Para. 3, [SUPCEV].

As with all important things,… there is more.

“and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Since the time of the end started October 22, 1844, we now gain a new understanding of the third angel’s message. This makes the application of Joel 2 that much more important. Here are just a few excerpts.

“a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

What a description of God’s people! Notice that in the 1858 Great Controversy, p. 185, God is making the same connection for us, “They moved in exact order, firm like a company of soldiers.”

But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in [notice that the word here is “in”]  them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the Lord hath spoken it. Obadiah

And who is this,… mount Zion???

They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. Psalm 125:1

No wonder then, that, there, shall be deliverance, shall be holiness; for our God is a consuming fire; his people will “kindle” among those who rejected their birthright; the loud cry will go like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble; is not Esau stubble?

I believe that we can safely say that the term “fire” does not mean literal fire, but spiritual. This would also be true for the “slaughtering” of Ezekiel 9, worked out by the six angels, which we think are the angels of the churches of Revelation 2 and 3, minus Laodicea. (Click on the topic of Ezekiel 9 to read more.) This would also be true of the term “mount Zion,” for God’s people are not literal mountains. All these things are illustrative of truth, from God’s perspective.

And why is it that these things are not common knowledge?; why was I not taught this as a child?

And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

What a thrill to study pure truth, every word can be counted true, every thought picture developed, sanctified by truth; an anchor for the soul, a rock that never moves, this the Word of God! PRAISE HIS NAME!

We see that Adam and Eve meditated. p. 25, Para. 1, [1SP].

Enoch separated himself from society so he could meditate. p. 62, Para. 1, [1SP].

The Sabbath has been set apart for meditation. p. 225, Para. 2, [1SP].

Even Moses could not go up at once into the mount; for he could not immediately approach so nigh unto God, and endure the exhibitions of his glory. Six days he was preparing to meet with God. His common thoughts and feelings must be put away. During six days he was devoting his thoughts to God, and sanctifying himself by meditation and prayer, before he could be prepared to converse with God. p. 242, Para. 1, [1SP].

Joshua separated himself to meditate and pray before the battle of Jericho, which is where he met Christ.  p. 347, Para. 3, [1SP].

David wrote psalms to express his meditations. p. 386, Para. 1, [1SP].

Many who attend meetings of devotion, and have been instructed by the servants of God, and been greatly refreshed and blessed in seeking Jesus, have returned to their homes no better than they left them, because they did not feel the importance of praying and watching thereunto, as they returned to their homes. They frequently feel inclined to complain of others, because they realize their loss. Some murmur against God, and do not reproach themselves as being the cause of their own darkness, and sufferings of mind. These should not reflect upon others. The fault is in themselves. They talked and jested, and visited away the heavenly Guest, and themselves they have only to blame. It is the privilege of all to retain Jesus with them. If they do this, their words must be select, seasoned with grace. The thoughts of their hearts must be disciplined to meditate upon heavenly and divine things. p. 38, Para. 1, [2SP].

John did not feel strong enough to stand the great pressure of temptation he would meet in society. He feared his character would be molded according to the prevailing customs of the Jews, [Seventh-Day Adventists] and he chose the wilderness as his school,  in which his mind could be properly educated and disciplined from God’s great book of nature. In the wilderness, John could the more readily deny himself and bring his appetite under control [health reform], and dress in accordance to natural simplicity [dress reform]. And there was nothing in the wilderness that would take his mind from meditation and prayer. Satan had access to John, even after he had closed every avenue in his power through which he would enter. But his habits of life were so pure and natural that he could discern the foe, and had strength of spirit and decision of character to resist him. p. 47, Para. 1, [2SP].

What interests me here is that John is a representative of the 144,000. Notice where he is living. Notice that there is no TV to take his mind from meditation or prayer.

If we were to draw some lines from his time to ours. What would all that look like? Now this might be a good subject for some meditation.

In discussing meditation we present the following, which just might be a good starting place for the interested ones. This is a part of the story of James and Ellen’s travels to help grow the church in the early days.

I will strongly urge you to read a few more pages, as the two men brought to view here, are further addressed, showing more of their errors and their satanic connection. This will quite probably remind you of some of the other fanaticisms you have come across in your past.

“But we were now pleased to learn that there was a little company here who believed that in their past experience they had been led by the providence of God. We were directed to Elders Bennett and Bellings as persons holding similar views with ourselves. We discovered that there was much prejudice against these men, but concluded that they were persecuted for righteousness’ sake. We called on them and were kindly received and courteously treated. We soon learned that they professed sanctification, claiming they were above the possibility of sin, being entirely consecrated to God. Their clothing was excellent, and they had an air of ease and comfort. p. 206, Para. 3, [LS80].
“Presently a little boy about eight years old entered, literally clad in dirty rags. We were surprised to find that this little specimen of neglect was the son of Elder Bennett. The mother looked exceedingly ashamed and annoyed; but the father, utterly unconcerned, continued talking of his high spiritual attainments without the slightest recognition of his little son. But his sanctification had suddenly lost its charm in my eyes. Wrapped in prayer and meditation, throwing off all the toil and responsibilities of life, this man seemed too spiritually minded to notice the actual wants of his family, or give his children the least fatherly attention.

We might inject here the somewheretimes often heard phrase, “He’s so heavenly minded, he’s no earthly good.” Said in derision of the saints sharing their faith.

He seemed to forget that the greater our love to God, the stronger should be our love and care for those whom he has given us; that the Saviour never taught idleness and abstract devotion, to the neglect of the duties laying directly in our path. p. 207, Para. 1, [LS80].
“This husband and father declared that the heavenly attainment of true holiness carried the mind above all earthly thoughts. Still he sat at the table and ate temporal food; he was not fed by a miracle, and someone must provide that food, although he troubled himself little about that matter, his time was so devoted to spiritual things. Not so his wife, upon whom rested the burden of the family. She toiled unremittingly in every department of household labor to keep up the home. The husband declared that she was not sanctified, but allowed worldly things to draw her mind from religious subjects. p. 207, Para. 2, [LS80].
“I thought of our Saviour as a constant worker for the good of others. He said ‘My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.’ The sanctification that he taught was shown in deeds of kindness and mercy, and the love that counteth others better than themselves. p. 207, Para. 3, [LS80].

I really like the balance here shown. No man or woman, disregarding the plain duties of life, is fit to stand to instruct anyone. This is very closely associated to the “no work” fanaticism. As more truth comes out about the great anti-typical Day of Atonement, and people become convicted about the doing “no servile work” part, some may be pushed by Satan into thinking they should not work at all, which is wrong.

We have a pattern, it is Christ the Lord. Follow him.

God Bless your following

In life, there are moments when truth is revealed. Not all receive it.

It is my opinion that this is one of those moments. This video was posted yesterday at ZeroHedge, in which a trader from across the pond is talking about the Euro. His comments are very revealing and should be heeded.

Then there is this French financial consultant firm, that has been making these public announcements once a month, since February 2006, that have also been very revealing. They felt a call to social duty, to make public their findings so that those who listen can prepare, as best they can.

In their latest public announcement, November is when the pain is to become severe in the USA. You might like to read this and make some comparisons to the video.

Your Mileage May Vary.

In the Testimonies there are 68 times some form of the word “meditate” is used. Six of these are direct quotes from the Bible. This leaves us with 62 admonitions, in one form or another, to meditate, making an average of two per number of the Testimonies.

Usually we associate the repetition of instruction as being an emphasis on said instruction. But for some reason it is not so with this particular instruction.

Here is an example.

“As the work [of publishing] increases, the greater the necessity for thorough trust and dependence on God and a thorough interest in, and devotion to the work. Selfish interests should be laid aside. There should be much prayer, much meditation, for this is highly necessary for the success and prosperity of the work. A spirit or traffic should not be allowed in any one who is connected with the work in the Office. If it is permitted, the work will be neglected and marred. Common things will be placed too much upon a level with sacred things. p. 25, Para. 2, [13OT].

I have never, ever heard anyone discuss or even broach the subject of meditation. But God is telling us that it “is highly necessary for the success and prosperity of the work.” Is no one listening?

Empirically, the evidence suggests that Satan just may have some special focus against the practice of this spiritual exercise.

I am going to cut this one short, right here, so you can snatch some time to meditate on it.

God Bless your meditation

In this passage we have the story of the meeting of Ellen and Joseph Bates. I thought to leave it a little large to get the full story. We will be dealing with the last sentence.

“While on a visit to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1846, I became acquainted with Elder Joseph Bates. He had early embraced the Advent faith, and was an active laborer in the cause. I found him to be a true Christian gentleman, courteous and kind. He treated me as tenderly as though I were his own child. The first time he heard me speak, he manifested deep interest. After I had ceased speaking he arose and said, ‘I am a doubting Thomas. I do not believe in visions. But if I could believe that the testimony the sister has related tonight was indeed the voice of God to us, I should be the happiest man alive. My heart is deeply moved. I believe the speaker to be sincere, but cannot explain in regard to her being shown the wonderful things she has related to us.’ p. 236, Para. 2, [LS80]. “Elder Bates was keeping the Sabbath, and urged its importance. I did not feel its importance, and thought that Elder B. erred in dwelling upon the fourth commandment more than upon the other nine. But the Lord gave me a view of the heavenly sanctuary. The temple of God was opened in heaven, and I was shown the ark of God covered with the mercy seat. Two angels stood one at either end of the ark, with their wings spread over the mercy seat, and their faces turned toward it. This my accompanying angel informed me represented all the heavenly host looking with reverential awe toward the law of God which had been written by the finger of God. Jesus raised the cover of the ark, and I beheld the tables of stone on which the ten commandments were written. I was amazed as I saw the fourth commandment in the very center of the ten precepts, with a soft halo of light encircling it. Said the angel, ‘It is the only one of the ten which defines the living God who created the heavens and the earth and all things that are therein. When the foundations of the earth were laid, then was also laid the foundation of the Sabbath. I was shown that if the true Sabbath had been kept there would never have been an infidel or an atheist. The observance of the Sabbath would have preserved the world from idolatry. The fourth commandment has been trampled upon, therefore we are called upon to repair the breach in the law and plead for the broken down Sabbath. The man of sin who exalted himself above God, and thought to change times and laws, brought about the change of the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week. In doing this he made a breach in the law of God. Just prior to the great day of God, a message is sent forth to warn the people to come back to their allegiance to the law of God which antichrist has broken down. Attention must be called to the breach in the law by precept and example. I was shown that the third angel proclaiming the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, represents the people who receive this message and raise the voice of warning to the world, to keep the commandments of God and his law as the apple of the eye, and that in response to this warning many would embrace the Sabbath of the Lord.” p. 236, Para. 3, [LS80].

The interesting thing here is, we have a positive ID on just who is the third angel. What about the other angels?

JESUS commissioned other angels to fly quickly to revive and strengthen the drooping faith of his people, and prepare them to understand the message of the second angel, and of the important move which was soon to be made in heaven. p. 154, Para. 2, [GC58].

A careful reading, in context, might show that these angels also represent people.

JESUS sent his angels to direct the disappointed ones, to lead their minds into the Most Holy place where he had gone to cleanse the Sanctuary, and make a special atonement for Israel. p. 157, Para. 1, [GC58].

This looks to me like Hiram Edson and his vision in the cornfield.

Angels were sent to aid the mighty angel from heaven, and I heard voices which seemed to sound everywhere, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues; for her sins have reached unto heaven, and GOD hath remembered her iniquities. This message seemed to be an addition to the third message, and joined it, as the midnight cry joined the second angel’s message in 1844. The glory of GOD rested upon the patient, waiting saints, and they fearlessly gave the last solemn warning, proclaiming the fall of Babylon, and calling upon GOD’S people to come out of her; that they might escape her fearful doom. p. 194, Para. 1, [GC58].

In the above we have the angels defined. It is found in the last sentence. But, we will show another passage that gives a pointed message.

The conflict is between the requirements of God and the requirements of the beast. The first day, a Papal institution which directly contradicts the fourth commandment, is yet to be made a test by the two-horned beast. And then the fearful warning from God declares the penalty of bowing to the beast and his image. They shall drink the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation. p. 54, Para. 4, [6OT].

It looks to me like the fearful warning is the same thing as the last solemn warning. It will be given by men, not angels.

Sinners, who are perishing for lack of knowledge, must be left in ignorance and darkness, unless men shall carry to them the light of truth. God will not send angels from Heaven to do the work which he has left for man. p. 88, Para. 1, [24OT].

God Bless your angelic labors

Sunday September 25, 2011

We have duty before us. The time is short. If I fail to perfect my character for Heaven, it will be my own fault. I am given opportunities to bless those who come, in God’s providence, within my influence.

Many misunderstand the object for which they were created. It was to bless humanity and glorify God rather than to enjoy and glorify self. p. 144, Para. 1, [28OT].

The great question is, “What will be my acts?”

Sr. _____, you never can be of use in the world, unless your purposes are strong enough to enable you to overcome this unwillingness to take care, and bear burdens. As you exercise the forces within you daily, you will find the task less difficult, until duty, and diligence, and care, will become second nature. You can accustom yourself to think, when you lay less burden upon your stomach. This burden taxes the brain. p. 110, Para. 1, [18OT].
Also you should have an aim, a purpose in life. Where there is no purpose, there is a disposition to indolence; but where there is an object in view, of sufficient importance, all the powers of the mind will come into spontaneous activity. In order to make life a success, the thoughts must be steadily fixed upon the object of life, and not left to wander off, and be occupied with unimportant things, or to be satisfied with idle musings, which is the fruit of shunning responsibility. Castlebuilding will deprave the mind. p. 110, Para. 2, [18OT].
Take up present duty. Do it with a will, with all the heart. You should resolve to do something which will require an effort of the brain-powers, as well as the physical. Your heart should be in your present labor, and your present work. p. 110, Para. 3, [18OT].
The duty now before you is the very work Heaven wishes you to do. To dream of a work far off, and imagine and plan in regard to the future, will prove unprofitable, and unfit you for the work, small though it may be, which Heaven now places before you. It should not be your study to do some great work, but to do cheerfully the work which you see to do today, and to do it well. Talents are entrusted to your care, to be doubled. You are responsible for their proper use, or their abuse. You are not to aspire after great things, in order to do great service; but to do your little work. Improve your talents, even though are they are few, with a sense of responsibility for their right use, in the sight of God. p. 111, Para. 1, [18OT]. You need not expect to avoid pain and weariness in the toils and trials of life. The Son of God was partaker of the human frame. He was frequently wearied in body and spirit. Said he, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day; the night cometh when no man can work.” p. 111, Para. 2, [18OT].
You should cease your far-off dreaming, and bring your mind to present duties, and cheerfully perform them. p. 111, Para. 3, [18OT].
This world is not the Christian’s Heaven. It is merely the fitting-up place. It is the scene of our life-battles, conflicts, and sorrows; and it is important that we all have a firm grasp of the better world, where there is peace, joy, and bliss, to be enjoyed forever, when the warfare is ended. p. 111, Para. 4, [18OT].
Those who engage in the work of doing good to others, so far as it is possible, by giving practical demonstration of their interest in them, are not only relieving the ills of human life in helping them bear their burdens, but are at the same time contributing largely to their own health of soul and body. Doing good is employment that will benefit both giver and receiver. If self is forgotten in the interest you take in others, and your thoughts are prevented from being absorbed in yourself, a victory is gained over your infirmities. The satisfaction you will realize in doing good will aid you greatly in the recovery of the healthy tone of the imagination. The pleasure of doing good animates the mind and vibrates through the whole body. While the faces of benevolent men are lighted up with cheerfulness, and their countenances express the moral elevation of the mind, those of selfish, stingy men are dejected, cast down, and gloomy. Their moral defects are seen in their countenances. Selfishness and self-love have enstamped their own images upon the outward man. The man or woman who is actuated by true disinterested benevolence, is a partaker of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust; while the avaricious and selfish have cherished their selfishness, until their social sympathies have become dried and withered, and their countenances express the image of the fallen foe, rather than that of purity and holiness. p. 45, Para. 1, [19OT].
None are living Christians unless they have a daily experience in the things of God, and daily practice self-denial, cheerfully bearing the cross and following Christ. Every living Christian will advance daily in the divine life. As he advances daily toward perfection, he experiences a conversion to God every day; and this conversion is not completed until perfection of Christian character is attained, and a full preparation for the finishing touch of immortality. God should be the highest object of our thoughts. Meditating upon him, and pleading with him, elevates the soul, and quickens the affections. A neglect of meditation and prayer will surely result in a declension in religious interests. Then will be seen carelessness and slothfulness. p. 9, Para. 2, [19OT].
Religion is not emotion of feeling merely. It is a principle which is interwoven with all the daily duties and transactions of life. Nothing will be entertained, no business engaged in, which will prevent the accompaniment of this principle. To retain pure and undefiled religion, it is necessary to be workers, persevering in effort. We must do something ourselves. None can do our work. None can work out our salvation with fear and trembling, but ourselves. This is the very work the Lord has left for us to do. p. 10, Para. 1, [19OT].

But, of course, this is where the proverbial “rubber meets the road,” for now you must act, you must do your part which God has left for you to do. Failure to act and do your part is, in fact, faith without works.

God has not apportioned you your lot, to merely watch over and care for yourselves. You are required to minister to, and watch over, others, and in this exercise you will develop your errors, that you may correct them, and will strengthen the weak points in your character that need strengthening. p. 71, Para. 1, [16OT].

Failing to do duty is choosing not to go to Heaven.

It’s not always easy to help out someone who does not deserve to be helped, despises what you do to help, especially if it’s menial, like carrying out the trash. I helped out at a place, once upon a time, washing dishes, mopping the floor, &c. My opinions were not regarded well, I was looked down upon. The one bright spot was when I heard through the grapevine that someone had asked about me, “Does he LIKE to do the dishes?”

God Bless your humble labor to perfection

Certain ideas of freedom are deeply rooted in the American psyche. Now this may be true of others around the globe too, however, I am most familiar with my home country.

The very idea of having someone over you as a tyrant, ordering your every move, is disgusting. But because sin is so pleasing to the unconverted heart, it becomes easy to start sliding down that horrible slope to perdition.

Spiritualism, while it still can be found in it old form, has taken on new clothes. It is dressed up to be chic, in a thousand ways, all leading to death. Somewhere along the way you will loose control to a tyrant, Satan.

But you have lost your first love. God now calls upon you to repent, to be zealous in the work. Your eternal happiness will be determined by the course you now pursue. Can you reject the invitations of mercy now offered? Can you choose your own way? Will you cherish pride and vanity, and lose your soul at last? The word of God plainly tells us how few will be saved, and that the greatest number of even those who are called, will prove themselves unworthy of everlasting life. They will have no part in Heaven, but will have their portion with Satan, and experience the second death. p. 121, Para. 3, [17OT].
Men and women may escape this doom if they will. It is true, Satan is the great originator of sin; yet this does not excuse any man for sinning; for he cannot force men to do evil. He tempts them to it, and makes sin look enticing and pleasant; but he has to leave it to their own wills whether they will do it or not. He does not force men to become intoxicated, neither does he take hold of them, and compel them by force to remain away from religious meetings; but he will present temptations in a manner to allure to evil, and man is a free moral agent to accept or refuse. p. 122, Para. 1, [17OT].

We can go too far.

Satan has taken advantage of these popular fables to hide himself. He comes to poor, deceived, mortals, through modern Spiritualism, which places no bounds to the carnally-minded, and if carried out, separates families, creates jealousy and hatred, and gives liberty to the most degrading propensities. People know but little, yet, of the corrupting influence of Spiritualism. The curtain was lifted, and much of its dreadful work was revealed to me. I was shown some who have had an experience in Spiritualism, and have since renounced it, who shudder as they reflect upon how near they came to utter ruin. They had lost control of themselves, and Satan made them do that which they detested. But even they have but a faint idea of Spiritualism as it is. p. 102, Para. 2, [8OT].

Ministers inspired of Satan can eloquently dress up this hideous monster, hide its deformity, and make it appear beautiful to many. But it comes so direct from his Satanic majesty, that all who have to do with it, he claims as his to control, for they have ventured upon forbidden ground, and have forfeited the protection of their Maker. p. 102, Para. 3, [8OT].

Last night I was looking over some things in the Bible and came again to the book of Jonah. It seems that this book is applicable to the SDA church today.

You will remember that Jonah was sent to Nineveh to “cry against it.” Looking up Nineveh in my bible dictionary I find that the first line reads, “The ancient capital of Assyria.” So this is Babylon that Jonah is being sent to. Just like the SDA church was sent to modern Babylon, to cry against it, only instead of keeping the torch lit, the church has made friends with them.

I believe this is where Obadiah 1:7 will be fulfilled. “The men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee.” As we move into the continuing collapse of America, incredible pressure will mount to “do something.” We think this will result in Sunday being made a test. When that happens, something will have to happen the name Seventh-Day, for it is hated.

At this point I wish to call your attention to a dream from No. 13.

In this state of things we decided to return to Battle Creek, and there remain while the roads were in a muddy, broken-up condition, and I there complete No. 12. My husband was very anxious to see his brethren at Battle Creek, and speak to them, and rejoice with them in the work God was doing for him. I gathered up my writings and we started on our journey. On the way we held two meetings in Orange, and had evidence that the church was profited and encouraged. We were ourselves refreshed by the Spirit of the Lord. That night I dreamed I was in Battle Creek looking out from the side glass at the door, and saw a company marching up to the house, two and two. They looked stern and determined. I knew them well and turned to open the parlor door to receive them, but thought I would look again. The scene was changed. The appearance now presented was like a Catholic procession. One of the company bore in his hand a cross. Another had a reed. And as they neared the house, the one carrying a reed made a circle around the house, saying three times, “This house is proscribed. The goods must be confiscated. [The only ‘goods’ were the books of the Spirit of Prophecy, and it is they that have ‘spoken’ out against evil] They have spoken against our holy order.” Terror seized me, and I ran through the house, out of the north door, and found myself in the midst of a company some of whom I knew, but I dared not speak a word with them for fear of being betrayed. I tried to seek a retired spot where I might weep and pray without meeting eager, inquisitive eyes everywhere I turned. I repeated frequently, “If I could only understand this! If they will tell me what I have said, or what I have done!” I wept and prayed much as I saw our goods being confiscated. I tried to read sympathy or pity for me in the looks of those around me, and marked several countenances of those whom I thought would speak with me, and comfort me, if they did not fear that they would be observed by others. I made one attempt to escape from the crowd, but I saw that I was watched, and I concealed my intentions. I commenced weeping aloud, and saying, “If they would only tell me what I have done, or what I have said!” p. 12, Para. 1, [13OT].
My husband, who was sleeping in a bed in the same room, heard me weeping aloud, and awoke me. I found my pillow wet with tears, and a sad depression of spirits upon me. p. 13, Para. 1, [13OT].

Satan hates the true, authenticated Spirit of Prophecy also. He has done his best to kill it off, but PRAISE GOD! for his mercy in preserving what was needed to get God’s people through. It is not for nothing that the difference between the authenticated and the counterfeit has come to light. It is in God’s providence.

This from the 1919 Bible Conference research paper by Bert Haloviak, In the Shadow of the ‘Daily’: … page 24.

In 1918 Stephen Haskell recalled a conversation with Mrs. White some 40 [1878] years previous. According to Haskell, Mrs. White predicted a time when the testimonies would be in demand “just as they were originally given in order to meet objections before we got through.”
