Ezekiel 9 – Part 2

Some very interesting connections have come to light.

In this part we are going to be looking at Testimonies for the Church, No. 23. I strongly suggest you get out your copy or download it from the link provided. It’s important. Also, if you are just coming in on this blog, please check out the previous posts, they just may answer some important questions you will have. All emphasis mine unless otherwise stated.

The portion that deals with Ezekiel 9 is found on pages 22 – 23. What makes this particular connection so interestingly amazing to me is the context. This context starts on page one (1) and continues to page 57!

The items included in this context reads like a who’s who list of important points about the Advent message. We will take a look first at the Ezekiel 9 material. Here is the first paragraph.

The true people of God, who have the spirit of the work of the Lord and the salvation of souls at heart, will ever view sin in its real, sinful character. They will always be on the side of faithful and plain dealing with sins which easily beset the people of God.

Here the true church of God is identified by certain characteristics they have.

Especially in the closing work for the church, in the sealing time of the one hundred and forty-four thousand, who are to stand without fault before the throne of God, will they feel most deeply the wrongs of God’s professed people.

Ok, so in part 1 we identified a key phrase about the third angel’s message, it is “the last great work.” In the above phrase we have a further confirmation of this key point. That word, “Especially,” stands out; then we are told EXACTLY that it is about “the closing work.”

Then, just in case you missed the point, it goes further again, and identifies this period more exactly and specifically, “in the sealing time of the one hundred and forty-four thousand.” No room for error, period.

Now here is Ezekiel 9. Notice the first word, “This,” this word captures the total foregoing  portion of the paragraph and applies it to Ezekiel 9.

Thus, God is showing us the correct interpretation and application of Ezekiel 9, in the following lines. And this is a beautiful thing, because I believe that Ellen was a faithful prophet of God and that she wrote at the dictation of the Holy Spirit, I can now, at this crucial point, have full faith in the material God has preserved for the last 137 years and delivered to my hand, as it is at this day. Praise God!

is forcibly set forth by the prophet’s illustration of the last work under the figure of the men, each having a slaughter weapon in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen, with a writer’s inkhorn by his side. “And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.” p. 22, Para. 1, [23OT].

Once again the time period is fully identified in the words, “the last work.”

God Bless.

Ezekiel 9 – Part 1

Some very interesting connections have come to light.

I have read most of this before, but when you ask of God, he does not give you a stone. I could not “see” these things before. Who knows just how much we miss out on just because of our own sin, cherished in our lives. Give the sin up, it ain’t worth it, we are going home soon.

First up is this passage from the ‘58.

The work of this angel
[ the angel of Revelation 18: aka, the fourth angel ] comes in at the right time, and joins in the last great work of the third angel’s message, as it swells into a loud cry. And the people of GOD are fitted up everywhere to stand in the hour of temptation which they are soon to meet. I saw a great light resting upon them, and they united in the message, and fearlessly proclaimed with great power the third angel’s message. p. 193, Para. 2, [GC58].

We want to focus on “the last great work” portion of the above. I have often wondered what this “last great work” was about.

I was pointed down to the time when the third angel’s message was closing. The power of GOD had rested upon his people. They had accomplished their work, and were prepared for the trying hour before them. They had received the latter rain, or refreshing from the presence of the LORD, and the living testimony had been revived. The last great warning had sounded everywhere, and it had stirred up and enraged the inhabitants of earth, who would not receive the message. p. 197, Para. 1, [GC58].

This looks to me like the “last great work” is in fact “the last great warning.” We do know for the very fact that we are still here that this event is yet future. We may just be at the beginning of the time of this last great work.

There is order in heaven, and God is well pleased with the efforts of his people in trying to move with the system and order in his work. I saw that there should be order in the church of God, and arrangement in regard to carrying forward successfully the last great message of mercy to the  world. p. 230, Para. 1, [2SG].

We have now established that the last great warnings is also the last message of mercy.

All who feel at liberty to censure and find fault with those whom God has chosen to act an important part in this last great work, had better be converted and obtain the mind of Christ. Let them remember those of the children of Israel who were ready to find fault with Moses, whom God had ordained to lead his people to Canaan, and to murmur against even God himself. They should remember that all these murmurers fell in the wilderness. It is so easy to rebel, so easy to give battle before considering matters rationally, calmly, and settling whether there is anything to war against. The children of Israel are our example upon whom the ends of the world are come. p. 42, Para. 1, [12OT].

We must be VERY careful about those we censure during this time.

The word of God will judge every one of us at the last great day. p. 89, Para. 2, [30OT].

It appears to me that this is talking about the last great work of the third angel; for that is the day of judgment.

I then saw the third angel. Said my accompanying angel, “Fearful is his work. Awful is his mission. He is the angel that is to select the wheat from the tares, and seal or bind the wheat for the heavenly garner. These things should engross the whole mind, the whole attention.” p. 38, Para. 3, [SUPCEV].

Now this is interesting, this third angel’s message is THE message that selects and seals the saints.

As judgment passes upon the house of God, the angels keep a faithful record of every man’s work, their sentence is recorded by their name, and the angel is commissioned to spare them not, but to cut them down at the time of slaughter. p. 38, Para. 2, [5OT].

The first phrase above is within the time of probation. The second phrase is not telling us exactly when is “the time of slaughter.”Remember, it is your responsibility to read in context. I provide the link to the book, I just don’t post the whole book.

That’s enough for now.

Sabbath February 27, 2010

Some excerpts from our group reading, of last Sabbath, from Testimonies for the Church No. 16, pages 89 – 91.

I am looking forward to the meeting today. The Bible says, “…to communicate forget not…,” which means fellowship with like believers. That’s what the word “communicate” means, (Strongs number 2842) “fellowship.”

The only true fellowship you can have is with God’s true church, the true believers scattered over the earth. If you are alone, pray that God will help you to find true fellowship. It’s important. In our little group we gain such blessings from reading the Testimonies for the Church as I am sharing with you here. The growth in God’s grace is wonderful to behold.

There is too much talking by nearly all, and too little meditation and prayer.
With many there is too much selfishness. The mind is devoted to self, and not to the good of others. Satan has his power upon you in a great degree. Yet there are precious lights among you, and those who are seeking to walk according to the will of God. p. 90, Para. 1, [16OT].

This world is not the Christian’s heaven, but merely the workshop of God, where we are to be fitted up, to unite with sinless angels, in a holy Heaven. We should be constantly training the mind to noble, unselfish thoughts. This education is necessary to bring into exercise the powers which God has given us in such a manner as shall best glorify his name upon the earth.

The service of God demands the powers of our being, and we fail of meeting the design of God unless we bring to a high state of cultivation the powers of our minds, and educate the mind to love a contemplation of heavenly things, and bring out the energies of the soul, that in exercise it should strengthen, and be ennobled by right actions, operating to the glory of God. p. 90, Para. 2, [16OT].

Meditation and prayer is necessary to a growth in grace. Why there is no more stability, is because of so little mental culture, so little reflection. They leave the mind in a state of inaction, and lean upon others to do the brain work, to plan, and think, and remember for you, and you will grow more and more inefficient. Some need to discipline their minds by exercise. They should force it to think. p. 91, Para. 1, [16OT].

You do not possess that calm trust in God which he requires you to have. You do not train your mind to run in the channel of spirituality.
You have been invited to learn of Christ, who was meek and lowly of heart. Precious lesson! If well learned, it will transform the whole life. Lightness and cheap talk, is all injurious to your spiritual advancement. Perfection of character you should seek after, and let your influence tell for God in your words and acts. You need to earnestly seek the Lord, and to take a deeper draught at the fountain of truth, that its influence may sanctify your life. Your mind is on the world too much. p. 92, Para. 1, [16OT].

Once again I urge you to read in context. It may be that the very words you need have been excerpted just to focus on the point under discussion. I read a lot. Then I go back and read it again. Each post I do is read at least three times before you see it. I know I am skipping over good stuff. Prove all things.

Praise God for the Sabbath!

James and Ellen labored very hard under incredibly difficult circumstances. Here in No. 13, pages 55 – 58, is retained, a recorded, official, response from the Battle Creek church confessing their wrongs against James and Ellen.

It contains some very enlightening statements, from eyewitnesses.

Response from the Battle Creek Church. p. 55, Para. 1, [13OT].

We esteem it a privilege as well as a duty to respond to the foregoing statement of Sr. White. We have been favored with an acquaintance of many years with the labors of these servants of the Lord. We have known something of their sacrifices in the past, and have been witnesses of the blessing of God that has attended their plain, searching, faithful testimony. We have long been convinced that the teaching of the Holy Spirit in these visions were indispensable to the welfare of the people who are preparing for translation into the kingdom of God. In no other way can secret sins be rebuked, and base men who “creep in unawares” into the flock of God, be exposed and baffled in their evil designs. Long experience has taught us that such a gift is of inestimable value to the people of God. p. 55, Para. 2, [13OT].

We believe also that God has called Bro. White to bear a plain testimony in reproving wrongs thus made manifest, and that in this work he should have the support of those who truly fear God. p. 55, Para. 3, [13OT].

We have learned by painful experience, also, that when these testimonies are silent, or their warning lightly regarded, coldness, backsliding, worldly-mindedness and spiritual darkness take possession of the church. We would not give glory to man but we should be recreant to our sense of duty not to speak in strong and pointed language our views of the importance of these testimonies. The fearful apostasy of those who have slighted and despised them has furnished many sad proofs of the dangerous business of doing despite to the Spirit of grace. p. 56, Para. 1, [13OT].

We have been witnesses of the great affliction through which Bro. and Sr. White have passed in the severe and dangerous sickness of Bro. White. The hand of God in his restoration is to us most apparent. Probably no other one upon whom such a blow has fallen, ever recovered. Yet a severe shock of paralysis, seriously affecting the brain, has, by the good hand of God, been removed from his servant, and new strength granted him both in body and mind. p. 56, Para. 2, [13OT].

We think the action of Sr. White in taking her sick husband on her northern tour, in December last, was dictated by the Spirit of God. And that we, in standing opposed to such action, did not move it, the counsel of God. We lacked heavenly wisdom in this matter, and thus erred from the right path. We acknowledge ourselves to have been, at this time, lacking in that deep Christian sympathy that was called for by such great affliction and that we have been too slow to see the hand of God in the recovery of Bro. White. His labors and sufferings in our behalf entitled him to our warmest sympathy and support. p. 56, Para. 3, [13OT].

But we have been blinded by Satan, in respect to our own spiritual condition. p. 57, Para. 1, [13OT].

A spirit of prejudice respecting means came over us
during the past winter that caused us to feel that Bro. W. was asking for means when he did not need it. We now ascertain that at this very time he was really in want; and we were wrong in that we did not inquire into the case as we should. We acknowledge that this feeling was unfounded and cruel, though it was caused by misapprehension of the facts in the case. p. 57, Para. 2, [13OT].

We now accept with deep sorrow of heart the reproof given us in this testimony, and we ask that wherein we have erred from the right, through our lack of spiritual discernment, we may find forgiveness of God and of his people. p. 57, Para. 3, [13OT].

The labors of Br. and Sr. White with us for a few days past have been attended with the signal blessing of God. Not only have deep and heartfelt confessions of backsliding and wrong been made, but solemn vows of repentance and of returning to God have accompanied them. The spirit of God has set its seal to this work in such a manner that we cannot doubt. Many of the young have been brought to Christ, and nearly every person connected with this church has received a share of this heavenly blessing. p. 57, Para. 4, [13OT].

Let our brethren abroad understand that our hearts are in sympathy with Bro. and Sr. White, and we believe them called of God to the responsible work in which they are engaged, and that we pledge ourselves to stand by them in this work.
In behalf of the church. J. N. Andrews, J. N. Loughborough, Joseph Bates, D. T. Bourdeau, A. S. Hutchins, John Byington, Committee. p. 57, Para. 5, [13OT].

At a meeting of the church, Monday evening, Oct. 21, the foregoing report was unanimously adopted. Uriah Smith, G. W. Amadon, Elders. p. 58, Para. 1, [13OT].

What an incredible difference between the attitude then, and the attitude now, concerning their work and testimony.

God Bless your Study

I saw that many were neglecting the preparation so needful, and were looking to the time of the “refreshing” and “latter rain” to fit them to stand in the day of the Lord, and to live in his sight. O, how many I saw in the time of trouble without a shelter! They had neglected the needful preparation, therefore they could not receive the refreshing that all must have to fit them to live in the sight of a holy God. Those who refuse to be hewed by the prophets, and do not purify their souls in obeying the whole truth, and are willing to believe that their condition is far better than it really is, will come up to the time of the falling of the plagues, and then see that they needed to be hewed and squared for the building. But there will be no time then to do it; and no Mediator to plead their cause before the Father.

Behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled. Isaiah 10:33

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 3:10

Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Matthew 7:19

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Luke 3:9

Hewed by the prophets. The voice of reproof. God is calling upon us to repent and confess our sins that they might be blotted out before the close of probation. If we refuse to be hewed by the voice of God’s servant, Ellen, we will be hewed anyway, we will be hewed down, because this message is a selecting message. Could it be represented in Ezekiel 9 as the angel with the writers inkhorn? placing a mark on people, sealing them for the heavenly garner?

Joseph Bates’ notes of Ellen’s vision, “That truth is the seal, that’s why it comes last.” Page 26.

I think it is.

Ellen was a servant of God, a prophet; the Testimonies for the Church, are the hewing voice of God. Will we obey?

Wednesday February 24, 2010

Here are a couple of texts for you today.

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
because thou hast obeyed my voice. Genesis 22:18

And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Genesis 26:4

We have seen these texts before. The word of God has great depth; I PRAISE GOD for the great light of the Spirit of Prophecy to guide my thoughts in the study of the Bible.

You will also remember that the New Jerusalem has only twelve gates, each one for one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Revelation 21:12 declares this to us, and something more. I often like to read the last couple of chapters of the Bible, just for encouragement, and one day I noticed something. I noticed the words in italics.

Here is the text.

And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: Rev. 21:12

When the two added words are taken out of the reading, it reads, that all the names of people belonging to that tribe are “written thereon.” That means that YOUR OWN NAME will be there on that wall, by that gate!

There IS a place for you. There IS a crown for you. There IS a mansion for you. All the very hairs of your head are numbered. GOD KNOWS WHO YOU ARE. “The Father himself loveth you.”

And something more.

There are only twelve gates, no more, no less. Thus the texts we started with at the top. All the saved will enter in through those gates. All the saved will belong to one of the twelve tribes. This is something that took some time for me to understand. But, even Adam will enter that city through one of those gates. Even Adam and all the faithful antediluvians will be a part of the nation of Israel in that day.

This is why this is in the Bible, a description of Christ’s second coming.

Hear the word of the Lord, ye that tremble at his word; your brethren that hated you, that cast you out for my name’s sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, (Revelation 14:15) a voice of the Lord that rendereth recompence to his enemies. (1858 GC, p. 205)  Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child. Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God. Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her: That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be dandled upon her knees. As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the Lord shall be known toward his servants, and his indignation toward his enemies. For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. Isaiah 66:5-15

Here is what the Spirit of Prophecy says of the event.

Christ made no reference here to the resurrection of the body from the grave, when a nation shall be born in a day, but he was speaking in regard to the inward work of grace upon the unregenerate heart. p. 129, Para. 1, [2SP].

Tuesday February 23, 2010

Come now, let us reason together.

Here are some excerpts from John 14:1-16:33

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

In the 1858 Great Controversy, pages 163, 165, 169, 170 & 171, all have some reference to “the way.” I my condition of being buried in darkness, I could not understand these quotes. What did they refer to? Finally I was led to understanding in the above text, Jesus is the way, follow him.

the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

It’s no small wonder that they re-defined “inspiration” to just “thought inspiration,” they had to distance themselves from the truth.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me;

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

There is a huge amount of truth we are passing over because we want to focus here on just one point. Instead of the Bible, think about the Spirit of Prophecy as you go back and re-read the above.

If the Spirit of Prophecy is the word of God through his servant, Ellen, then how important is that word?

Which of the texts above would you NOT apply to the Spirit of Prophecy?

Monday February 22, 2010

In our little group we are reading in the last part of Testimony for the Church, No. 16. Something I have noticed with our group and in myself, is a growing desire to be right with God. With the turning of each page we are finding new thoughts about the mysteries of godliness to be lived out in our lives.

This particular section I had read before, this time through it came so much more alive. The readings of our group has slowed down considerably as we take the time necessary to digest the words of life. I want to be ready to go when he shows up to take his people home. I have a lot of fears about my own self. I fear that like Peter I do not know myself. Hence the great need to embrace the counsel of the true Witness to the Laodiceans.

This passage had some real messages for Art. In the knowledge that you are seeking the same, or you would not be here, I offer to share a part of my path with you.

Epistle Number Seven. p. 86, Para. 1, [16OT].
Dear Brethren and Sisters in —–: I was shown, June 12, that the love of the world was to a great extent taking the place of love to God. You are situated in a pleasant country, favorable to worldly prosperity.

Shades of Obadiah 1:3-4

This places you where you are exposed to continual temptations of having your interest swallowed up in the world, and you engaged in laying up treasure upon the earth. Your hearts will be where your treasure is. You are situated where there are temptations to be plunging deeper and deeper into the world, and continuing to accumulate,

I am a collector and a saver. But if Christ is coming very soon I will not need all this stuff, I need to keep the things that are for immediate use. I knew a man who lived on an acre and a half. After he died the new owners hauled away, over 80, very large dump boxes, as in 40 cubic yard boxes. The stuff was piled high and deep. Now that is extreme.

and while thus engaged the mind has become engrossed in the cares of this life to such an extent as to shut out true godliness. But few realize the deceitfulness of riches. Those who are anxious to acquire means are so bent upon this one object as to make the religion of Christ a secondary matter. Spiritual things are not valued, and are not sought after; for the love of gain has eclipsed the heavenly treasure, and the prize of eternal life, if judged by the effort, zeal, perseverance and earnestness exhibited by these who profess to be Christians, is not half as valuable as earthly possessions. Compare the earnest effort after the things of this earth with the languid, weak, inefficient, sickly effort for spirituality and a heavenly treasure.

I have things that I have a great interest in. Do a search on “flint knapping” and you just might be amazed. There is a resurgence of interest in the making of stone arrowheads and spear points. The skill level and production of points is astounding. What I would call perfect arrowheads. Just last night I spent some time on the net looking at the same. And then I realized how much time had gone by…. I want my time with God to be like that. I want to be one of his people. I want to know him so that I don’t meet a stranger when he comes. I have spent time with others before where the time just flew by. How about you? Do you remember a time like that?

Somehow, someway, we have to get worldliness out of our system. Moses spent six days below the cloud getting rid of “his common thoughts and feelings.” Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 1, page 242.

No wonder that we experience so little of the illuminating influence from the heavenly sanctuary.

I wonder what this is. I have nothing to compare it to. I’ll have to study this one out. God is always pointing to higher and higher places to live. Praise his name!

Our desires are not in that direction, but mostly confined to earthly pursuits, seeking for worldly things, and neglecting the eternal, immortal. Prosperity is blinding the eyes, and deceiving the soul. God may speak, but the rubbish of earth prevents his voice from being heard. p. 86, Para. 2, [16OT].

God Bless your study.

Sunday February 21, 2010

In light of yesterdays post, we should comment just a bit about Daniel 12.

First, it would be good to remember that the Bible was written without punctuation or sentence structure. We know there are some common corrections to be made in this vein. Perhaps the most famous is Christ’s answer to the thief on the cross.

Daniel 12: 2 speaks about what appears to be a single resurrection. But what if it actually is speaking about two resurrections? If this were the case, then there would be no cause to claim that those who “pierced him” would actually die three times.

The first time would be the natural death, the second would occur after Christ’s second coming and the third would be in the lake of hell fire. They would experience one birth and two resurrections.

Matthew 26:64 tells us that this special group, who “pierced him,” will see Christ “sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” I always assumed this text referred to his second coming. But does it have to?

Here is something I base my faith upon. 1860 Spiritual Gifts, Vol. 2, pages 98-99 and 115.

The light of Heaven rested upon me. I was soon lost to earthly things. My accompanying angel presented before me some of the errors of those present, and also the truth in contrast with their errors. That these discordant views, which they claimed to be according to the Bible, were only according to their opinion of the Bible, and that their errors must be yielded, and they unite upon the third angel’s message. Our meeting ended victoriously. Truth gained the victory. p. 98, Para. 1, [2SG].

From Volney we went to Port Gibson. The meeting there was held in Bro. Edson’s barn. There were those present who loved the truth, and those who were listening to and cherishing error, and were opposed to the truth. But the Lord wrought for us in power before the close of that meeting. I was again shown in vision the importance of brethren in Western New York laying their differences aside, and uniting upon Bible truth. p.99

My husband immediately commenced to write. When he came to some difficult passage we would call upon the Lord to give us the true meaning. p. 115, Para. 1, [2SG].

I encourage you to read in context, prove all things. The above gives witness to the effect that the Spirit of Prophecy, or the visions, are to guide us to a correct understanding of the Bible. Absent any authenticated material to the contrary, I will believe what God has revealed, in the 1858 Great Controversy and the 1851 Christian Experience and Views, posted yesterday, to be the true interpretation of Daniel 12:2 and Matthew 26:64.

Here are a couple more passages to help with the truth about the Spirit of Prophecy and it’s true position.

The Lord deigns to warn you, to reprove, to counsel, through the testimonies given, and to impress your minds with the importance of the truth of his word. The written testimonies are not to give new light; but to impress with vividness upon the heart the truths of inspiration already revealed. Man’s duty to God and to his fellow-man has been distinctly specified in God’s word; yet but few of you are obedient to the light given. Additional truth is not brought out; but God has through the testimonies simplified the great truths already given, and in his own chosen way brought them before the people, to awaken and impress the mind with them, that all may be left without excuse. p. 44, Para. 1, [20OT].

Moses would never have been prepared for his position of trust, had he waited for God to do the work for him. Light from Heaven will come to those who feel the need of it, and who seek for it as for hidden treasures. But if we sink down into a state of inactivity, willing to be controlled by Satan’s power, God will not send his inspiration to us. Unless we exert to the utmost the powers which he has given us, we shall ever remain weak and inefficient. Much prayer, and the most vigorous exercise of the mind, are necessary if we would be prepared to do the work which God would intrust to us. Many never attain to the position which they might occupy, because they wait for God to do for them that which he has given them power to do for themselves. All who are fitted for usefulness in this life must be trained by the severest mental and moral discipline, and then God will assist them by combining divine power with human effort. p. 127, Para. 1, [30OT].

I look forward to seeing you in Heaven!

Sabbath February 20, 2010

From time to time we will visit this particular subject, that of the 1884 Great Controversy.

First, it is dated three years after James White’s death, thus W. C. White was fully in control, having been at the helm for the now past three years.

Second, rumor has it that the manuscript for Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 4, was completed before James’ death. That could certainly be true, as there were three to four years within the time frame of after Vol. 3 was published.

Third, there are just too many problems that can not be reconciled equitably.

So here is our passage this time, and you may go here to see the 1884 and the 1911 compared, (this link downloads only the one chapter). They are quite similar.

Graves are opened, and “many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth” “awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” All who have died in faith under the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept his law. “They also which pierced Him,” those that mocked and derided Christ’s dying agonies, and the most violent opposers of his truth and his people, are raised to behold him in his glory, and to see the honor placed upon the loyal and obedient. p. 454, Para. 1, [4SP].

Focusing only on the portion in bold blue above, we are informed that those who crucified Christ are resurrected at Christ’s second coming. And I believed this also for some time, as it reads nearly the same in the 1911GC.

Well, let’s do some checking. Let’s get out our 1858 Great Controversy and see what that book says.
Here is the relevant passage, starting in the middle of the paragraph.

All behold the SON of man; and those very men who despised and mocked JESUS, and smote him with the reed, and that put the crown of thorns upon his sacred brow behold him in all his kingly majesty. Those who spit upon him in the hour of his trial, now turn from his piercing gaze, and from the glory of his countenance. Those who drove the nails through his hands and his feet, now look upon the marks of his crucifixion. Those who thrust the spear into his side, behold the marks of their cruelty on his body. And they know that he is the very ONE whom they crucified, and derided in his expiring agony. And then there arises one long protracted wail of agony, as they flee to hide from the presence of the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. p. 214, Para. 1, [GC58].

Now this sounds Ok, until you read it in context. The very title of this chapter is, “The Second Resurrection,” and we are reading the first paragraph.

So we find from this source that the 1858 Great Controversy is telling us the opposite of what the 1884 and 1911GC say.

But wait, it gets better. I just did a search on the phrase “pierced him” within my collection of authenticated Spirit of Prophecy material, and I got one hit.
Here it is.

After the saints are changed to immortality, and are caught up together, with Jesus, receive their harps, crowns, &c., and enter the City, Jesus and the saints sit in judgment. The books are opened, the book of life and the book of death; the book of life contains the good deeds of the saints, and the book of death contains the evil deeds of the wicked. These books were compared with the Statute book, the Bible, and according to that they were judged. The saints in unison with Jesus pass their judgment upon the wicked dead. Behold ye! said the angel, the saints sit in judgment, in unison with Jesus pass their judgment upon the wicked dead. Behold ye! said the angel, the saints sit in judgment, in unison with Jesus, and mete out to each of the wicked, according to the deeds done in the body, and it is set off against their names, what they must receive at the execution of the judgment. This, I saw, was the work of the saints with Jesus, in the Holy City before it descends to the earth, through the 1000 years. Then at the close of the 1000 years, Jesus, and the angels, and all the saints with him, leaves the Holy City, and while he is descending to the earth with them, the wicked dead are raised, and THEN the very men that “pierced him,” being raised, will see him afar off in all his glory, the angels and saints with him, and will wail because of him. They will see the prints of the nails in his hands, and in his feet, and where they thrust the spear into his side. The prints of the nails and the spear will then be his glory. It is at the close of the 1000 years that Jesus stands upon the Mount of Olives, and the Mount parts asunder, and it becomes a mighty plain, and those who flee at that time are the wicked, that have just been raised. Then the Holy City comes down and settles on the plain. p. 16, Para. 3, [1851 Christian Experience and Views].

Notice the word in bold red above, “THEN” in all caps. That is the way it is in the book, originally.

I do NOT use the 1884 Great Controversy any more. I did at first; but, after getting deeper into the research and making so many discoveries that could not be ignored, I had to leave it behind.

I cleave to the 1858 Great Controversy. Now you get to choose.

Happy Sabbath Studies.
